© 2005 KenRockwell.com get the R1C1 package here and R1 package here INTRODUCTION Nikon announced the SB-R200 macro flash and the SU-800 controller on November 1st, 2005. They also announced the R1C1 and R1 packages which add mounting hardware and accessories. See my pages for the specifics of the SB-R200 and SU-800. The $430 R1 deletes the SU-800 from the $680 R1C1 package. The SU-800 isn't needed with the D200, D70 and D70s whose built-in flashes serve as the commander. The R1C1 includes an SU-800 controller for use with the F6, D2X, D2H and D2Hs which lack a built-in flash, or with the D50 whose built-in lacks the smarts to control remote flashes. The R1C1 Package The R1C1 package includes: SU-800 Wireless Speedlight Commander and SS-SU800 Soft Case. (2) SB-R200 Wireless Remote Speedlights. Each SB-R200 includes : AS-20 Speedlight stand SX-1 Lens Attachment Ring. The SX-1 attaches SB-R200s to a lens. It holds up to four SB-R200 on camera, or eight off-camera. SG-3IR IR Panel for Built-in Flash. This prevents pre-flash light from the D200, D70 and D70s' built-in flashes from influencing exposures in extreme close-ups. Adapter Rings: 52, 62, 67, 72 and 77 mm. (2) SW-11 Extreme Close-Up Positioning Adapters, which can angle the SB-R200 toward the optical axis for extreme close-ups. SW-12 Translucent Diffuser Panel: Provides the ability to bounce and/or soften light SW-C1 Flexible Arm Clip to mount SW-12 Diffuser to the SX-1 Attachment Ring. It also allows mounting to other objects. SS-MS1 System Case holds the complete System with space for a third SB-R200 flash. The R1 Package The R1 package is the same as the R1C1, minus the SU-800 and its SS-SU800 Soft Case. RECOMMENDATIONS These are for people photographing insects, frogs and chasing around small animals with a macro rig. It's a huge mechanical improvement over using a Lepp bracket and other small wired flashes. I have not tried it: the i-TTL system's many preflashes may scare and otherwise alter your subject making live photography difficult for some subjects. For instance, my dog and some people are assured to have their eyes closed in every photo due to the i-TTL system's preflashes. |
