The EOS R of 2018 is Canon's first and therefore oldest full-frame mirrorless camera. The EOS R is so old that that it's deeply discounted to sell for less than the very newest - but very basic - EOS R8 of 2023. The EOS R8 is a significantly upgraded version of the basic EOS RP that was introduced in 2019.

The EOS R has always been a sturdy mid-level camera. It weighs 50% more than the lightweight and more basic and mechanically almost identical EOS R8 and EOS RP.

The EOS R has a much larger battery that gives 50% more shots per charge than either of the smaller EOS R8 or EOS RP, and has a nicer finder than the other two cameras.

The EOS R has a precise battery percentage indicator while the EOS R8 and EOS RP have only three-segment icons.

While I haven’t tested the brand-new EOS R8 yet (and I shall soon), the EOS R8 has higher rated ISO settings and I suspect the R8 is better at high ISOs than the EOS R or EOS RP. The EOS RP and EOS R have only basic high-ISO performance.

30 vs 26 or 24 MP doesn’t mean anything.

The EOS R has a strange top LCD and an even stranger “control bar.” I prefer the simpler controls of the EOS R8 and EOS RP.

The EOS R8 is rated to shoot stills at much higher frame rates than either of the EOS R or EOS RP.

** I used to work in Hollywood, where we still shoot all the good stuff at 23.976 FPS because it matches film and it's how drama looks best because the non-fluid motion helps with the suspension of disbelief critical to telling a story for a motion picture or other serious works of fiction. Higher rates are for smoother action rather that looks more like video than film.

*** A programmable "Bulb Timer" can be set for any precise exposure time up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds.

As of this writing the EOS R8 is so new that no one has seen actual shipping samples so obviously no one has shot with actual samples yet as I have with all the other models.

For a lightweight, high performance full-frame mirrorless camera I'd go with the EOS R8 because I value light weight and direct control dials. Ditto if you want to shoot at high speeds; the EOS R8 runs ten times fast than the other two for attempting track anything that moves. It's a generation apart.

Especially at its currently discounted price, the EOS R is tempting if you want a more substantial and fancier, albeit much older, camera.

On weight alone, I’d go EOS R8 unless you want a sturdier camera in the EOS R.

The EOS RP has been the world's best value in full-frame mirrorless ever since it came out in 2019, and it still is. It's great if you're on a budget and are shooting things that hold reasonably still. The EOS R8 adds ten times more speed and higher ISOs and more, but it does cost 50% ($500) more as of March 2023.
