The LEICA M9-P is exactly the same as the 2009 LEICA M9, except that LEICA added the sapphire LCD cover from the M8 that it removed from the M9 to give it this upgrade path today. 1.) Colors: proper silver-chrome or a less shiny black. (original M9 is silver-gray paint or shiny black). 2.) Fake leather is now proper vulcanite. 3.) No big red dot or M9 on the front to have to cover with tape as I do. Instead, engraved script on top. 4.) The LCD is covered with a sapphire crystal. 5.) It weighs more: 600g (approx: 21.16 oz), including battery, compared to 585g (20.64 oz) for the M9. 6.) $7,995. 7.) Announced 21 June 2011. Sadly, although "unobtrusive" is pitched, I don't see that anything has been done to quiet the obnoxiously-loud (by LEICA standards) shutter-charge motor of the original M9. The Fuji X100 is so much quieter! In fact, LEICA has simply made the M9-P as we all wanted the M9 to be in the first place, removing some of the pimping and making it more like LEICA's best camera ever, the eternal LEICA M3.
From LEICA: Solms, Germany (June 21, 2011) - Leica Camera AG is proud to present a new version of the world’s smallest, full-frame digital system camera: the Leica M9-P. This new model will sit alongside the Leica M9 in the company’s rangefinder portfolio. Providing an alternative, even more discreet and resilient design that further reinforces the classic nature of the M9, the M9-P specifically meets the needs of professional photographers. The new model is now available in a classic silver chrome or subtle black paint finish.
