I totally scored a deal for Christmas. I mentioned a month ago about the huge sale on beyerdynamic DT 1350 headphones for $119.99 — delivered (regularly $279) which was so good that I ordered a set for myself. For less than many people pay for Chinese-made garbage, I got the real MADE-IN-GERMANY deal. (they're back to the usual prices today as I warned). It turns out they were selling below cost, so I couldn't resist. Santa gave them to me for Christmas yesterday. I have no qualms about gloating about the great deal I got since I shared it with you folks as well. I always order as a gamble since if I hate them I can always return them for cash, so no worries ordering online when I suspect there is a great deal at hand on something I've never tried yet.
The DT1350 really do sell for $175 used at B&H and around $200 on sale at Amazon. The DT1350 are the pro version of my favorite $300 beyerdynamic T51i.
I was right: they sound fantastic. I enjoyed them for several hours nonstop last night, and never heard anything bad to say about them. I usually have plenty to say about headphone imperfections in a lot less time. They are smooth, clean, detailed, and have extraordinarily tight, clean, non-boomy and deep bass. In fact, I've never heard better bass response; all the deepest fundamentals sing cleanly under whatever other bass that other headphones muddle.
The DT1350 are pro headphones designed for precision monitoring while recording live music. Therefore they have more isolation than other headphones (my wife was wondering why I completely ignored her when she tried talking to me) and they also have no leakage — use these in your office and no one else will hear anything.
As pro broadcast and remote recording headphones the DT1350 lack an iPhone remote. The DT1350 also have a big 3.5mm plug with a threaded 1/4" adapter, quite different from the tiny portable plug of the T51i optimized to prevent iPhone damage while out and about.
They come in the same flawless portable case as the T51i: easy to throw in a backpack and go.
The DT1350 are the real MADE-IN-GERMANY deal. Even at full price they sound better than most other headphones at any price, and even compared to my Stax SR-009 have better bass because the DT1350 do a better job of correction (the SR009 are ruler flat, which fails to compensate for the fact that the lowest notes are heard more with our bodies than inside our ear canals). When you get to this level of performance, personal tastes and mood are more important than any absolute sound quality difference.
The choice is easy: for portable iPhone & iPad use, the T51i are the world's best due to the sound, portability and great little plug and remote control. For great sound at a great price, the DT 1350 are also unbeatable. The DT 1350 have slightly different bass response than the T51i. The T51i have a very standard deep bass boost which always sounds great, while the DT 1350 have a flatter, deeper response that isn't quite as boosted, but makes the very deepest bass (32 cycles and below) even more prominent. With the DT 1350, I sometimes hear deeper bass than I ever have; even insane 32-foot 16-cycle Cs of the pipe organ come through quite cleanly.

Turns out they only work on models of camera originally introduced since about 2013. Forget it with older models, you can't even focus these lenses manually — but otherwise the AFP lenses are a huge step forwards.

This deal is so good I bought a set for myself before I posted this! I also bought myself some SanDisk 16 GB class 10 cards on Black Friday sale for $6 each.
The DT1350 really do sell for $175 used at B&H and $227 on sale at Amazon. The DT1350 are the pro version of my favorite $300 beyerdynamic T51i. The difference is that these DT1350 use more earpad pressure to give them more isolation for live recording use, and the extra sealing also lets them have even deeper and smoother bass response — or so my friends tell me. The DT1350 also lack an iPhone remote; they are intended for pro broadcast & recording, and of course are killer for music enjoyment. I'll be reviewing them, but that won't help you when the price goes back up after the sale ends Monday the 28th or Adorama's stock runs out. The DT1350 are the real MADE-IN-GERMANY pro deal as far as I know.

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 FL.
UPDATE: Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 FL.
Mine came in from Adorama the other day, and it's a huge improvement over the old 70-200/2.8 VR II from 2009.
My new 70-200/2.8 FL screams because it's the lightest 70-200/2.8 ever from Nikon, but most importantly because it's the closest-focussing 70-200/2.8 ever, and what is even more important is that it gets much closer then the old VR II. While the rated close-focus distance isn't that much closer, the older 70-200s cheated and weren't really 200mm at their close-focus distances.
Since this new 70-200 FL doesn't cheat on 200mm, it gets what seems like twice as close when you need it to.
Of course autofocus is almost instantaneous, but we expect that from a $2,800 pro lens.
There's also a record four AF-lock buttons around the front of the new 70-200 FL, first seen in 1999 on the 80-200/2.8 AF-S, but sadly removed for cost savings on the old 70-200/2.8 VR II and the new 70-200/4 VR. AF lock buttons let you lock focus on the lens as you track targets running or flying behind obstacles.
Another cool thing is how awesome the zoom feels: it's easy to flick the zoom ring with just a fingertip, even if pointed straight up or down, and it never drifts. Zooming is internal; nothing but the zoom ring moves as you zoom.

It's as simple as that, and camera companies know their PR dollars are better spent influencing the weaker writers on whom those resources would have more effect.
