Fuji X-T200

Fujifilm X-T200 (13.0 oz./368g with battery and SD card, $599) and XC 35mm f/2. bigger. I got mine at B&H. I'd also get it at Adorama or at Amazon, where it comes in three colors: silver, dark silver as shown here and champagne gold. The X-T200 comes as a body-only or comes as a kit with the excellent 15-45mm PZ for $699 at Adorama, at Amazon and at B&H, all also in three colors.

Fujifilm X-T200 Sample Image file

Palms, 7:04 PM, 23 May 2020. Fuji X-T200, Saturation (color) set to +2, Sharpening set to +2, Fuji XC 35mm f/2 at f/5 at 1/250 at ISO 200, -0.7 stops exposure comensation (LV 12.0), exaclty as shot. bigger or camera-original © 7MB JPG file.

With JPG saturation and sharpening adjustments that only go to ±2, I get softer colors than from other Fuji cameras that go to ±4 when I crank them to their maxima. This is not a camera for nature or landscape JPG shooters.

I buy only from these approved sources. I can't vouch for ads below.

This is the latest X-Series APS-C camera from Fuji. It's inexpensive and has both an LCD and electronic finder.

I dislike the X-T200 because, while it's positioned as a basic camera at a low price for "beginners," it embodies all the vexing complexity that runs rampant in Fuji's cameras that makes it horribly frustrating to set-up and get going, but lacks the excellent marked single-purpose dials that make shooting easy once set.

If you want an X-T200 as a backup to the rest of your Fuji X system, know that it's a pain to operate even if you're fluent in Fuji, as I am. Lots of functions and knobs are in different places than Fuji's other cameras, so you can't just grab the X-T200 and run with it if you need to. You have to stop and learn it.

Therefore, especially for someone who doesn't shoot every day, it is highly unlikely that the sort of person who'd buy this camera will every figure it out, will become frustrated, and just get a Nikon Z50 or spend a little more for the much better Fuji X-T30 after a year of having no idea how to use this thing each time they pick it up.

That's right; don't buy this camera. It's too frustrating for a basic shooter. If you want a basic camera, get the Sony A6100 for the same price (get it as a kit with the 16-50mm PZ) or pay a little more for the superior Fuji X-T30 or Nikon Z50. If you want a fantastic camera at a low price, get a superb DSLR like the Nikon D3500 for even less money — and it's a better camera for most people.

The X-T200 is capable of the same technical results as all the other Fuji cameras, and actually has really good high ISO performance; my problem is that the X-T200 is even more of a pain to use because it lacks marked dials and buttons, so if you don't shoot it every day, there's no way you or I can remember what does what.

Sadly my X-T200 is the only camera I've every used so sloppily assembled that the finder image isn't level! No kidding; open both eyes and look at the horizon and compare the finder to reality; my sample is misaligned such that the finder image is a little bit rotated.

I got my X-T200 at B&H.

Good

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Same overall technical image quality as Fuji's better cameras.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Excellent High ISO performance.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com 4:3, Square and 16:9 as-shot crops.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Top right dial is exposure compensation by default (good), but it's unmarked and free spinning.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Claimed internal electronic gyro stabilization for movies ("Digital Gimbal Function"), just like iPhone has done for many years. Most Fuji cameras have zero stabilization for movies, a big flaw the X-T200 may have fixed.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com 1/4,000 mechanical shutter and 1/32,000 silent electronic shutter.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Settable file name prefixes; I set my files as "ROCK0123.JPG" rather than IMG_0123.JPG.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Includes a headphone adapter, most likely using the USB-C port.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Has face and eye detection autofocus, but only if you go out of your way to turn it on at MENU > AF/MF > FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING FACE DETECTION ON > EYE AUTO.

Bad

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com My sample has a misadjusted finder whose image is a little bit rotated.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Same horrible and complex menu system as other Fuji cameras; not at all simplified from Fuji's more complex cameras.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Oddly limited JPG image adjustment options; saturation adjustment only goes to ±2 and sharpening adjustment also only goes to ±2.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Lots of dials and buttons (good), but most of them aren't marked, so good luck being able to use this camera each time unless you're shooting it every day.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Operation seems slower than other cameras. Either it's my imagination, Fuji trying to improve battery life with slower clock speeds, or using less expensive processors.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com 15 minutes longest video length at 4K (30 minutes al lower resolutions).

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Default image size set to 16:9 crop to fill the 16:9 crop LCD. Be sure to set it back to normal 3:2 (in which case playback no longer fills the short screen)!

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Too plasticy, most other Fuji cameras are made mostly of metal.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Not that much less expensive than the superior Fuji X-T30 or Nikon Z50, and same price as the superior Sony A6100.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Offshored to Indonesia; not made domestically in Japan.

Missing

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com Oddly limited JPG image adjustment options; saturation adjustment only goes to ±2 and sharpening adjustment also only goes to ±2.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No automatic brightness control for rear LCD.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No second card slot.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No ability to save and recall camera settings to and from a card.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No timed manual exposure times longer than 30 seconds. You have to use Bulb, a remote release and an external timer instead.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No illuminated buttons.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No standard threaded cable release socket, common in better Fuji cameras.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No focus mode lever; instead you have to press MENU > AF/MF > FOCUS MODE to select AF-S, AF-C or Manual focus. Better Fuji cameras all have this.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No marked "Q" button to get to the Quick Menu screen; better Fuji cameras all have this. Instead, maybe they'll be a "Q" spot on the touch screen, or maybe not depending on how you have the camera set; hardly quick.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No battery percentage display; only a crude battery bar icon.

I got my X-T200 at B&H.

Ergonomics

As I covered at the top, this is one of the most difficult cameras to operate due to it sloppy menus and numerous unmarked mystery controls. As a camera ostensible pitched as a basic camera, there is no way normal people (like my mom) will ever be able to figure this out.

The bottom battery ad card door has no spring-loading on the latch; you have to remember to slide the lock home otherwise it won't stay closed.

The buttons are too flush, so you can't find them by feel.

Fuji X-T200

Fujifilm X-T200. bigger.

The tripod socket is off-center, making it hard to find by feel in the dark (which is where I use tripods).

The card and battery door is so close to the tripod socket that you can't open the door to change the battery or get to the card while on a tripod.

There is no ON/OFF switch. Instead, there is a single combined ON/OFF push button. This is bad because when you put the camera to your eye and it's off; there's no way to know if it's OFF or sleeping. If it's sleeping and you press ON/OFF to turn it ON, what actually happens is it wakes from sleep, and then turns itself OFF, after which you have to press ON/OFF again to wake it. Yes, this is annoying!

High ISO Performance & Sample Image Files       performance       top

As seen at normal image sizes as I show below, the X-T200 pretty much makes the same images from ISO 200 to ISO 51,200 (H), which is excellent.

The X-T200 has better-than-average high ISO performance; just look at the High ISO section of my other reviews. Even ISO 51,200 doesn't look too bad and certainly better than most APS-C cameras.

The pulled ISO ISO 100 (L) has a little more highlight contrast, which you can see in the lighter wall on the right, as well as the missing detail in the blown-out reflection on the clock face. The worst thing is the bands of magenta-green shift on the light wall to the right — but ISO 100 (L) is also the sharpest ISO if you can keep your lighting ratios under control.

600 × 450 Pixel Crops from Above

What we see at the crazy-high magnifications below is that fine details go away as the ISO increases. This happens with all cameras and is an artifact of the noise reduction working harder as the ISO increases.

The look much cleaner than most cameras; detail in the clock face is solid up to very high ISOs, and even at ISO 51,200 (H) the clock face is much clearer than at ISO 51,200 on most other APS-C cameras.

These 600 × 450 pixel crops vary in size to fit your browser window.

If these are about 3" (7.5cm) wide on your screen, the complete images would print at 20 × 30" (50 × 75 cm) at this same high magnification.

If these are about 6" (15cm) wide on your screen, the complete images would print at 40 × 60" (1 × 1.5 meters) at this same extreme magnification.

If these are about 12" (30cm) wide on your screen, the complete images would print at 80 × 120" (2 × 3 meters) at this same insanely high magnification.

Fuji does not seal its boxes, so never buy at retail or any other source not on my personally approved list since you'll have no way of knowing if you're missing accessories, getting a defective, damaged, returned, non-USA, store demo or used camera. I use the stores I do because they ship from secure remote warehouses where no one gets to touch your new camera before you do. Buy only from the approved sources I use myself for the best prices, service, return policies and selection.
