San Diego
24-26 June 2011

These are snaps from Dave Wyman's photo tour of San Diego.

These were shot on the Fuji X100 as NORMAL JPGs (more compressed than default).

No tripods were used, ever. That would not be professional, and the Fuji X100 has such a fast lens and high ISO speeds that the X100 makes tripods obsolete.

Most of the night shots were made at the 5,900K white balance setting.

Most of the shots not at night were given a 30% saturation boost and some shadow darkening with curves layers in Photoshop CS5 to wake them up.

I left my X100 in Auto (P) Exposure, auto WB, auto ISO, auto dynamic range and I forget what else, and just pointed and shot to get these. It's so much easier than with any of my other cameras because this little Fuji is so much better at exposure, white balance, and everything than my other cameras. I just shot, instead of wasting time looking at the back of my camera after each shot.

Today we met in northern San Diego.

Quality Inn Carlsbad

Quality Inn, Carlsbad, 4:47 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 400/Auto DR 200%, 1/400 second at f7.1.)

From the motel we proceeded, after a fine catered meal, to the Oceanside pier.

Binocular Steps, Oceanside Pier

Binocular Steps, Oceanside Pier, 6:51 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 200/Auto DR 100%, 1/170 second at f/3.6.)

Fence in Liquid Gold, Oceanside Pier

Fence in Liquid Gold, Oceanside Pier, 7:22 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 200/Auto DR 100%, 1/320 second at f/5.6.)

Fence and Pole, Oceanside Pier

Fence and Pole, Oceanside Pier, 7:44 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 1,250/Auto DR 200%, 1/40 second at f/16.)

Surfer in Sunset, Oceanside Pier

God, Oceanside Pier, 7:50 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 800/Auto DR 400%, 1/480 second at f/8.)

Note how the Fuji X100 renders the sun in the sky the way it's supposed to look; not with big bright rings and circles around it as other brands of digital cameras do.

Face of the Alien, Oceanside Pier

The Face of the Alien, Oceanside Pier, 8:27 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 1,600/Auto DR 200%, 1/40 second at f/2.)

It's not just about the alien, it's also about the fuzzy gold thing on the left, and all the blue balancing with each other.

Zig Zag, Oceanside Pier

Zig-Zag, Oceanside Pier, 8:30 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 2,500/Auto DR 200%, 1/40 second at f/2.)

I deliberately Dutched (tilted) the camera to put the fence in the lower corner and knock it off balance. The unease is deliberate.

Labyrinth, Oceanside Pier

Labyrinth, Oceanside Pier, 8:30 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 1,000/Auto DR 200%, 1/40 second at f/2.)

Oceanside, Through the Looking Glass at the Pier

Oceanside, Through the Looking Glass at the Pier, 8:33 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 3,200/Auto DR 200%, 1/28 second at f/2.)

"Through the looking glass" means I flipped the negative to make the photo read correctly from left-to-right.

Golden Pier, Oceanside

Golden Pier, Oceanside, 8:35 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 3,200/Auto DR 400%, 1/28 second at f/2.)

Los Angeles at Night, 1950s

Los Angeles at Night, 1950s, 8:38 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 1,600/Auto DR 200%, 1/40 second at f/2, toned.)

We started today back at Oceanside Harbor.

Panorama of Oceanside Harbor

Oceanside Harbor, 10:34 AM. (2011 Fuji X100, panorama mode, Auto ISO 200/Auto DR 100%, 1/240 second at f/14.) Camera-original © JPG (3MB).

I shot this panorama free-hand; the Fuji X100 automatically compensates for any motion or camera shift within reason. Tripods are so last century!

Los Angeles at Night, 1950s

Dark Sky, Oceanside Condos, 10:38 AM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 800/Auto DR 400%, 1/640 second at f/10, toned.) I burnt-in the sky.

From spooky Oceanside we headed down the coast to Swami's.

God Tiki, Swami's

God Tiki, Swami's, 1:33 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 400/Auto DR 200%, 1/450 second at f/8.)

And then south from Swami's to the Torrey Pines Gliderport, from which primitive man made the first unpowered flights about 10,000 years ago. The nude beach came later, inspired by the same.

Blue Skies with Hazard, Torrey Pines Gliderport

Blue Skies with Hazard, Torrey Pines Gliderport, 1:37 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 200/Auto DR 100%, 1/320 second at f/5.6.)

Jellyfish, Scripps Aquarium

Jellyfish, Scripps Aquarium, 4:22 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 2,000/Auto DR 400%, 1/40 second at f/2, -2/3 compensation.)

Big Fish, Scripps Aquarium

Big Fish, Scripps Aquarium, 4:27 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 400/Auto DR 200%, 1/150 second at f/2.8, -1 compensation.)

Laura, Scripps Aquarium

Kelp Onlooker, Scripps Aquarium, 4:27 PM. (2011 Fuji X100, Auto ISO 800/Auto DR 400%, 1/85 second at f/2.)

26 June 2011, Sunday           top

We visited Old Mission San Luis Rey de Francia.

I ditched the digital appliances and decided to shoot real cameras today.

Laura, Scripps Aquarium

Old Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, 9:04 AM. (1963 LEICA M3, LEICAMETER MR-4, 1957 LEICA SUMMICRON 50mm f/2 with close-focusing range, focus at 50 meters, f/4 at 1/60, 39mm LEITZ Or orange filter, no tripod, EFKE KB25, NCPS process and scan, toned.)

Laura, Scripps Aquarium

Old Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, 9:08 AM. (1963 LEICA M3, LEICAMETER MR-4, 1957 LEICA SUMMICRON 50mm f/2 with close-focusing range, focus at 20 meters, f/4 at 1/60, 39mm LEITZ Or orange filter, no tripod, EFKE KB25, NCPS process and scan, toned.)

You can't see it here, but the ASA 25 EFKE KB25 film, as processed and scanned at NCPS, is at least as grainy as Kodak T-Max 100 and yields very thick and contrasty negatives. I suspect less development might be a good idea next time, but there won't be a next time as I much prefer the images I get from Kodak T-Max 100, which is also two very needed stops faster, and less expensive. The EFKE KB25 is a primitive film made in Croatia, and Kodak T-Max 100 is the most advanced B&W film on the planet. Kodak T-Max 100 gives better quality at ISO 100 (to my eye) than EFKE KB25 gives at ISO 25, which is as I expected.

Laura, Scripps Aquarium

Old Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, 9:36 AM. (Nikon N8008s, Nikon 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5D with Nikon engraved-red-letter A2 filter, set to 35mm at f/4 at 2 seconds, hand-held rested on a pew, Fuji Velvia 50, NCPS process and scan. Bigger.

N8008s, Matrix Metering, and you're done.

That's it!
