The beyerdynamic DT 240 Pro are closed around-the-ear headphones. These are basic throw-around headphones for general use. While beyerdynamic markets them as pro monitoring headphones, which usually means a presence peak to exaggerate what's wrong with a recording while you're still making it, these headphones actually have a smoother response better suited to enjoying, rather than recording, music.

They are mostly made of plastic in China; they aren't the usual quality we expect from beyerdynamic — but they're a fraction of the price of beyerdynamic's genuinely professional MADE IN GERMANY DT 1350 and other beyerdynamic monitoring headphones.

These are basic, durable headphones that are more comfortable than other monitor headphones, with warmer sound.

Good

Warm, enjoyable sound.

Warm, full bass.

Sensitive; no amplifier needed. Just plug into your iPhone or iPad and you're done.

Single detachable cord connects to either earpiece.

¼″ screw-on adapter included.

The threaded part of the plug that mates with the adapter is narrow enough to let these connect well with iPhones and iPads in thick cases.

Bad

Made in China — not what we expect from the world's best German headphone maker.

Missing

No remote control.

No microphone.

No Bluetooth and no batteries — these are just headphones.

No case included, just a thin nylon bag.

Overall

Performance          top

These are basic headphones better suited to enjoying music than monitoring it because they have a nice warm sound, rather than the more glaring sound with the emphasized presence range other inexpensive pro monitoring headphones like the Sony MDR-7506, Sony MDR-V6, Senal SMH-1000 or Audio Technica ATH-M50.

As inexpensive headphones, none of these sound as good as more serious monitor headphones like the superior beyerdynamic DT 1350.

Sound

Performance          top

These are much warmer and smoother sounding than other inexpensive pro monitoring headphones like the Sony MDR-7506, Sony MDR-V6, Senal SMH-1000 or Audio Technica ATH-M50. This is because the others err on the side of having too much upper midrange presence to help us hear noise, buzzing, distortion and interference in our recordings while we can still do something about it.

These DT-240 Pro instead err on the side of a too recessed upper midrange, which means nice warm sound better suited to enjoying music rather than pulling it apart.

These sound big and warm, with no midrange emphasis.

They err on the side of exclusion rather than being peaky.

They sound great for watching movies.

Bass

Bass is typical. It's about the same as the other basic monitoring headphones, which means it's moderately boosted and sounds fine. No problems here, bass is solid and warm.

Ergonomics

Performance          top.

These ride around my ears, so they don't touch my ears and are therefore more comfortable than the other monitor headphones that sit on my ears.

These headphones have the same sort of gimbals and flexibility as the Audio Technica ATH-M50. They magically adjust to any head.

The left/right markings are mostly invisible, and there are no Braille dots. Put some gaffer's tape on one side.

The cord goes in either side.

The earpieces fold back 90º so these can lay flat. The earpieces can't fold up into the headband.

There's no case; I put these in a gallon-sized freezer Ziploc and go.

The DT 240 Pro stay on your head if you move around because of the pressure against your ears, but try not to move around too much because the plug is big and could get bent of you banged it into anything or yanked the cord sideways.

Sensitivity

Performance          top

These are 34 Ω headphones with plenty of sensitivity similar to the other headphones. They plug directly into portable devices.

I don't even need to turn my iPad halfway up for movies, 1/3 to 1/2 is plenty.

They are less sensitive than the Grado headphones.

They are about as sensitive as the DT 1350.

They are certainly more sensitive than 300Ω or 600Ω pro headphones.

Isolation

Performance          top

beyerdynamic DT 240 Pro Pro

beyerdynamic DT 240 Pro earcup. bigger.

They isolate outside sound as well as the Sony MDR-V6 and Audio Technica ATH-M50.

The DT 1350 isolate a little better at higher frequencies.

Leakage

Performance          top

These leak a bit more sound to people next to you than most other closed headphones, but much less than open headphones.

The DT 1350 leak much less.

Mechanical Quality

Performance          top

These are all plastic, with a metal band inside a harp that's padded both top and bottom.

Compared   Usage   Recommendations

I've covered most everything in detail above.

These sound much warmer than other similar headphones, making them great for enjoying music, but less well suited to trying to listen for defects.

These only fold flat. The yokes don't let the earpieces fold up into the rest of the headphones so these aren't quite as portable as the others.

Usage

Top   Intro   Specifications   Performance

Compared   Usage   Recommendations

These are so sensitive that there is no need for special amplifiers. Just plug them into anything and you're good. The headphone amplifiers built into iOS devices (or Apple's Lightning Audio Adapter) are better than most other more expensive dedicated headphone amplifiers, so plug into your Apple device and you're good.

For live monitoring where you want to hear everything wrong with your audio, the Sony MDR-7506, Sony MDR-V6, Senal SMH-1000 and Audio Technica ATH-M50 are better. These headphones are better for kicking back and enjoying music, and are more comfortable. The beyerdynamic DT 1350 cost more, but offer far superior sound and slightly better isolation than any of these. If you're serious about monitoring, get the DT 1350.

Good headphones last forever. My first pair of beyerdynamic DT990 that I bought over 30 years ago still look, work and sound great. Therefore if you're buying these to enjoy music, I'd suggest springing for either of the far superior beyerdynamic DT 1350 for use at home or in studio, or the beyerdynamic T51i for use with iOS devices. Yes, they cost twice as much, but after a few years you'll have forgotten the price while you're still enjoying their superior quality every day.

Detachable cords make it easy to replace a bad one, but makes these less attractive for use in schools.

Get these if you don't want to spend more than $100 and prefer a warmer, more distant sound; otherwise I'd suggest spending more if you want the really great sound one usually gets from everything else from beyerdynamic.

I'd get mine at Amazon or at eBay (see How to Win at eBay).

Enjoy!

Ken.

Help Me Help You

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble (see How to Win at eBay), but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

If you find this page as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.
