Thursday, 12 November 2009 Today the group rose before the dawn and took a tour of Monument Valley. Tom and his two sons Carl and Carlos were our Navajo guides. Yucca, Pre-Dawn, Monument Valley, Navajo Nation, 6:51 AM. Snapped with a 2009 Canon S90, I chose f/5.6 and A mode chose 1/3 second in forced ISO 80, 6mm (28mm equivalent), manual WB with more amber, -2/3 exposure compensation.
Dawn, Monument Valley, Navajo Nation, 6:59 AM. I pulled this out of a CR2 raw file. The S90 auto-corrects lens distortion at the wide end, so opening the file in CS4 isn't smart enough to correct. I used the Lens Distortion Tool to pull it out. I suspect Canon's free software that came with the camera may do this automatically. I chose f/5.6 and A mode chose 1/20 second in forced ISO 80, 6mm (28mm equivalent), manual WB with more amber, plus 2/3 stop compensation.
Monument Valley, Navajo Nation, 7:31 AM. Snapped with a 2009 Canon S90, Program Auto chose f/4.9 at 1/125, forced ISO 80, 22.5mm (105mm equivalent), manual WB at about 16,000 K and a lot of magenta, no exposure compensation. Shot in raw and therefore I had to bump the contrast in Photoshop CS4.
Anustasi, Monument Valley, Navajo Nation, 8:23 AM. Snapped with a hand-held 2009 Canon S90, Program Auto chose f/4 at 1/30, forced ISO 80, 6mm (28mm equivalent), cloudy WB with some amber added.
The View Hotel, Monument Valley Tribal Park, Navajo Nation, 9:03 AM. Snapped with a hand-held 2009 Canon S90, Program chose f/4 at 1/200, 6mm (28mm equivalent), AWB with some + Amber.
View from The View Hotel, Monument Valley Tribal Park, Navajo Nation, 9:14 AM. I held a Tiffen HT 55mm color-grad ND 0.6 grad filter in front of the S90 to darken the sky and lighten the deck. Snapped with a hand-held 2009 Canon S90, Program Auto chose f/4 at 1/125, 6mm (28mm equivalent), AWB with added amber, -2/3 exposure compensation.
San Juan Inn, Mexican Hat, Utah, 11:41 AM. This was the best weather we found over Monument Valley the couple of times we happened by. Snapped with a hand-held 2009 Canon S90, Program Auto chose f/4 at 1/160, 7.5mm (35mm equivalent), AWB with added amber, no exposure compensation.

Cactus, San Juan Inn, Mexican Hat, Utah, 11:58 AM. Snapped with a hand-held 2009 Canon S90, I chose f/5 in A mode which chose 1/80 at ISO 80, zoom at 6mm (28mm equivalent), AWB with no added amber, no exposure compensation.
Truck Bed, Twin Rocks, Utah, 1:59 PM. Snapped with a hand-held 2009 Canon S90, Program Auto chose f/4 at 1/400, 6mm (28mm equivalent), AWB with added amber, -2/3 exposure compensation.

Near Fisher Towers, Near Moab, Utah, 4:53 PM. Snapped with a hand-held 2009 Canon G11, Program Auto chose f/3.5 at 1/60, 6.8mm (32mm equivalent), built-in flash, very warm white balance to spice up gray sky. Image exactly as it came from the G11.
