These are just snapshots and there are many more throughout the review; my real work is in my Gallery.

These are shot hand-held as NORMAL JPGs; no tripods, FINE JPGs or RAW CR3 files were used or needed. While I don't show anything here from RAW, I do have a 45MP sample CR3 file you may download and examine (you have to download it and open it in your choice of software on your computer; it won't do anything here in your browser.)

I buy only from these approved sources. I can't vouch for ads below.

The Canon 90D is superb for all sorts of photography from nature, landscape, portraits, corporate events, weddings, sports, wildlife and anything else imaginable. It is a very well thought out camera in which everything works and handles very, very well with no rough edges; Canon has been developing the EOS system for well over 30 years and it shows.

The 90D has more linear resolution (pixels per millimeter) than any other interchangeable-lens camera, DSLR or mirrorless, full-frame or APS-C. A full-frame camera would need 83MP to match the 90D's linear resolution!

The 90D is probably the best birding camera ever, with 10 FPS and the highest resolution ever, letting you crop what you need.

This Canon 90D replaces the older Canon 80D, adding higher resolution (32 MP versus 24 MP) and a much higher frame rate (10 FPS versus 7 FPS).

As we expect from Canon, the 90D is superb. The colors and tones are unbeaten (just look at the luscious colors in my arbitrary snapshots above), and autofocus and general operation is way faster than any of Canon's mirrorless cameras.

I got my 90D at B&H; I'd also get mine at Adorama, at Amazon, at Crutchfield or used at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay.

(23.976 rates were absent in firmware 1.0.0 and that's how many cameras are potentially shipped today. Be sure to update the firmware at least to version 1.1.1 if you want 23.976 FPS video, however v1.1.1 removes the 720 at 29.97/25.00/23.976 options.)

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com (For video experts only): It shoots at the standard pulled-down 23.976, 29.97, 59.94 and 119.88 FPS rates, and calls them so. There are no non-standard "straight" 24.00, 30.00, 60.00 or 120.00 FPS video options so amateurs can't select them by accident. It has the usual 25.00, 50.00 and 100.00 FPS options.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No NFC; just Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No GPS; use the Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2.

All Canon EF Full-Frame and EF-s APS-C lenses made since 1987 work flawlessly on the 90D.

Some lenses are better than others; see Recommended Lenses for the best choices.

No mirrorless RF lenses or EOS-M lenses work. There are no adapters; RF and EOS-M lenses get closer to the sensor than is possible with the longer distance between the sensor and lens mount in EF-mount cameras, although you can easily use EF Full-Frame and EF-s APS-C lenses on mirrorless cameras with an EF-RF adapter — but that's not on this 90D.

Canon 90D

Canon 90D U.S.A. Warranty Card. bigger.

Your box must include a U.S.A. warranty card like the one shown above from Canon U.S.A., Inc. It should be on top inside your box as you open it. The serial number on the card must match the serial number on the sticker on the bottom of your 90D:

Canon 90D

Canon 90D Serial Number Sticker. bigger.

If you don't have a printed USA warranty card or the number doesn't match, you got ripped off with a gray market version from another country. This is why I never buy anyplace other than from my personally approved sources. You just can't take the chance of buying elsewhere, especially at any retail store, because non-U.S.A. versions have no warranty in the USA, and you probably won't be able to get firmware or service for it — even if you're willing to pay out-of-pocket for it when you need it!

Shifty dealers may include copies of a card from a different legitimate U.S.A. camera, hoping you won't check serial numbers and catch their fraud. A card with the wrong serial number means nothing other than that you have no warranty coverage.

Canon even puts the same serial number on the bag inside the box:

Canon 90D

Canon 90D Shipping Bag. bigger.

This bag looks like it's sealed with stickers, but it's easy to open and reclose without damaging anything; thus it's not actually sealed.

The serial numbers on the outside of the box (near the bar codes) or the bag don't have to match for you to have warranty coverage, but they should. If they don't, it means a shifty dealer took things out of boxes and was too sloppy to put them back correctly — and it means you got a used camera and are entitled to a huge discount if anyone other than you took it out of the box.

If a gray market version saves you $500 the risk might be worth it, but for $200 or less I wouldn't risk having no warranty or support.

Always be sure to check yours while you can still return it, or just don't buy from unapproved sources or at retail so you'll be able to have your camera serviced and get free updated firmware as needed. Get yours from the same places I do and you won't have a problem.

Overall       performance       top

The Canon 90D is a great little camera that does everything well. Canon has been a major innovator in DSLRs since the beginning, and the 90D builds on all this experience.

Far better than mirrorless, the 90D is a real DSLR on which everything handles and operates super-fast, with none of the waiting responding to settings or foolish menus and mystery buttons typical to other brands and mirrorless cameras.

The 90D handles and produces pictures very much like the world's standard professional camera, the Canon 1DX Mk III. If you know one, the other is very familiar. Canon has worked on the EOS system for well over 30 years and has it down.

Autofocus       performance       top

Autofocus is fast and sure, a hallmark of DSLRs. AF is super-fast, and super-smart in working with multiple AF areas at once to track moving subjects all over the frame.

I usually leave my AF Areas set to "Auto selection AF," and my 90D just finds the subject and focuses on it wherever it may be in the frame. Everything should work this well!

There is no real low-light AF illuminator. Instead, the 90D fires very obnoxious bursts of the flash if it needs to see in the dark to focus. Thankfully I turn this off and have no problem focussing in dim light, without any low-light AF assist.

Manual Focus       performance       top

performance          top

Manual focus is simple: either look at the clear part of the finder until things are clear as you turn the focus ring, or here's a hint: pick one AF area, then look for the green FOCUS OK dot (next to the "29" below) to light on the lower right to let you know when you're in focus:

Canon 90D Finder

Actual View Through Canon 90D Finder. bigger.

Auto ISO       performance       top

Auto ISO is state-of-the-art.

We can assign the highest and lowest ISOs, and set the slowest shutter speed in full stops from 1 second to 1/8,000, or let it track the lens' focal length.

If you set to AUTO track the lens focal length, you can set it to track ±3 stops faster or slower than 1/focal length.

Good job!

Auto White Balance       performance       top

Auto White Balance works great, no worries here. Auto WB always looks good.

Color & Tonal Rendition       performance       top

Color rendition is how pictures look in the real world. Real-world color rendition has nothing to do with color accuracy measured in a lab. Color rendition is dependant on how a maker programs all the color matrices, curves, and look-up tables to generate color from the data read from the sensor, and varies widely between makers once you set a camera away from its defaults. I never shoot at defaults.

I love how my pictures look from my Canon cameras and my 90D. I prefer to set my Picture Style to STANDARD and then push Saturation to +4 to get JPGs with the wild colors I prefer for nature and landscape shooting. People look great simply left at the defaults of the Standard Picture Style; and you may prefer the softer Portrait settings. Of course your preferences will differ, and the 90D has the same Picture Styles as every other Canon camera. If you have a setup you like on another Canon camera, they all track from one model to the next.

If you shoot raw then your colors and tones aren't created until you process the raw data later in software, and your choice of software will have as much effect on your images as the camera itself.

I'm a working artist, not some online tweaker, YouTuber or tech blogger. Color is critical to my work. I'm pickier about color than almost anyone; I see things most people don't. I can get photos that get oohs and ahhs with my Sonys or Fujis, but I don't get to WOW! as often with those as I do with my Nikons and Canons.

It's like pianos: anyone can talk forever about how pianos are made, but to most ordinary players the subtle variations between different samples of a Steinway Model D are eclipsed by their own limitations in playing, but when you're a virtuoso even subtle differences become obvious to the seasoned master. That's why when you buy, or choose a Steinway for your tour as a Steinway Artist, you go to Steinway's Astoria factory and pick from among several samples of the same model which suits your style best. To a master, the subtle details are everything, just like subtle differences in color rendition between different brands of camera. Art is not the duplication of reality; art is the expression of imagination.

That's just me; your preferences and results will vary.

Ergonomics       performance       top

Ahhh, I love my Canons. Buttons and menus are laid out intelligently and well marked.

The 90D has an excellent SD card door and power switch. They work great, and never get knocked by accident.

The MENU button is on the wrong side, requiring a second hand to operate. No worries, I program my rear SET button to be a MENU button at MENU > C.Fn III > SET > MENU. Now I can hit SET to get to my Menus while shooting with one hand.

That's great, but what's missing is the ability to assign the rear SET button to be a ZOOM button as I program my higher-end Canon cameras. That's OK, because If I could set that, I couldn't assign the SET button to be MENU.

This may seem silly to consumers, but when you shoot all day, every day as I do, every button click costs time which costs me money, so I program everything to get me to what I need with as few clicks a possible.

Again, we all have different preferences and Canon does all this better than anyone.

Exposure       performance       top

Exposures are good.

Typical for my Canons, with my color saturations set to +4, it's common that I need to set -2/3 exposure compensation in contrasty light to keep from blowing-out very saturated highlights.

Finder       performance       top

My picture of the finder doesn't do it justice:

Canon 90D Finder

Actual View Through Canon 90D Finder. bigger.

The actual finder image is super sharp, bright and contrasty, much better than any mirrorless camera and much better than the real-life photo above makes it appear.

The reason some people like mirrorless is because their finders can show menus and playback and even zoom in for focus checking as you shoot, while of course this live optical image is always the actual image as seen directly through the lens with no electronic processing.

There are many choices of warnings and displays that overlay as gray LCD icons over the clear image.

The adjustable diopter stays in focus; it's not where it get knocked and it's easy to adjust when you want to.

An innovation is a little camera-tilt icon that can be enabled in the lower left. It lets us level our camera, but doesn't cover up half the finder as it does in other cameras.

Bravo!

Flash       performance       top

The little pop-up flash does wonders for fill-flash. I love this feature and wish all my cameras had it.

You'll see "buSY" shown on the bottom of the finder display while the built-in flash recycles, during which time you can't take another picture.

Frame Rates       performance       top

It's rated for 10 FPS, and shoots at 10 FPS with full autofocus and auto exposure tracking.

My 90D just shoots, and shoots fast, something that puts it head and shoulders above mirrorless cameras, which rarely can track focus and track exposure even if they can run at 10 FPS.

The 90D has 10 real FPS you can use for things that move, while mirrorless cameras usually only run at this speeds for subjects that aren't moving — so why then would you need fast frame rates?

Bravo, Canon. It used to be that only the top professional cameras could run at real double-digit frame rates, and today the 90D is probably the first affordable camera that can.

But wait — the 90D has more resolution (32MP) than any pro camera like the 1DX Mk III (20 MP) or Nikon D6 (21 MP).

Therefore 90D can shoot more pixels per second than any other still camera: 322 MP/s (32.3 MP × 10 FPS). The next fastest camera is Canon's 1DX Mk III (20 MP × 16 FPS = 320 MP/s). Even Nikon's top D6 only shoots at 21 MP × 14 FPS = 294 MP/s), so depending on what sport or action you're shooting, you may get more information by using a 90D rather than one of those much larger cameras.

High ISO Performance      performance       top

High ISOs are great, as we expect in 2020. The image, even when set to high saturation as I do (Picture Style Standard with Saturation set to +4), looks the same at all ISOs when seen at reasonable sizes as I show here.

For normal size images, any ISO you need works fine, and the only visible degradations are just a little more noise and a little more blotchiness at the very highest 25,600 and 51,200 (H) settings.

This is quality we couldn't have imagined years ago. Bravo!

600 × 450 Pixel Crops from Above   performance   top

What we see at the crazy-high magnifications below is that fine details go away as the ISO increases. This happens with all cameras and is an artifact of the noise reduction working harder as the ISO increases. It's perfectly normal and expected; if it didn't get softer, it would get way noisier as the ISO increased.

ISO 100 has the most detail and sharpness, and it becomes softer at every higher ISO. This is normal and how noise reduction works in every camera.

By ISO 800 most of the detailed scrollwork between the clock numbers is gone.

By ISO 12,800 the minute marks are mostly gone.

By ISO 25,600 all the detail is gone from the clock face, leaving only the numbers.

At ISO 51,200 (H) even the numbers and hands are starting to disappear.

If these 600 × 450 pixel crops are about 3" (8cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same high magnification would be about 23 × 35" (2 × 3 feet or 59 × 88 cm).

If these 600 × 450 pixel crops are about 6" (15cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same extreme magnification would be about 46 × 70" (3.8 × 5.8 feet or 1.18 × 1.8 meters).

If these 600 × 450 pixel crops are about 12" (30cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same insane magnification would be about 93 × 140" (7.7 × 11.6 feet or 2.3 × 3.5 meters).

Lens Corrections       performance       top

The 90D can correct automatically for:

Falloff, at MENU > CAMERA 1 > Lens aberration correction > Peripheral illum corr,

Distortion, at MENU > CAMERA 1 > Lens aberration correction > Distortion correction

and a host of other lens aberrations like chromatic aberration and diffraction which are grouped into a single

Digital Lens Optimizer setting at MENU > CAMERA 1 > Digital Lens Optimizer.

You can turn each of these ON or OFF at those menu options. The Digital Lens Optimizer only goes ON or OFF as one; there is no ability to turn any of the individual corrections within the Digital Lens Optimizer ON or OFF separately.

Mechanical Quality       performance       top

This is a typical upper-midrange consumer Canon camera. It's quality-made at Canon's own plant in Japan, not offshored to some third-party sweatshop in the third-world or a Communist country as too many other major brands have fallen to today. The 90D is made with pride and without shortcuts.

Top LCD       performance       top

I consider top LCDs a throwback to 35mm film days, and prefer cameras with knobs there instead of these these vestiges of days gone by, but no DSLR does this.

The top LCD is a bit small, and coupled with being loaded with data means the digits and icons are small and hard to read for old-timers.

It has an amber LED backlight if you press the ☀ button near the shutter release.

Rear LCD Monitor       performance       top

The rear LCD is small (3"/76mm diagonal) because it has to fit in a flippy frame. I'd rather a larger LCD that doesn't flip like the 3.2"/81mm one in my Canon 5DS/R, but that's just me. I'm not a video or Live View kind of guy.

It lacks an automatic brightness control (like what's in my 5DS/R), so it's dim when outdoors in daylight and too bright outdoors at night unless you adjust it manually at MENU > WRENCH 2 > Disp. brightness.

Data       performance       top

Cards are correctly titled as "EOS_DIGITAL."

Files are tagged as 72 DPI.

Still image files are prefixed with IMG, while movie files are prefixed MVI. I prefer that they all start with the same prefix so they sort in my computer by time shot, rather than by file type.

The 90D doesn't let us select our own file name prefixes.

Power & Battery       performance       top

Far better than any mirrorless camera, the 90D is rated for over 1,800 shots per charge (1,300 if you use the flash a lot), and I never ran the battery down to see how many frames I get on a charge.

I doubt that you'll need a spare battery for a very full day's shooting; the biggest potential for problems is that it runs so long you might forget to charge it before you leave for a trip, and/or forget to bring your charger!

The battery arrives dead, so expect to charge it for a few hours before you go out and enjoy your new 90D.

NEW: Canon 90D vs LEICA vs iPhone vs Fuji Shootout.

Versus the Canon 80D

This Canon 90D replaces the older Canon 80D, adding higher resolution (32 MP versus 24 MP) and a much higher frame rate (10 FPS versus 7 FPS), along with many other minor advances listed at What's New.

Versus the Canon 7D Mk II

The Canon 7D Mk II remains as an older, but more professionally oriented camera with two card slots, a PC flash sync terminal, more advanced menu options and more AF areas, but with the same frame rate and lower resolution (20 MP vs. 32 MP) than the 90D.

The 7D Mk II is 29% heavier than the 90D.

The 7D Mk II has a larger top LCD. It has the same-size rear LCD, but the 7D Mk II's rear LCD doesn't swivel.

Something I miss on the 90D that the 7D Mk II can do is assign the SET button to be a ZOOM PLAYBACK button, so it both starts playback and zooms-in with one click. Of course using this setting means you can't set that button to be a second MENU button.

To get 3D tracking of moving targets all over the frame, select both AI SERVO (use the [ Q ] button and it's in the lower-left of the quick control screen) and All-Area AF, which is next to the Focus Mode in the same Quick Control Screen.

To select among AF Area modes (single, group, all , etc.) while looking through the finder, press the top right rear [ + ] button and then tap the [ T ] button near the shutter release. I prefer to use the front dial rather than tapping the [ T ] button, so I select MENU > C.Fn II 9 > Main Dial.

Exposure Compensation

As all EOS cameras have done since 1987, just turn the rear dial. It's not marked; you're supposed to know this when you shoot Canon.

Sensor Cleaner

While it may be "ultrasonic," it's unusual that you can hear it clicking as it works. This is normal; it's it shaking the crud off itself.

Flash       user's guide       top

I never use flash indoors; if I do, I be sure to gel (filter) the flash orange (CTO) to match tungsten or green to match fluorescent lighting.

Camera Level

To see the level on the rear LCD, press the rear INFO button until it appears.

To see a clever little level icon in the lower left of the finder image, activate it at MENU > WRENCH 4 > Viewfinder display > Electronic level > Show.

Movies       user's guide       top

Set the rear START STOP lever to the movie position first. You also have to move the lever there to see the video options in the menu system.

Once you've set these, just press START STOP to start and stop video.

For 25.00, 50.00 and 100.00 FPS frame rates, first set MENU > WRENCH 3 > Video System > For PAL, then you'll see them at MENU > CAMERA 1 > Movie rec quality.

For 120.00 and 100.00 FPS rates, select MENU > CAMERA 1 > Movie rec quality > High Frame Rate > Enable. For all the other rates, be sure High Frame Rate is set to Disable.

Your choice of either AAC (compressed audio data) or LPCM (uncompressed audio data) coding, set at MENU > C.Fn III > 5: Audio compression

Focus Stacking

Focus Bracketing (stacking) makes a series of images which, if combined later in your computer, can lead to limitless depth of field, just as in the Canon EOS RP.

This only works in Live View, so the secret is you first have to be in Live View before you can find the menu option!

Canon 90D

Canon 90D. bigger.

So, first enter Live View by pressing the rear START/STOP button (near the eyepiece) with the lever set to the upper gray still photo icon as shown.

Now go to MENU > CAMERA 5 > Focus bracketing > Focus bracketing (yes, you go here twice) > enable, and follow the rest of the instructions as I've already documented in my EOS RP User's Guide.

The 90D is a magnificent camera, and it's a much better choice than anything mirrorless for sports and action. The 90D does everything well.

The 80D is also nice, and if you don't need 10 FPS for action or the higher resolution or anything else new about the 90D, then if the 80D saves you money, by all means get one. It's also an outstanding camera.

The 7D Mk II is for heavier-duty use. It's bigger and tougher and more expensive and adds niceties like a second card slot, but it has less resolution than the 90D and the same frame rate. I doubt the 65-point AF system of the 7D Mk II is better then the newer 45-point system of the 90D; I haven't directly compared them but I'd venture that the 90D's AF system, being newer and possessing a far more powerful CPU than the old 7D Mk II, that the 90D's AF system is at least as good, if not better, than the 7D Mk II's. For image quality and sports and action, I'd probably grab a 90D rather than a 7D Mk II, and for nature and landscape, I'd certainly prefer the higher resolution of the 90D — so long as I felt safe with only one card slot.

The best lens is Canon's newest EF-s 18-135mm nano-USM IS. It does pretty much everything you might need.

If you need a wider lens, be sure you know How to Use Ultrawide Lenses, and get the EF-s 10-18mm.

If you want a longer telephoto, get the EF Canon 70-300mm IS II, or my favorite, the fully professional EF 100-400mm L IS II.

This 100% all-content website's biggest source of support is when you use those or any of these links to approved sources when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. Canon does not seal its boxes in any way, so never buy at retail or any other source not on my personally approved list since you'll have no way of knowing if you're missing accessories, getting a defective, damaged, returned, non-USA, store demo or used camera. I use the stores I do because they ship from secure remote warehouses where no one gets to touch your new camera before you do. Buy only from the approved sources I use myself for the best prices, service, return policies and selection.

Thanks for helping me help you!

Ken, Mrs. Rockwell, Ryan and Katie.

Help Me Help You

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. These places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

If you find this page as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.
