We expected the light not to be good in the morning, so the crew slept in. The light turned out to be fantastic at dawn, and soon covered-up with high clouds.

Daylight as seen through red plastic. It was just red; when digital cameras overexpose, red turns to orange and yellow as seen here. Film would have stayed red.

Snapped with a 2009 Canon S90, Auto ISO chose ISO 800, Program Auto chose f/4 at 1/80, 15mm (70mm equivalent), A3 AWB, no exposure compensation.

After leaving Lone Pine, we headed north. We stopped in Bishop for lunch.

I shot this knowing that I had missed the best sky by a few minutes, but even if the night sky is a bit too dark, it still is cold and blue here. The key is that the sky has to balance with the dim artificial light, and there is only a few-minute window each dawn and dusk where it is optimum.

Snapped with a hand-held 2009 Canon S90, Auto ISO chose ISO 800, Program Auto chose f/2 at 1/20, 6mm (28mm equivalent), A3 AWB, no exposure compensation.

It snowed a few more inches tonight.
