The whole point of ultra-tele lenses is that you can turn every ordinary little sunset like this into an epic sunset by zooming in. By filling the frame with whatever little red there is, BAM!, the whole frame explodes with color. These are JPGs essentially as they came from the camera without any color fiddling.

Another advantage of an ultra-tele is that you make the disc of the sun huge. In this case I didn't move between these two snaps; I just zoomed-in. The palms you see in the better image are a very long way away. The very long lens enlarges everything to make a strong shot out of a dull one.

You have to consider depth of field; long lenses have very little. In this shot the trees are in focus, and the water beyond is not.

The Sony RX10 Mk V is Sony's best camera. Instead of having to buy and carry a slew of interchangeable lenses, the included fast f/2.4 ~ f/4 zoom covers everything from 24mm wide to 600mm ultra-tele — as well as macro, and the lens and camera together focus extremely quickly and easily track every kind of sports and action for great shots at 30 FPS.

The smaller sensor of the RX10 V, exactly like the previous RX10 IV (2017~2025) and earlier RX10 III (2016-2017), allows ZEISS and Sony to create an amazing lens that does so much more in a much smaller package than anything possible in APS-C or Full-Frame.

This is because the laws of optics have a lot of exponents in them, which means that even though the RX10's sensor has only a 2.8× crop factor, the actual amount the lens' elements have to move to focus are reduced much, much, much further than in larger cameras. Therefore tiny movements of the lens' elements give us instant focus from macro to infinity and fantastic stabilization. Bravo!

It's so good, so competent and so much fun to use that it's addicting. Once I picked it up, I couldn't stop shooting with it; there isn't anything it doesn't seem to do well, all without ever having to change a lens. I haven't shown sports shots here, but even the Mark III from ten years ago easily tracked players all over the field in ways that full frame cameras couldn't.

Sony sold the previous RX10 IV for eight years from 2017 ~ 2025. It was selling new for $1,799 when it was discontinued in 2025, and at the end of June 2026 people were paying $2,000 or more for used Mark IVs before thins Mark V came out (of course used Mark IVs have dropped now).

The Mark V is good at everything and priced accordingly. It is loaded with decades of Sony's expertise in image sensors and has a superb ultrasharp Zeiss lens. Quality doesn't come cheap.

It's an excellent camera with an extraordinary 24~600mm equivalent zoom lens. It's sharp and focuses super-fast at all focal lengths. I never run out of range; its zoom goes and goes and goes and never seems to stop. It's about a stop faster than other long telephoto zooms, with a fast f/4 at the long end.

The RX10 V has a fantastic viewfinder, built-in stabilization and great high-ISO performance so it's easy to shoot hand-held under any light.

It's superb for sports; it really does lock-on to faces and track them as they run down the field, and its non-rolling electronic shutter lets it run silently at 30 frames per second as it tracks everything.

It's fantastic in that not only can I get head shots out on the field at 600mm, and that I don't have to change lenses to cover the close-in shots before and after the game. Want a camera for shooting surfing from shore? Here you go!

Its fantastic long lens makes it ideal for bird and nature shooters, paparazzi, surveillance, law enforcement, code compliance, homeowners' associations and nosy neighbors giving great, tight shots in any light silently from any distance, all without looking like a big scary camera to frighten your game. I can fill the frame with a person down at the pool from the tenth floor of a resort. I can look down the coastline from my balcony and see which tables are occupied at a restaurant three miles away!

The RX10 Mk V's silent shutter lets newsmen, corporate and industrial photographers cover anything without intruding. Concert, medical and drama photographers and private investigators will love it, too. It really does do everything well: ultra-wide, ultra tele, macro, low light, sports, action and you name it.

Sony's cameras have come a long, long way in the past few years, and the RX10 V is astonishing in how much it does so well. For most things for most casual photographers, this RX10 Mk V will make more and better photos faster than an interchangeable-lens camera. This Sony will save you the trouble of having to change lenses and settings all the time; once set, it just goes faster than most people can juggle a mirrorless system to do the same thing — and it has a much better shutter and flash system than any mirrorless.

The Mark V's only real competition is that the eight-year older RX10 Mark IV and ten-year old RX10 Mark III do everything almost as well. While I had no problem shooting sports at 5 FPS with full tracking with a ten-year old RX10 Mark III, the RX10 Mark IV runs at 24 FPS with full tracking, which is more than enough. The Mark V runs at 30 FPS, which I'll call a wash. The takeaway is that all three of these cameras work magnificently!

If you use flash, and I always do for daylight fill, there is a HUGE difference among these three models. While all three have ultra-fast 1/1,000 to 1/2,000 flash sync due to their leaf shutters, and the RX10 Mark IV and RX10 Mark III each have an excellent built-in flash, this Mark V has NO built-in flash.

Get an RX10 Mark IV or RX10 Mark III instead if you ever use flash; the built in works great (much better than in other cameras) and makes better pictures with it than the V makes without flash.

A cool fact is that Sony pulled the standard dedicated hot shoe contacts from both theRX10 Mark III and RX10 Mark IV, but for the past ten years I never thought to look since the built-in flash worked so well in the older cameras! The old RX10 Mark III and RX10 Mark IV also have the newest "multi-interface" contacts for use with modern Sony-compatible flash like the Godox iT32.

The Sony HVL-F28RMA or Godox iT32 are the best flash to get for the Mark V if you use flash for fill, while honestly I'd rather use the built in and not have to buy and carry another flash to do what the built-in does for free in the older cameras. Remember, with the superb leaf shutter and ultrafast sync speeds of all of these three cameras, even the built-in has plenty of power in direct sunlight for great fill. 

A huge plus is that the Mark V charges via modern universal USB-C, while the old Mark IV and Mark III have no USB-C connection and instead charge over Micro USB, if you can find a cable for it.

The RX 10 V shoots at up to 30 FPS with full tracking autofocus, handles very well and makes-great looking photos. My RX10 V's pictures are always sharp, clear and well-exposed, better than I get from many other cameras that require more fiddling from shot to shot. This camera just gets out of the way by setting itself instantly and delivering fantastic pictures.

Video is superb, and even has Slo-Mo options that allow you to wait to trigger your recording until after your action (think bubble popping) happens! See Usage.

It's made in Thailand and charges via USB-C.

Auto ISO works great; it's easy to set the minimum and maximum ISOs as well as the minimum shutter speeds. Better, it's just as easy to program the slowest speed to vary with focal length, and we have several options to shift it (all automatically) from there. Auto ISO also saves and recalls with the Memory Recall modes.

If its 600mm equivalent lens isn't enough, digital zoom works great when you shoot at the lower resolution settings I use since it simply crops accordingly without having to resample, keeping the images just as sharp as optical zoom!

The electronic viewfinder (EVF) is always at the perfect brightness from night to direct sunlight. It's always sharp, colorful, and seems as if it's live with no apparent delay. EVFs have come a long way in the past few years, and Sony's are the best.

It can shoot completely silently. No one knows I took any pictures.

My RX10 Mk V shoots instantly, fast enough even for drive-by-shooting, and my pictures look fantastic as-shot with no tweaking needed. This is what a camera is supposed to be; I can't help but love this Sony to death!

That's 99% of my review; the Sony DSC-RX10 Mark V is a superb camera. It's easy to poke fun of super-zoom cameras because earlier ones were so fuzzy, slow and had to be held at arm's length, but once you shoot with the RX10 Mk V, you'll find it hard not to love. It's quite an advance in the state-of-the-art in ultrazoom cameras - and so are the very similar RX10 Mark IV and RX10 Mark III.

5,472 × 3,648 pixels native (19.96 MP).

8.8 × 13.2mm, also marketed as "one inch," which it is not. This "one inch sensor" is nowhere near an inch in size and much smaller than a mirrorless sensor. It's not much bigger than a cell phone camera's sensor.

2.745× crop factor.

3:2 native aspect ratio, with 3:4, 16:9 and square (1:1) crops available. I program a button to allow fast selection of the different crops.

Zooming       specifications       top

It zooms either via the electronic zoom ring or the little lever around the shutter. The lever has two zoom speeds and the ring seems to have many.

It retracts just a little as zoomed from 24mm to 75mm equivalent, and at 78mm equivalent is back at the 24mm mark on the barrel. From 78mm to 600mm equivalent it gets longer and longer and longer.

Mechanical Leaf Shutter

The leaf shutter only runs to 1/2,000 at f/8 and smaller. At f/7.1 and wider the top speed is only 1/1,000 because the leaf shutter blades need more time to traverse the larger area.

There is NO built-in flash.

Flash syncs at every mechanical shutter speed, which is 1/1,000 at all apertures and 1/2,000 at f/8 and smaller.

Flash will not work with the electronic shutter.

The Mark V's "multi-interface" shoe requires a flash with the newest 9-pin shoe connectors like the HVL-F28RMA, HVL-F46RM or HVL-F60RM2. Older Sony flash like the HVL-F20AM won't work properly on the Mark V.

The hot shoe has 20 pins with power for use with all sorts of microphones and other accessories, but no traditional dedicated hot shoe contacts for older dedicated flashes.

Personally I suggest the Godox iT32 with the X5S Sony module.

Overall       performance       top

The RX10 Mk V is a real eye-opener. Sony has pulled out all the stops to give us a camera that honestly gives us a one-piece alternative to a full-frame mirrorless and several zooms in a much smaller package.

This camera is as fast and just as good optically as my bigger cameras —and I don't have to change lenses. Yes, its sensor isn't much bigger than in my iPhone, but sensors are so good today that it doesn't matter, and by using a smaller sensor Sony has been able to design a lens around it that does things that no larger lens can do. Sony has decades and decades of experience making video cameras with long-range zooms, and many decades of sensor experience (I was an application engineer for Sony's CCDs over 30 years ago!), and they've put all this together into one fantastic camera.

If you need a camera with a great ultrawide to ultra-tele lens, this is the best there is. I can't get a lens with this broad a zoom range for any mirrorless camera at any price.

 

Autofocus       performance       top

Autofocus is fantastic. It's fast and sure in any light, even with moving targets.

 

Manual Focus       performance       top

The great news is that I never need manual focus.

If you do need it, there's a selector switch on the lens.

There is no instant manual-focus override; the manual focus ring is ignored except in the DMF and Manual focus modes.

DMF gives instant manual override, but only from the AF-S autofocus mode.

 

Bokeh       performance       top

Bokeh, the feel, character or quality of out-of-focus areas as opposed to how far out of focus they are, is excellent, even if things never get that far out of focus due to the shorter actual focal lengths compared to interchangeable-lens cameras.

As with all lenses, shoot at the 600mm setting at f/4 focused as close as possible for the softest backgrounds.

 

Distortion       performance       top

At shot as JPG, the RX10 Mk V has no visible or measurable distortion at any setting, meaning any correction would require a factor of less than ±0.10 in Photoshop's Lens Correction Filter.

The camera is smart enough to correct any lens distortion automatically, so you never see it either in the finder or in your photos.

I suspect if you shoot raw and use non-Sony software to open the file that the distortion may not be automatically corrected as I suspect is happening as I shoot it.

 

Falloff       performance       top

Just as with Distortion, falloff is automatically corrected, so there is no visible light falloff (darkening) in the corners.

 

Exposure       performance       top

As I expect from mirrorless cameras, exposures are almost always perfect, regardless of how crazy the light.

The Program exposure mode is optimized to shoot at large apertures to minimize diffraction for the sharpest results. The extremely high linear resolution of this camera's small sensor exaggerates softening due to diffraction. If you shoot at smaller apertures, even at f/8 you will get softer results than at f/4. The superb Zeiss lens is ultrasharp, even wide-open.

The large apertures give the softest possible backgrounds. If you want smaller apertures; just turn the rear dial to shift the program.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com I love having a Focus Lock button, but it is not in an easy place to use it. It needs to be further forward, where the manual focus ring is. Sadly the manual focus ring rarely does anything, but it's right where our fingers go and is usually what we want to move. The zoom and focus ring positions should be reversed.

It goes to sleep after a few minutes of disuse and retracts the lens automatically. While asleep, tapping the shutter or menu button wakes it back up and erects the lens back to the same zoom setting. If you turn it off, it wakes at the 24mm setting.

The Playback-mode button-function markings aren't in blue; they're in the same white as everything else, making it more confusing.

Flare and ghosts are a bit less well controlled than other cameras, but still nothing I notice unless I go out of my way to excite them.

There's no mystery to comparing cameras; I shoot this same test at all the ISOs in every other camera I review so you can compare for yourself. Caveat: I repainted these walls white from their previous tan as of the beginning of 2023, so the background wall won't match in older reviews, and this set is lit by natural light which is different every day.

As seen at normal image sizes below, the RX10 V pretty much makes the same images from ISO 64 (L) to ISO 3,200.

ISO 6,400 gets a very little bit blotchy, and ISO 12,800 gets blotchier, but still quite usable if I need it for normal-sized images.

This is typical performance in 2026; all cameras work just fine for online image sizes at insanely high ISOs. Honestly I never use anything above ISO 10,000. If you have to use five-digit ISOs you're doing something wrong, and no one needs six-digit ISOs other than for fooling around. Photography is all about light and lighting, so if you have no light, you should be working on improving that light rather than worrying about which camera makes the least awful photos in bad situations.

Here are crops from the same images as above, showing the clock on the right.

I must apologize: I have my sharpening set as high as I can (+9), and therefore it's increasing the visible noise. Set to its normal strength there is much less noise, but not to worry: what's important is the signal (subject detail) to noise ratio, not the absolute level of each, because we always can sharpen or add noise reduction to our images afterwards to taste.

What we see at the high magnifications below is that fine details go away as the ISO increases. This happens with all cameras (and our own eyes) and is an artifact of the noise reduction working harder as the ISO increases.

In the RX1- V, the most detail is at ISO 64 (L), and becomes softer at every higher ISO. This is normal and how noise reduction works in every camera.

ISO 64 is a "pull" ISO, and thus has more highlight contrast. This usually increases perceived highlight detail, and can lead to clipped highlights if you have too much subject contrast, as in the case of the window reflection in the glass of the clock face.

By ISO 1,600 most of the detailed scrollwork between the clock numbers is gone.

By ISO 6,400 the minute marks are mostly gone.

By ISO 12,800 all the detail is gone from the clock face, leaving only the numbers. Even the second hand is starting to disappear.

It's normal in all digital cameras for details to go away at higher ISOs. The differences between cameras are in how much detail is lost, and at what ISOs.

These are 600 × 450 pixel crops.

If these are about 3" (7.5cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at 18½ × 28" (50 × 75 cm) at this same magnification.

Macro Performance       performance       top

Macro performance is wonderful.

At 24mm it gets so close that it's difficult to get any light on our subject because it's right in front of our lens.

For best results, shoot at the 600mm end so you can stand far enough away to get light on your subject and not make it look funny.

There's no need for any macro buttons; it simply focuses right up to the front of the lens at the wide setting. It focuses so close that you'll have a hard time getting light on your subject, since it's pretty much touching the lens:

It has different close-focus distances at different focus length settings, giving the largest magnifications at the ends of the zoom range, with the best results at 50mm and 600mm. It gives slightly more magnification at 50mm, but there's not much working room in front of the lens, so I skipped it here (see samples at different focal lengths in my RX10 IV review).

At f/8

It's actually a bit softer where it's in focus at f/8 due to the laws of physics. f/8 shows a lot of diffraction (softening) on this small sensor, so avoid these smaller apertures unless you need depth-of-field. This ins;t a flaw of the lens, it's limitations of the fabric of the universe. An advantage is that you'll see that the wide-open f/4 example above actually has lots of depth-of-field as things go in macro.

Mechanics       performance       top

The RX10 Mk V is mostly plastic.

The only metal exterior parts of the RX10 V are its focus and zoom rings, exposure compensation knob, strap lugs, tripod socket and screws.

Everything else is plastic. The top cover, mode dial, zoom lever, shutter button, power switch, top buttons, lens filter threads, lens front barrel, aperture ring, lens rear barrel, focus mode switch, focus lock button, left and right sides, grip, both connector covers, memory card door, bottom cover and the battery door are all plastic.

The RX10 Mk V's lens has to motor out and then back in every time it turns off. These complex and delicate plastic mechanisms eventually break or get jammed, but people usually replace these cameras at about the same time the warranty expires. This isn't a LEICA M3 or Hasselblad 500 C/M that will still be working well 50 years from now. Like all digital cameras, this is something you buy to take loads of great pictures for the next few years, and then replace with something even better three or four years from now.

The good news is ever since I reviewed my first RX10 Mk III in 2017 that I've not heard any reports of dead RX10s. They seem more durable than pocket-sized point-and-shoots which usually die of erectile disfunction from small amounts of grit getting lodged in their tiny erectile mechanisms which make those cameras completely flat when turned off.

 

Noise and Vibration       performance       top

The RX10 Mk V has a quiet leaf shutter; much quieter than a LEICA and certainly quieter than any focal plane shutter.

Even better, the RX10 V also has a completely silent electronic shutter. In this mode, the RX10 shoots completely silently; no one will know you've taken any pictures.

 

Sharpness       performance       top

The Zeiss lens is superbly sharp at every setting, especially wide-open where you most often will be shooting.

The Program auto exposure often shoots wide-open, and the darn thing is always super sharp throughout the entire frame, even at 600mm.

If you're not getting sharp pictures, you're doing something wrong, like letting your subject move or shooting through heat shimmer at longer zoom settings, or foolishly shooting at a higher ISO. Let Auto ISO and Program mode do their work and shoot at ISO 100 with the lens wide-open for the sharpest photos.

 

Spherochromatism       performance       top

Spherochromatism, also called secondary spherical chromatic aberration or "color bokeh," can cause colored fringes on out-of-focus highlights, usually seen as green fringes on background highlights and magenta fringes on foreground highlights.

Spherochromatism is common in fast lenses of moderate and long focal lengths when shooting contrasty items at full aperture. It goes away as stopped down.

Spherochromatism is when the spherical aberration at the red and blue ends of the color spectrum (which together make magenta) is corrected differently than in the middle of the spectrum (green).

Spherochromatism is an advanced form of spherical and chromatic aberration in a different dimension than lateral color fringes and therefore cannot be corrected with software or automatic corrections.

The great news is that after all this explaining, this lens has no significant spherochromatism:

Image Stabilization       performance       top

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS, IS, OSS or VR (Vibration Reduction)) works well, with three to four real-world stops of tested improvement.

We're all different, and I can get 100% perfect tripod-equivalent sharpness hand-held almost all of the time at 1/8 at 24mm, 1/15 at 50mm, 1/30 at 100mm and 1/125 from 250mm to 600mm.

"Percent Perfectly Sharp Shots" are the percentage of hand-held, free-standing with no support or bracing, frames with 100% perfect tripod-equivalent sharpness as viewed at 300% on a 100 DPI monitor.

Looking at images at 300% on my 100 DPI monitor from 2½ feet (76cm) away are the same as scrolling around a 15 × 10 foot (4.5 × 3 meters!) print, from just 2½ feet (76cm) away — and images are still perfectly sharp most of the time hand-held at 1/8 of a second. Bravo!

Of course we all will get different results hand-holding. While your speeds will vary, the number of stops of improvement should be the same for all of us regardless of who's shooting.

Hand tremor is a random occurrence, so at marginal speeds some frames will be perfectly sharp while others will be in various stages of blur — all at the same shutter speed.

This rates what percentage of shots are perfectly sharp, not how sharp are all the frames:

Sunstars       performance       top

With a 9-bladed rounded diaphragm, I get soft but reasonably strong 18-point sunstars on brilliant points of light mostly at the smaller apertures.

Ignore the crazy rainbow dots at small apertures; these are sensor artifacts caused by interference among the divisions between pixels on the sensor. These are made visible because we're using enough exposure to show the dark underside of a huge palm tree, and then putting the blinding disk of the mid-day sun in it. Doing this will show everything due to the insane lighting range.

Zooming       performance       top

This incredible lens zooms very well. It's easy to set precise framing with the zoom ring, and just as easily you can use the little zoom lever in front of the shutter button to get in-range quickly. The zoom lever works at two speeds.

The finder reports the equivalent focal length as you zoom from 24mm to 600mm, while the file's EXIF (and file information in Playback mode) reports the actual focal lengths from 9.1 to 210mm.

In A mode, the lens always uses the aperture set on the aperture ring from f/4 to f/16. The lens has a variable maximum aperture, but the aperture ring has fixed markings. If you set wider than f/4 and the lens can't go there at longer zoom settings, no worries, the lens simply uses its widest aperture.

I find the zoom ring is too far back; I often turn the front (focus) ring by mistake. The functions of the focus and zoom rings should be reversed.

 

Movies       performance       top

I didn't spend much time with movies. Sony's been defining the state-of-the-art in video cameras for way over 60 years, so I doubt there's much I can add.

Not only does it shoot all sorts of high definition and 4K content; it also runs at frame rates up to 120 FPS for slow motion.

 

Rear LCD Monitor       performance       top

The LCD is sharp, bright and colorful - but TINY and no match for any iPhone.

It has no auto brightness control, but always seems to look well in any light.

I rarely use the rear LCD; I prefer the electronic finder, but to each their own.

The rear LCD pivots up or down, but not left or right, and it can't flip far enough for self-portraits.

 

Playback          performance       top

You have to turn on the RX10 and let the lens motor out to play. You can't just hold the PLAY button.

Playback is fast and fine; no difference here from other Sony models.

The finder has a 4:3 aspect ratio and the rear LCD is 3:2.

If you shoot 4:3 crops, the image has black bars on the sides while shooting, but in playback, the 4:3 images grow to fill the entire finder compared to standard 3:2 images.

All image shapes fill the screen when zoomed.

Shots made in continuous mode usually play back grouped together, not as individual shots. This makes it a pain to review them, but easy to delete them all at once.

Card Formatting

Cards are not titled properly. They are titled as "Untitled" instead of being titled something meaningful like "SONYRX10."

 

Image Sizes and Crops

At lower resolution settings, the RX10 Mk V is nice in that it tends to retain the same amount of megapixels as the crops are changed. In other words, if shooting at 10 megapixels as I usually do, you get 10 megapixels at either of the native 3:2 or cropped 4:3 settings.

 

Vertical Shots

Like most digital cameras, vertical shots are merely flagged for rotation and not actually rotated. No one notices unless you try to view the image in software that doesn't recognize the rotation flags.

 

JPGs

JPG files are expertly coded; file sizes vary with image complexity for constant quality.

They are tagged as 350 DPI.

 

Daily Folder Creation

Power & Battery       performance       top

My battery seems to run forever on a charge, so I see no need for a spare NP-FZ100 for even a hard day's shooting.

Like most mirrorless cameras, I can get 10,000 shots on a charge if I'm making long continuous sequences of shots (think sports) rather than shooting a frame at a time.

Mine draws 13 watts (9 volts at 1.5 amperes) charging via USB-C.

Get one; I'm astounded at how this one amazing camera can replace an entire mirrorless system.

It's especially great for people who need an ultralong lens; if a 24-70mm is enough, the RX100 Mk V is about the same thing in a much smaller package, but if you need 600mm for sports and nature and sunsets and surveillance, there's nothing like the RX10 V (or the older RX10 Mk IV or oldest RX10 Mk III). This is not your mom's point-and-shoot.

Sony has come a long, long way in recent years, and as you can see this RX10 Mk V may be the only camera you need for everything.

Protection

I never use the hood; it doesn't actually do anything. I leave my hood in the box for resale time.

I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of a cap (exactly like an iPhone) so I'm always ready to shoot instantly. I only use a cap when I throw this in a bag with other gear without padding — which is never. The UV filter never gets in the way, and never gets lost, either.

The very best protective filter is the 72mm Hoya multicoated HD3 UV which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints.

For less money, the B+W 72mm 010 MRC MASTER, Hoya 72mm NXT Plus and even the most basic Hoya 72mm multicoated UV all work great to protect this lens with varying degrees of environmental toughness, while the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and longest-lasting in the field.

Filters last a lifetime, so you may as well get the best. The Hoya HD3 stays cleaner than the others since it repels oil and dirt.

All these filters are just as sharp and take the same pictures, the difference is how much abuse they'll take and stay clean and stay in one piece. Since filters last a lifetime or more, there's no reason not to buy the best as it will last you for the next 50 years. Filters aren't throwaways like digital cameras which we replace every few years, like it or not. I'm still using filters I bought back in the 1970s!
