Canon EF-s 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III (only comes as a kit with the $299 Canon Rebel T100, 58mm filters, 6.8 oz./193 g, 0.8'/9.6"/0.25m close focus). bigger. I got this lens with my Rebel T100. This 100% all-content, junk-free website's biggest source of support is when you use those or any of these links to my personally approved sources I've used myself for way over 100 combined years when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live — but I receive nothing for my efforts if you take the chance of getting it elsewhere. Canon does not seal its boxes in any way, so never buy at retail or any other source not on my personally approved list since you'll have no way of knowing if you're missing accessories, getting a defective, damaged, returned, dropped, incomplete, gray-market, store demo or used camera — and my personally approved sources allow for 100% cash-back returns for at least 30 days if you don't love your new camera. I've used many of these sources since the 1970s because I can try it in my own hands and return it if I don't love it, and because they ship from secure remote warehouses where no one gets to touch your new camera before you do. Buy only from the approved sources I've used myself for decades for the best prices, service, return policies and selection.

Introduction topSample Images Introduction Specifications
This is a basic kit lens that I've only seen sold as a kit with the Canon T100. I've never seen it sold by itself. It's a swell little lens with super-close macro ability, but it has no stabilization as does the EF-s 18-55mm IS STM.

Performance topSample Images Introduction Specifications
Overall Autofocus Manual Focus Ergonomics Lateral Color Fringes Macro Overall performance topThis 18-55mm lens is sharp, but sadly lacks image stabilization for use in low-light handheld.
Auto Focus performance topAutofocus is reasonably fast. The autofocus motor is a regular motor which can make a bit of a whir as it moves.
Manual Focus performance topThere is no automatic manual override; you have to slide a switch. Thank goodness there's an AF/MF switch; slide that and just turn the front of the lens.
Focus Distance Recording performance topThe focused distance is recorded in the EXIF data. I read this in the lower left of my screen in Photoshop's lens correction filter.
Distortion performance topDistortion, uncorrected in the T100, is the usual strong barrel distortion at 18mm and 24mm, and none at 35mm and 55mm. For more critical scientific use, use these corrections in Photoshop's lens correction filter to JPG images. These aren't facts or specifications, they are the results of my research that requires hours of photography and calculations on the resulting data.

The front section rotates and extends as focussed more closely. The rubberized zoom ring is the usual mechanical control.
Lateral Color Fringes performance topExcept for light falloff (vignetting or peripheral illumination), there are no lens corrections in the Canon T100 with which this lens ships, so you may see some cyan/red at 18mm and 30mm, and there's none at 55mm. Recommendations topSample Images Introduction New Good Bad Missing Format Compatibility Specifications Accessories Unboxing USA Version Performance Compared User's Guide Recommendations More I wouldn't buy this lens by itself, but as a freebie along with the Canon Rebel T100 it makes a very basic little pair. Ideally I'd look for the stabilized EF-s 18-55mm IS STM instead. I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of the cap (exactly like an iPhone) so I'm always ready to shoot instantly. I only use a cap when I throw this in a bag with other gear without padding — which is never. The UV filter never gets in the way, and never gets lost, either. The very best protective filter is the Hoya multicoated HD3 58mm UV which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints, but it's way too expensive for this lens. I'd suggest the Hoya multicoated 58mm UV, and for very basic use in filthy environments the uncoated Tiffen 58mm UV works almost as well and is much easier to clean. Filters last a lifetime, so you may as well get the best. The Hoya HD3 stays cleaner than the others since it repels oil and dirt. All these filters are just as sharp and take the same pictures, the difference is how much abuse they'll take and stay clean and stay in one piece. Since filters last a lifetime or more, there's no reason not to buy the best as it will last you for the next 40 years. Filters aren't throwaways like digital cameras which we replace every few years, like it or not. I'm still using filters I bought back in the 1970s!
