Today we celebrated Mother's Day.

Katie and Babas, Maui. 7:04 AM.

Katie and Babas, Maui. 7:04 AM.

Canon 5D Mark II, Auto ISO 400 (flash), Canon 50mm f/1.8, Professional exposure (P) mode chose f/7.1 at 1/100, Canon 220EX flash on-camera with 1/4 CTO gel.

I used -2/3 exposure compensation, as the previous shots were too light due to the meter being fooled by all the darkness on either side, and it's still too light. This is cropped from horizontal.

Canon 5D Mark II, Auto ISO 400, Canon 100mm f/2, Professional exposure (P) mode chose f/2 at 1/80, no flash.

Hot darn, this Canon stuff looks great when used properly. This is at my usual defaults, shot by window light, with the astounding 100mm f/2 shot wide-open, hand-held.

Canon 5D Mark II, Auto ISO 200, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Professional exposure (P) mode chose 1/50 at f/2.8, no flash.

Katie was facing away from the light, so I dodged (lightened) her face as I printed this.

Canon 5D Mark II, Auto ISO 200, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Professional exposure (P) mode chose 1/40 at f/2.5, no flash.

Poopy diapers are easy to change, except when you've got another wiggly one climbing up your back as you try to do the precision work!

For some reason the colors were too bold, so I dropped the saturation a bit, and dodged (lightened) my face in Photoshop.

Canon 5D Mark II, Auto ISO 400 (flash), Canon 50mm f/1.8, Professional exposure (P) mode chose f/6.3 at 1/200, Canon 220EX flash on-camera with 1/4 CTO gel.

Wow, again given decent light and fill-flash, the colors look awesome. The fill-flash lightens Katie just enough to separate her from the concrete, which was actually lighter than she was.

Parking Lot Sunset, Kihei, Maui. 8:39 PM.

Parking Lot Sunset, Kihei, Maui. 6:39 PM.

Canon 5D Mark II, ISO 50, Canon 100mm f/2, Professional exposure (P) mode chose f/7.1 at 1/500, no flash.

As usual at ISO 50 with colorful things in bright light, I shot this at -2/3 exposure compensation. The green Sun in the upper left is a ghost caused by the uncoated filter I was using. If I was a good photographer, I would have pulled it off first.

Steel Palm, Kihei, Maui. 6:41 PM.

Canon 5D Mark II, ISO 50, Canon 100mm f/2, Professional exposure (P) mode chose f/2.8 at 1/100, no flash.

When the light's great, anything looks good. These are trees in the parking lot of a shopping mall.

I burnt-in the sky at the top; move your mouse over the image to see it as shot. I wanted to keep your eyes in the frame, and not have the light sky pull them out. This is cropped from a horizontal shot.

I set my exposure compensation back to zero for this shot.

Out Steak, Kihei, Maui. 6:43 PM.

Canon 5D Mark II, ISO 50, Canon 100mm f/2, Professional exposure (P) mode chose f/2.8 at 1/100, no flash.

I used -2/3 exposure compensation, and I should have used -1; it's a bit too light here which desaturates the sky.

Canon 5D Mark II, ISO 3,200, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Professional exposure (P) mode chose 1/60 at f/3.5, no flash.

The restaurant had dim tungsten lighting, so I set white balance to 3,200K and set more orange (A9) WB SHIFT. The image is too amber; I should have laid off the WB SHIFT and left it at my default of A5.

Canon 5D Mark II, ISO 3,200, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Professional exposure (P) mode chose 1/80 at f/4, no flash.

Expression is everything! Yay!
