This Sony FE 70-200/2.8 GM OSS II is the best 70-200mm lens available for any Sony camera. You can't buy better at any price: it's ultrasharp, focuses ultra-close, it's well-made, has a dedicated aperture ring, has three programmable focus-lock buttons on the front of the barrel, focuses super-fast on Sony's cameras, and most importantly it weighs less than any other 70-200/2.8 - even less than Canon's ultralight RF 70-200/2.8 L IS. it's so much lighter than other 70-200/2.8s that it's easy to shoot with one hand: Easy to shoot with one hand on A7 IV! bigger. I'd get my 70-200/2.8 II at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H or at Crutchfield, or eventually get it used at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay.
New since the old FE 70-200/2.8 GM OSS intro topMuch lighter than anything; just 36.8 oz./1,042g without tripod foot. Adds a dedicated aperture ring, with defeatable clicks. Electronic manual focus. Much closer focussing. Tighter macro ratio. 11-blade diaphragm capable of great sunstars. Serial number now LASER-engraved on bottom of barrel near mount, rather than just a sticker.
Good intro topUltrasharp; shoot wide open at f/2.8 at any focal length and it's ultrasharp all the way out to the corners. It doesn't get any sharper than this. Full-time instant manual focus override. Dedicated aperture ring, with a lock and defeatable clicks! Three Programmable focus lock buttons AF/MF switch. Stabilizer switches. Focus limiter. Case & hood included.
Bad intro topProduction dumped to Thailand, not made domestically in Japan. Plastic filter threads and plastic exterior.
Missing intro topNo focus or depth-of-field scales. No infra-red focus indices.

This works on all Sony E-mount cameras, full-frame and crop-sensor. This includes all the NEX, A9, A7, A6xxx and A5xxx series cameras. It will not work on any Minolta MAXXUM 35mm SLR or any Sony A-mount DSLR. Those use the old A mount which was actually the Minolta MAXXUM mount from 1987.

Overall Autofocus Manual Focus Breathing Bokeh Ergonomics Falloff Macro Mechanics Sharpness Spherochromatism
I'd get my 70-200/2.8 II at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H or at Crutchfield, or eventually get it used at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay.
Overall performance topThis Sony 70-200 2.8 GM OSS II is the best 70-200 available for Sony. It's sharp, focuses fast and super close, has three focus lock buttons, has great stabilization and a magnificent 11-blade diaphragm.
Autofocus performance topAutofocus is fast, but not instantaneous. It's good. Autofocus is completely silent unless you hold it to your ear. You can shoot with a silent camera in restricted, sensitive and prohibited areas without being noticed. There are three focus lock buttons around the front. Hold any to lock focus.
Manual Focus performance topManual focus is perfect! It's completely electronic, and Sony finally has it perfected.
Focus Breathing performance topFocus breathing is the image changing size as focused in and out. It's important to cinematographers because it looks funny if the image changes size as focus gets pulled back and forth between actors. If the lens does this, the image "breathes" by growing and contracting slightly as the dialog goes back and forth. Breathing is minor in the Sony 70-200/2.8 II. The image gets slightly larger as focussed more closely.
Bokeh performance topBokeh, the feel or quality of out-of-focus areas as opposed to how far out of focus they are, is excellent. Backgrounds just melt away. Here are samples at headshot distance:

Ergonomics performance top
This Sony 70-200/2.8 GM OSS II handles the same as other 70-200/2.8 lenses, and is a cosmetic copy of the Canon. It's the same colors and has the same switches in the same places as Canon has used for years, which is good. Zooming is internal and the zoom ring is easily adjusted with a single fingertip. It might take two fingers if pointed up or down. There is no zoom creep and zooming is perfectly spaced; it's easy to set precise framing anywhere in the range. The tripod collar has no 90º clicks.
Falloff performance topFalloff is invisible with the camera's default "Shading Correction" ON. See samples at Sharpness.
Macro performance topMacro gets very close and stays reasonably sharp wide-open. It's not that sharp wide-open at f/2.8 at macro distances, but so what; stopped down it's fine. It focuses closer at 70mm and gives a slightly higher reproduction ratio.

Sharpness performance topIt's super-sharp, especially wide open at any zoom setting. The only limitations to sharpness are your skill as a photographer. Here are shots from on top of a mountain looking at the valley many miles away. It's super-sharp, corner to corner: The Desert, 25 February 2022. Sony's MTF charts are fairy-tale calculations from Sony's marketing department ignoring diffraction and flare, and certainly do not represent actual measured performance: MTF at 70mm at 10 cyc/mm and 30 cyc/mm, radial (solid) and tangential (dotted).
MTF at 200mm at 10 cyc/mm and 30 cyc/mm, radial (solid) and tangential (dotted).
Spherochromatism performance topSpherochromatism, also called "color bokeh" by laymen, can cause colored fringes on out-of-focus highlights, usually seen as green fringes on backgrounds and magenta fringes on foregrounds with fast, long lenses shot wide open. It is an advanced form of chromatic aberration in a different dimension than lateral color. Spherochromatism is most commonly seen in fast lenses of moderate focal length when shooting contrasty items at full aperture. It goes away as stopped down. This Sony has moderate amout of yellow-green/purple spherochromatism. This is good for portraits since it helps smooth foliage in backgrounds, but bad for cinematography since it can lead to weird fringes on out-of-focus bright areas and points of light. Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 spherochromatism. Sony A7 IV, Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II at close-focus distance at 200mm at f/2.8 at 1/2,500 at Auto ISO 100, +1.3 stops exposure compensation. bigger or camera-original © file.

Sunstars performance topThis 70-200 can make great sunstars on brilliant points of light. With an 11-blade diaphragm it will make 22-point sunstars: Latino Classic, 11:35 AM, Saturday, 26 February 2022. I'd get my 70-200/2.8 II at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H or at Crutchfield, or eventually get it used at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay. This is the best 70-200 zoom ever made for full-frame Sony cameras. It's also the lightest 70-200/2.8 lens ever made, for any camera. I LOVE how light it is, and with its stellar optical perfornce, it's awesome. I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of a cap so I'm always ready to shoot instantly. I only use a cap when I throw this in a bag with other gear without padding — which is never. The UV filter never gets in the way, and never gets lost, either. The best protective filter is the 77mm Hoya multicoated HD3 UV which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints. For less money, the B+W 77mm 010 is an excellent filter, as is the multicoated version and the basic multicoated Hoya filters or the 77mm Nikon Clear (NC - UV), but the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and the best. Filters last a lifetime, so you may as well get the best. The Hoya HD3 stays cleaner than the others since it repels oil and dirt, and will outlast this lens. All these filters are just as sharp and take the same pictures, the difference is how much abuse they'll take and stay clean and stay in one piece. Since filters last a lifetime or more, there's no reason not to buy the best as it will last you for the next 40 years. Filters aren't throwaways like digital cameras which we replace every few years, like it or not. I'm still using filters I bought back in the 1970s!
Where I'd get mineI'd get my 70-200/2.8 II at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H or at Crutchfield, or eventually get it used at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay.
