Route 66
03, 04 & 05 February 2012

04 February 2012, Saturday      skip to Sunday       back to first day

Oh my golly, the motel had a pancake-making robot!!!

Quick Cakes Machine

Pancake Robot,8:05 AM. (2012 Canon S100 at 7mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2.8 at 1/30 at AUTO ISO 400.)

After breakfast we saddled-up and rode east to Daggett.

Daggett

Daggett, California, 9:24 AM. (2012 Canon S100 at 9.5mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4 at 1/1,000 at AUTO ISO 80.)

And what else do they have in Daggett?

1971 Plymouth Duster

1971 Plymouth Duster, 9:52 AM. (2012 Canon S100 at 8.1mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4 at 1/125 at AUTO ISO 80.)

Not only was this free-range Duster seen, a second was also seen parked outside someone else's house. Daggett much have the highest per-capita concentration of Dusters on the planet.

Airstream Motel

Airstream Motel, 10:27 AM. (f/11 at 1/125, 10 feet, Kodak T-Max 100, 1950s 39mm LEITZ 1 yellow filter, 1964 90mm f/2.8 LEICA ELMARIT, 1963 LEICA M3, 1960s CdS LEICAMETER MR-4, NCPS scan, split-toned.)

Henning Motel, Newberry Springs

Inside Another Motel , 10:41 AM. (2012 Canon S100 at 13.4mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4 at 1/50 at AUTO ISO 100.)

Whiting Brothers, Newberry Springs

Bennett Pump, Whiting Brothers, Newberry Springs, 11:28 AM. (2012 Canon S100 at 26mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/5.9 at 1/800 at AUTO ISO 80.)

Whiting Brothers, Newberry Springs

Whiting Brothers, Newberry Springs, 11:33 AM. (f/4 at 1/30, 8 feet, Kodak T-Max 100, 1950s 39mm LEITZ Or orange filter, 1965 35mm f/2 LEICA SUMMICRON, 1963 LEICA M3, 1960s CdS LEICAMETER MR-4, NCPS scan, split-toned.)

Mecredes CLK500 convertible

Heading east from Newberry Springs on Route 66, 12:08 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 5.2mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4 at 1/320 at AUTO ISO 80.)

I got to ride in the back, yay! Now I know why my friend Diana Bellucci (née Coffin) called my convertible the "wind machine" back in the 1980s; it's windy back there!

neglect, pisgah

Neglect, Pisgah, 12:38 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 5.2mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2.8 at 1/1,250 at AUTO ISO 80.)

Jeeze, no one maintains these ruins. Back in 2007, this was a building into which we could walk to photograph.

gear teeth, pisgah

Gear Teeth, Pisgah, 12:49 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 13.6mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4.5 at 1/400 at AUTO ISO 80, split-toned.)

Plymouth Duster, Hemi-Orange, Ludlow, CA

Hemi-Orange Duster, Ludlow, 3:01 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 9.1mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4 at 1/250 at AUTO ISO 80.)

This is the third Duster seen in less than six hours. These folks must really love Dusters, but if they do, why is this one, especially in Hemi Orange, ignored?

Orange Ford

Orange Ford, 4:02 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 5.2mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4 at 1/400 at AUTO ISO 80.)

I held my S100 down by my shins and looked down at its LCD to get this view.

Orange Chevrolet

Orange Chevrolet, 4:13 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 12.4mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4 at 1/500 at AUTO ISO 80.)

Ingersoll Rand

Ingersoll-Rand, 4:26 PM. (2008 Canon SD880 at 5mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/5.6 at 1/250 at AUTO ISO 80.)

This shot is with my 2008 Canon SD880, whose images are just about as good as those from the S100, but the SD880 still has superior ergonomics. Too bad Canon went back to its old ways after advancing the rear button layout with the SD880.

Now we head to downtown Amboy for Roy's.

Roy's Route 66, Amboy CA

Roy's, 5:05 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 26mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/5.9 at 1/125 at AUTO ISO 160.)

Roy's Route 66, Amboy CA

Roy's Cones, 5:28 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 7.5mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2.8 at 1/30 at AUTO ISO 800.)

Roy's Route 66, Amboy CA

Roy's Cafe, 5:35 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 5.2mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2 at 1/30 at AUTO ISO 640.)

It was a bear trying to compose this one. There is only one point in three-dimensional space at which these elements juxtapose like this, and it was difficult to try too hold the camera there freehand and press the shutter.

Roy's Route 66, Amboy CA

Roy's After Hours, 5:36 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 7.3mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2.8 at 1/30 at AUTO ISO 80.)

Roy's Route 66, Amboy CA

Roy's under Moonlight, 5:43 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 5.2mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2 at 1/3 of a second at ISO 400, hand-held.)

With the S100's image stabilization, I set a lower manual ISO of 400 (AUTO ISO was trying to set ISO 1,600) and held steady for perfectly-sharp results at one-third of a second, no need to break out a tripod as the light was changing.

Mercedes at Roy's Route 66, Amboy CA

Waiting, 5:51 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 5.2mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2 at 1/6 of a second at AUTO ISO 1,600, hand-held.)

In spite of mens' clever efforts to save time by ditching tripods, we still have to wait for the ladies. In this shot, all the other cars' head and tail lights lit the Mercedes, while the Mercedes lit the ground under the doors and the darkening sky still had enough blue light to contrast with everything else.

People often ask "how'd I do this?," and the answer simply is to be aware and shooting as day turns to night. It's the only time of day when sky light balances with artificial light to get these contrasts.

Peggy Sue's, Yermo,

Peggy Sue's, Yermo, 7:13 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 5.2mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2 at 1/30 of a second at AUTO ISO 400.)

Peggy Sue's, Yermo,

Peggy Sue's, Yermo, 7:21 PM. (2012 Canon S100 at 5.2mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/2 at 1/20 of a second at AUTO ISO 1,250.)

That's all for today.

05 February 2012, Sunday      back to Saturday       back to first day

We headed over to the truck dump before breakfast.

JustGL

Just GL, 7:58 AM. (2012 Canon S100 at 16.4mm, Pro (P) mode chose f/4.5 at 1/400 of a second at AUTO ISO 80.)

I'm not sure why it's freshly written in grease pencil on the side of a junked truck, but when I think of GL, I think of GL, the top choice for Coronado, California real estate.

After breakfast we headed west on Route 66 and visited the Bottle House Ranch, and then we headed home.

That's It! return to top.
