Canon Rebel T100

Canon EF-s 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III (only comes as a kit with the $299 Canon Rebel T100, 58mm filters, 6.8 oz./193 g, 0.8'/9.6"/0.25m close focus). bigger. I got this lens with my Rebel T100.

Canon does not seal its boxes in any way, so never buy at retail or any other source not on my personally approved list since you'll have no way of knowing if you're missing accessories, getting a defective, damaged, returned, dropped, incomplete, gray-market, store demo or used camera — and my personally approved sources allow for 100% cash-back returns for at least 30 days if you don't love your new camera. I buy only from these approved sources. I can't vouch for ads below.

This is a basic kit lens that I've only seen sold as a kit with the Canon T100. I've never seen it sold by itself.

It's a swell little lens with super-close macro ability, but it has no stabilization as does the EF-s 18-55mm IS STM.

Overall       performance       top

This 18-55mm lens is sharp, but sadly lacks image stabilization for use in low-light handheld.

Auto Focus       performance       top

Autofocus is reasonably fast.

The autofocus motor is a regular motor which can make a bit of a whir as it moves.

Manual Focus       performance       top

There is no automatic manual override; you have to slide a switch.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Thank goodness there's an AF/MF switch; slide that and just turn the front of the lens.

Focus Distance Recording       performance       top

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The focused distance is recorded in the EXIF data.

I read this in the lower left of my screen in Photoshop's lens correction filter.

Distortion       performance       top

Distortion, uncorrected in the T100, is the usual strong barrel distortion at 18mm and 24mm, and none at 35mm and 55mm.

For more critical scientific use, use these corrections in Photoshop's lens correction filter to JPG images.

These aren't facts or specifications, they are the results of my research that requires hours of photography and calculations on the resulting data.

The rubberized zoom ring is the usual mechanical control.

Lateral Color Fringes       performance       top

Except for light falloff (vignetting or peripheral illumination), there are no lens corrections in the Canon T100 with which this lens ships, so you may see some cyan/red at 18mm and 30mm, and there's none at 55mm.

The softness and color fringes are from the limited depth-of-field at close distances and spherochromatism, all of which which goes away as stopped down.

If this 1,200 × 900 pixel crop is about 3" (7.5cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at 8⅔ × 13" (22 × 33 cm) at this same magnification.

I wouldn't buy this lens by itself, but as a freebie along with the Canon Rebel T100 it makes a very basic little pair.

Ideally I'd look for the stabilized EF-s 18-55mm IS STM instead.

I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of the cap (exactly like an iPhone) so I'm always ready to shoot instantly. I only use a cap when I throw this in a bag with other gear without padding — which is never. The UV filter never gets in the way, and never gets lost, either.

The very best protective filter is the Hoya multicoated HD3 58mm UV which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints, but it's way too expensive for this lens. I'd suggest the Hoya multicoated 58mm UV, and for very basic use in filthy environments the uncoated Tiffen 58mm UV works almost as well and is much easier to clean.

Filters last a lifetime, so you may as well get the best. The Hoya HD3 stays cleaner than the others since it repels oil and dirt.

All these filters are just as sharp and take the same pictures, the difference is how much abuse they'll take and stay clean and stay in one piece. Since filters last a lifetime or more, there's no reason not to buy the best as it will last you for the next 40 years. Filters aren't throwaways like digital cameras which we replace every few years, like it or not. I'm still using filters I bought back in the 1970s!

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. These places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

If you find this page as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.
