This OWC USB-C TRAVEL DOCK E is an ultra-speed UHS-II SD, SDHC and SDXC card reader, with two USB-A 3.2 connectors at 5 Gb/s, a 4K/60 HDMI 2.0 output, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a 100W USB-C power input. The USB-C connector is a power input only, not a data output or port.

I use this in the field with my 13" MacBook Pro (2017). It also works with iPads, phones, Windows computers and I suspect just about anything to which you can connect it. (more at Specifications.) It certainly works great with my 12.9" iPad Pro.

OWC are an Illinois-based American data & memory technology company that I've used for Mac memory, internal SSDs and other computer goodies for decades. It's quality made with a metal case, complete with individual serial numbers, in TAIWAN, where manufacturing costs I'm told are triple compared to dumping it to China. It has a two-year warranty; this isn't a throw-away.

It's so much more than just a travel dock; I also use mine in my studio plugged into the rear of my OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock to turn its extra rear Thunderbot 3 (USB-C) port into two more 5 Gb/s USB-A ports, giving me seven total 5 Gb/s USB-A portsl!

Call me a stickler for details, but I really appreciate the cord storage cutout and how easy it is to get the pigtail cord in and out. I also appreciate that he USB-C connector hides in a small cut-out to protect it's end from dirt!

New Since the Previous non-E model       intro       top

blue ball icon © KenRockwell.com HDMI now goes to 4K/60 rather than just 4K/30. This is important if you're using this to run a big 4K computer monitor working live with a mouse as I do, but less so if all you're doing is just playing videos, movies or presentations.

blue ball icon © KenRockwell.com Adds Gigabit Ethernet. The previous non-E model  has no Ethernet port. Ethernet means I can turn off WiFi and use my hardwired data connection.

Good       intro       top

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com OWC's very clever and free Dock Ejector software lets us disconnect all our drives at once, making it much easier and safer to disconnect and run.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Self-powered from little captive cord; run your whole system off your computer's internal battery if you like. Just plug it into your computer, pop in a card or connect self-powered USB drives and you're good to go.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Allows power pass-through so you can power and charge your computer through the same connector used by this dock.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Small blue power LED on top. It's directional so it's bright seen from directly from the top and very dim from the sides.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Ethernet port has the usual two LED indicators.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Sturdy and reliable.

Bad       intro       top

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Nothing; this is a swell little dock.

Missing       intro       top

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com What looks like a USB-C or Thunderbolt port is just a power input; you can't get data from it.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com The small blue power LED is just that; there are no connection or data flow lights for either USB or the SD card connections.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com It only has so much room so I'm not going to list all the other possible outputs, like audio and Thunderbolt that it could have. When I need bigger dock, I LOVE my OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No soft case or rubber guards; it's hard metal so be careful when you throw this in a bag.

As measured through the 40 GB/s Thunderbolt 3 port of my 13" MacBook Pro (2017) using the BlackMagic Speed Test program:

Plugging a 2,000 MB/s-rated (16 Gb/s) SSD into either USB-A 3.2 port gives me get real-world long-term data speeds of 426 MB/s (3.4 Gb/s), which is very close to the rated 5Gb/s peak rate for USB 3.2.

My OWC ATLAS S PRO 256 GB card gives me 250 MB/s (2 Gb/s) read and 178 MB/s (1,424 Gb/s) write speeds.

The dock draws 510 mW at 5V at idle from an external USB-C power supply connected to its USB-C power input.

The dock draws 2.56 W at 5V at idle with its captive cord plugged into my 13" MacBook Pro (2017)'s Thunderbolt 3 port.

I can get an ampere or more at 5V (5W) out of either USB-A port, but only when connected to a computer. One cannot use this dock alone with a USB-C power source as a USB charger; plug it into a computer first and then it works.

Actual measured weight: 6.365 oz. (180.5 g).
