Canon EOS R6 Mark II with Canon EF 50mm f/1.0 L USM on EF to RF Ring Adapter.
As mentioned yesterday, everything from Japanese companies is on sale, with the Yen at a 35-year low against the American dollar.
Among the deals are that the Canon EOS R6 Mark II is back at its historic black-Friday, pre-Christmas sales price:
R6 Mark II body-only: $1,999 at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield, or about $1,840 used if you know How to Win at eBay.
R6 Mark II w/RF 24-105mm IS STM: $2,299 at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield.
R6 Mark II w/RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: $3,099 at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield.
As I've mentioned before, my reviews track the prices of each camera from when it was new through today. In the case of the R6 II's prices, my review shows you exactly this; the last time it was only $1,999 was from the 7th through the 16th of December 2023.
World's Best? YES! As my review says, I've shot everything that's been made pretty much since the 1940s, and the R6 Mark II is the best camera I've ever used. It's not just technical image quality; it's also its flawless autofocus and magnificent ergonomics and its high speed, making it ideal for landscapes as well as sports and action. You can pay more, and we all have our preferences, but you can't get get a better camera at any price than the R6 Mark II.
I pity all of you with Nikon Z8s. I've been shooting mine with my new Z 28-400mm and Z 180-600mm, and I forgot how bad is the Nikon Z system's autofocus. While Nikon shooters are used to having maybe one frame out of every ten out-of-focus in action sequences, I don't have that problem on Canon, with which almost all my shots are in perfect focus. Canon used to have this problem back in the 1990s, while today the problem is in most, if not all, of the Nikon Z cameras. Sorry, Nikon Z autofocus is poor, meaning that too often it just misses with moving things.
Heh heh, this is the benefit of not taking ads or favors from camera companies, which means I can tell the truth, as I always do, without any commercial bias.
😇

US Dollar Days!
The US dollar today is at its highest level against the Japanese yen in thirty five years, thus everything is on sale as far as we're concerned. While inflation runs rampant on everything else, cameras are going down if anything. All the majors have been dumping prices as of May 1st when we pay in US Dollars. God Bless America!

This is an an issue with all scopes and ultra telephoto, and is the limiting factor in sharpness with the new Nikon Z 28-400mm at 400mm, so I figured it was time to expose this defect in out atmosphere.
Nikon F6 and Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-D.
I added updated versions of these two snaps:

HASSELBLAD 503 CX with 80mm f/2.8 CF lens, A12 back and waist-level finder.
11 Years Gone
It was 11 years ago today the greatest camera system ever to grace the earth and to grace the Moon, the HASSELBLAD system, was discontinued.
Sadly nothing practical digital today shares the genuine medium-format 6×6 cm image area of the A12 magazines. Today's digital HASSELBLADs are largely forgettable as they use tiny 3×4 cm sensors not much bigger than Full Frame. Today's HASSELBLADs still cost astronomical amounts as they always have, however I don't see their images as any better than from my Canons or Nikons.
Although his earliest and often most iconic work was on larger formats. Ansel Adams shot most of his work on HASSELBLAD, and today if I want great B&W images, I'll shoot it on my HASSELBLAD on Fuji ACROS 100 II.
See my Guide to the HASSELBLAD System.

Canon EOS R100 and RF-S 18-45mm.
The lightest mirrorless camera with a viewfinder, the R100 is now $100 off, making it a huge bargain for people who demand light weight:
R100 Body: $379 at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield.
R100 & RF-S 18-45mm as shown: $499 at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield.
R100, RF-S 18-45mm & RF-S-55-210mm: $729 at B&H, at Adorama, at Amazon and at Crutchfield.
(About $350 used with lens if you know How to Win at eBay.)
Ideally get the R100 as a body-only and get the RF-S 18-150mm lens separately. This lets me do what the 2-lens kit does, without having to carry and change lenses.
25 April 2024, Thursday
The Z 28-400mm is already a hugely popular lens. The first one for sale used at eBay has already been bid to more than the new price.
It's lightweight, easy to carry and handle and covers a huge zoom range.
Yes, it's sharp. Like most ultrazooms, most difficult part is staying sharp at the 400mm end.
At 400mm at f/8 it readily enlarges the effects of atmospheric heat shimmer, and almost all my shots made of things on the ground simply show these softening effects, which are no fault of the lens other than its ability to magnify this atmospheric effect enough for us to see it.
Looking up, it's sharp:
Crane, 12:16 PM, Saturday, 20 April 2024. Nikon Z8, Nikon Z 28-400mm at 400mm wide-open at f/8 hand-held at 1/400 at Auto ISO 140 (LV 14⅙), exactly as shot. bigger or camera-original © JPG file.
1,200 × 900 pixel (5â…™× magnification) crop from above. bigger or camera-original © JPG file.
If this 1,200 × 900 pixel crop is about 3" (7.5cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same large magnification would be about 10 × 15" (25 × 38cm).
If this 1,200 × 900 pixel crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same extreme magnification would be about 20 × 30" (50 × 75cm).
If this 1,200 × 900 pixel crop is about 12" (30cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same insanely high magnification would be about 40 × 60" (1 × 1.5 meters).

Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z.
I thought it would be too big, while in fact it's joy to shoot as one of the only Canon RF Zooms that doesn't change size or balance as zoomed; a gentle fingertip is all it takes!
I got my RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z at B&H. I'd also get it at Adorama, at Amazon or at Crutchfield, or used at eBay (How to Win at eBay).
It's hard to get; order yours and be patient as I did otherwise you'll pay about $3,100 used at eBay. Yes, that's more than the new price; it's this good and in demand.

12 April 2024, Friday
Here are some snaps from the other night from my new Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM. Of course my review is under construction, and as a sneak peak I really like this lens. It's about the same size and weight as a 70-200mm f/2.8, and the craziest thing is how wonderfully it zooms: one fingertip is all it takes, even pointed straight up or down. It's big, fast, sharp and so much more useful than the limited range of a 24-70mm lens. It has four control rings: a programmble click ring up front for ISO or exposure compensation or etc., a focus ring, a real mechanical zoom ring, and an aperture ring!

The Focus Pro uses the same LIDAR LASER distance-modelling technology as the iPhone to let it focus fast, even in pitch black.
The Focus Pro, RS4 and RS4 Pro are also at Adorama. Honestly I don't use any of these; all this technology is already in my iPhone 15 Pro Max which uses LIDAR LASER RADAR autofocus and electronic and mechanical internal gimbaling so all my hand-held shots come out super smooth and always in perfect focus. Try it and see!
iPhone video is captured and plays back much more smoothly than it appears while shooting. iPhone is simply amazing and pretty much blows all these complex and expensive external gimbals out of the water.
This is a very professional audio item and I didn't know (but am not surprised) that B&H carries them. I've known the guys (actually Wes) at AEA personally since the 1990s when I worked in Hollywood every day. Wes and his crew are insane when it comes to hand-building and servicing professional ribbon mics right in the Hollywood/Burbank (actually Pasadena) area. These guys make an incredible product, presuming you want a ribbon mike, by which some pro audio engineers swear.
Ribbon mics were the standard in stage and studio decades before condenser mics became the rage. They have a different sound that the best engineers know how and when to use.
Do you know what mic is used as the model for the universal MIC icon we see on our iPhones when making phone calls and everywhere else? It's the RCA 77 DX ribbon mic introduced in 1948 which are still used (and sell used for thousands of dollars) today, and which AEA still services! Dig it!
Solar Eclipse Monday, 08 April 2024
Here's what I got:
Partial Solar Eclipse (moon partially covering sun). bigger.
I shot it with this rig:
Basic solar filter on Canon EF 100-400mm L II IS USM on Canon EF TC 2× II extender on Canon EF TC 1.4× II extender on Canon EF to RF Ring adapter on Canon EOS R6 II on Nikon AH-5 Tripod Adapter on Manfrotto 410 (née Bogen 3275) Geared Head on my original 1995 Gitzo M1228 Mountaineer Carbon-Fibre Tripod, April 2024. bigger.
This rig has so much magnification (1,120 actual millimeters) that you can see how large is the image, and this is on full frame! The solar filter is the one I ordered from B&H on a flash sale last week, and which showed up in days exactly as they promised.
Devil's Dawn, Mono Lake, California, 9:25 A.M., Saturday, 14 October 2023. Canon EOS R6 II and EF 100-400mm L II IS USM on EF to RF Ring adapter.
I added some more photos and tips from today on how to enjoy an eclipse with friends and family and not go crazy with gear.
Personally I bought a stack of these German-made solar glasses to enjoy with friends, and otherwise I'm not going to try to make the same astro photos everyone else does.
If I get some encouragement I'm tempted to make a last-minute road trip to Texas, but I doubt I'd want to tote my big orange Celestron 8. Honestly my biggest interest is to feel what it's like to have the world go dark in the middle of the afternoon. I'd probably want to be out in the middle of nowhere away from lights and hordes of astro fans, just to feel what happens. Even if it's overcast, I'm good.

Today-Only Solar Sale
I've used these for the photo below. You hold these inexpensive cardboard-mounted filters over the front of your lens and you're golden.
Actually, I borrowed the filter I used for the shot below, so I just took advantage of this sale to order two of these for myself. I got two not so much for binocular use, but that this way I'll have one to share should I be with any friends. I used to think these were expensive or complicated; they're not.

My Workflow
Reader Doug asked me for an article explaining the tools I use in my photo workflows, from simple snaps I share with my friends all the way up to what I shoot for a living or enter in contests.
How do I sort, archive, touch-up and so forth? Doug imagines I use different platforms (e.g. iPhone, workstation) for different kinds of photos.
It turns out that I treat every photo pretty much the same way. I shoot it on whatever, be it my iPhone 15 Pro Max or my favorite R6 II, and then run it through the same process.
I cover this workflow in detail in the "tech” sections of each new photo gallery. Here’s how I did everything last month for Route 66.
It says I pull everything into my Mac and put it on my external Samsung 8TB SATA SSD in a 2.5" SATA to USB-C enclosure, then see what I have and pick the winners in Photo Mechanic. Once prioritized, I drag the best into Photoshop CC for creative optimization.
I'll usually use the Radiant Photo plugin to optimize people and product shots, and also often use the Skylum Luminar Neo plugin for my landscape and nature shots to shoot them out of this world.
I also use Photoshop CC for any mechanics of juggling image sizes and formats and layering copyright notices and everything else to take a file and add any needed magic.
I ONLY shoot JPGs, NEVER raw data. I easily can change exposure, white balance and recover lost highlights and shadows from my basic JPGs with the software above. I don't use Adobe Camera Raw, but guess what: it works the same way if you use it to open a JPG!
I treat all my photos the same, be they iPhone snaps or formal shots. With iPhone often I’ll play with them in the free Snapseed app on my iPhone before I blast them off to friends.
While smart people order theirs brand-new for $1,599 at B&H in black, at B&H in silver, at Adorama in black or at Adorama in silver and wait a few weeks or months for it to arrive, the less clever are now paying an average of $2,375 used at eBay.
The most recently resales in the past 24 hours have resold at an average price of $2,375 — even if you know How to Win at eBay. If you don;t get it from an authorized dealer, it's not legally new and even with the receipt and papers may not have a warranty.
This has gone on for thousands of of years. Some of us order things as soon as we can or are willing to be patient to get them at the best price, while others get gouged when they want it NOW and didn't think ahead the first minute they should have ordered this.

The desktop version of Neo is what I use on a lot of my images to take them from plain to insane pretty easily.
While I use Photoshop CC 2021 for all the basic manipulations, corrections and technical aspects of publishing final images, Neo is an artistic tool which lets me add the crazy back into my images they may lack right out of the camera.

Sony A9 III with Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G.
I added more about its ergonomics, AF system and added my usual lab samples at all its ISO settings. Its totally new sensor technology lets it do what we need, which is 120 FPS with 1/80,000 flash sync, but if all you want is six-figure high ISOs, it's actually worse than a basic Canon EOS R8; just compare the A9 III at any particular ISO with with the R8 at the same ISOs.
Also the past few days I added all new reviews of the genuinely new FE 20-70mm f/4 G and also unique new FE 70-200mm f/4 Macro OSS G II.

$130 Off: Sony 160GB 750 MB/s CFexpress Type A: $268. See why I boycott Type A? It's because it's a Sony-specific format where the cards cost over twice as much for only half the speed of type B (see the deal immediately above)!
My entire photo, audio, music and video archive lives in a Samsung 8TB SATA SSD in a 2.5" SATA to USB-C enclosure. I went to an SSD last year as while my old hard drive worked great, it was annoying to have to wait for it to spin-up each time I wanted to access it. The SSD it always on and ready without worrying out running the HDD all day and night.
Of course this drive works also with USB-C, just that USB-C doesn't go quite as fast, but plug it into your Mac's Thunderbolt port and it's as fast as an internal drive.

Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 Macro G OSS II.
Nikon Lens Scope Converter.
The Lens Scope Converter is an eyepiece that attaches to the back of an F-mount lens to make it into a telescope.

$397 Off (open box w/full new warranty): Nikon Zf: $1,600.
Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G.
This is the world's only full-frame ultra wide to short-tele zoom.
It can replace the need to carry a second ultrawide zoom along with a 24-70mm. Even better, it also has great optics, it's compact, reasonably priced and focuses so super close so it may also replace a separate macro lens!
Bravo, Sony!
01 March 2024, Crutchfield's 50th Anniversary!
Lots more used X100VI have sold at an average price of $2,500 at eBay!
As I predicted, people are ordering the X100VI on speculation at $1,599, and they now are actually reselling used at an average price of $2,500!
Unless you're buying directly from an authorized dealer who got the item directly from Fuji, even if it's never been opened, legally it's still used when you buy from a scalper, regardless of what they claim.
Sad is how well I predict the scalping — so that any of you could have scored a $1,000 profit per camera with just a few clicks — like this guy who brags to have resold 75 of the old X100V!
While not something of which to brag, this is called arbitrage and is perfectly legal.
I pity the fools who get scalped on eBay rather than just ordering their own new X100VI . Even today you're much better off ordering a new one for $1,599 and being patient than getting ripped off by a calm scalper profiting from all the confusion.
The sad thing is the original X100 and each new version has always been like this since 2010, which prompted me to write my How to Get It article so you can get all your gear first and cheap as I do.

Help me help you
I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.
If you find this
as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may
have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.
If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!
If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.
The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.
Thanks for reading!
