Lame shot of Bodie, California.

This is a technically swell, but it has no magic. It sucks. Canon 5D, 16-35mm f/2.8 L II with Tiffen 812 warming filter at 29mm, f/11 @ 1/320 (Av mode), ISO 100, -0.7 exposure compensation, hand-held (tech details). Exactly as shot in JPG. Next Photo >>

Slightly less lame shot of Bodie, California.

Slightly less lame shot of Bodie, California.

In this shot I got closer with a wider lens. This starts to bring on the funk and emphasize the crazy lines. It's less lame, but no one's dancing, either.

Canon 5D, 16-35mm f/2.8 L II with Tiffen 812 warming filter at 16mm, f/22 @ 1/100 (Av mode), -0.7 exposure compensation, ISO 100, hand-held (tech details). I was hoping f/22 would give a sunstar, but no. Exactly as shot in JPG. Next Photo >>

Better shot of Bodie, California.

This is the correct way to use a wide lens: get closer and jam the viewer's face into the glass.

Canon 5D, 16-35mm f/2.8 L II with Tiffen 812 warming filter at 16mm, f/11 @ 1/125 (Av mode), -0.7 exposure compensation, ISO 100, hand-held (tech details). Exactly as shot in JPG. Next Photo >>

Canon 5D, 70-200mm f/4 L IS at 97mm, f/11 @ 1/400 (Av mode), -0.7 exposure compensation, ISO 100, hand-held (tech details). Exactly as shot in JPG.

I had to watch my color histograms for this shot. If the red channel clips. the yellow spot turns paler and less saturated. In the 5D, turn on color histograms in MENU > HISTOGRAM > RGB. Now look, and keep the tit on the right side of the red channel from smashing into the right side of the graph. Next Photo >>

I hate carrying tripods. They keep me from seeing pictures. To make 1second exposures, I simply rest my camera on a window ledge. Next Photo >>

The sunstar comes from letting the sun shine directly into the lens, and stopping down to f/16. Next Photo >>
