Zoey

Ryan on Winter Break, 18 February 2019. Canon EOS RP, Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM, Canon 580EX II flash, f/6.3 at 1/180 at ISO 100, Perfectly Clear. bigger or full-resolution or camera-original © JPG file.

I love the Canon EOS RP! As a guy who has to shoot and produce every day I'm all about cameras that get out of my way and let me make great photos, and the EOS RP is the world's best at this. The more I learn about it, the more I like it. The new Fv mode is awesome, and so are its C1 C2 C3 presets that let me snap my kids, and one-click later be back to my settings for landscapes.

The EOS RP is my favorite mirrorless regardless of price. Sony and Fujifilm lack the JPG color quality I demand, leaving Nikon, Canon and iPhone, and when I need fill-flash in daylight that leaves only Nikon and Canon. My Z7 is great, but too darn weird for ergonomics since its U1 U2 U3 only recall half of what I need so the Z7 just doesn't handle as fast as I need. I'm really picky about this; I don't have to time to reset half of everything as my shots change. I LOVE the EOS RP, even if it wasn't the world's least expensive full-frame mirrorless by a huge margin. As far as I'm concerned the only thing Canon took out was the price, they added a much better mode dial than the EOS R so I'm totally stoked with the EOS RP - and my old flashes work marvelously on it as you can see above.

Look at the full-resolution image (shot in MEDIUM resolution and 4:3 crop) on a 55" 4K monitor as I use for my computer; it looks awesome!

How about live, before you press the shutter in-finder RGB histograms and in-finder live lens distortion corrections? Nikon and Sony can't do either of these. Without a real RGB histogram you can't preview your exposure accurately unless you only shoot black-and-white, and without live distortion correction you can't see exactly what will be in your picture, so for those of us who actually shoot rather than just make videos about it, I prefer Canon.

The RP works 100% perfectly with all the light, cheap Canon EF lenses ever made with any EF Adapter, and with its Digital Lens Optimizer makes them work even better today than they ever did when new.

The Nikon Z with an FTZ does’t work (no AF) with most of Nikon’s classic AF and AI-s lenses — which is most of what I own! The more of a Nikon old timer you are, the less reason you have to get the Z, as it won't work with most of our lenses.

After dealing with my weird Z these past months, picking up the RP immediately felt like home. The Canon just works like it should, while the Z gives me too much backtalk.

The EOS RP's new Pan-Focus system works wonders, especially for macro where we never have any depth of field. Shooting these focus-bracketed sequences today I've made over 2,000 shots on a battery charge — and it still reads full!

UPDATED: Nikon vs Canon vs Sony Full-Frame.

Someone has to be kidding! Using Nikon, Canon and Sony on a daily basis, and then using Fujifilm while working with the Fujifilm 200mm f/2 and X-T3, I took out all these cameras and confirmed my sanity: some of them have completely invisible lens mounting indices, and others put them in dumb places. This makes lens changing pretty much a random shot in the dark for many brands.

I thought I was going batty until I looked carefully and tabulated what's going on. The marks are now hidden on many mirrorless brands. Canon DSLR bodies have big red marks at 12 o'clock and big red balls on each lens so I can change lenses in the dark. LEICA M lenses all have big red balls that are easy to see or feel, and all you do is line them up with the big lens release button at 90º and you're done in an instant — even with your eyes closed!

Online experts worry about things that don't matter, but when you shoot all day, every day for a living it really matters if you can get the lenses on and off fast without having to stop what you're doing and concentrate on something that should be easy. Back in the 1970s and 1980s before zooms took over we'd often be changing fixed manual-focus lenses for every shot if we didn't bring a few bodies with a different lenses on each.

Lens Mounting Indices on the camera

Fair to Poor

Nikon Z7

Tiny white ball on black at random location outside lens mount flange.

You can feel for it and almost see it in the dark, but you wouldn't have to if Nikon put it properly at the 12 o'clock position in which case all you'd have to do is get the lens' index to 12 o'clock and you'd be good.

Very Good: Very visible and at 12 o'clock

Canon EOS-R

Big red mark at top of mount easily visible even in this thumbnail photo.

It's easy to see and you don't have to look for it since it's at the 12 o'clock position. Just get the lens' index to 12 o'clock and you're good.

Poor: Invisible and unfeelable

Sony A9

Invisible white dot engraved into random position on silver lens mount. You never can find it and wind up just grinding the lens around until it goes in.

Mounting Indices on the lenses

Fair

Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S

Tiny white ball on black barrel.

Paradoxically this white ball is at the 12 o'clock position on the lens — but only after you've mounted it! This is a design flaw; the mount index should be at 12 o'clock on the camera before we mount, not on the lens after we're done.

It should be a big, bright red ball that really stands out in low light and can be felt in the dark.

Good

Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS

Big red mark on the silver part of the lens' mount. It's easily visible, but it's not raised so you can't feel for it in the dark.

It should be a raised ball, but so long as you can see it and bring it to 12 o'clock on the camera, you're good.

Poor

Sony 24-105mm G

Tiny white ball at random place.

It's hard to see in any light, but you can feel for it.

It should be bigger and bright red.

Fuji makes no full-frame cameras right now so they're not on my Full-Frame Comparison, but their mounting system is almost as bad as Sony: hidden lens release button between mount and grip, red index mark on camera mount in random place, and lens indices are just a small red mark that can't be felt.

NEW: Fujifilm X-T30. Also comes as a kit with 15-45mm lens or with an 18-55mm lens. Also at Adorama as body-only, kit with 15-45mm or kit with 18-55mm.

More about the Fujifilm X-T30, and more here, too.

More data coming today; there's too much coming out new today. I've spent all night working on these hands-on articles below:

Canon EOS RP

Canon EOS RP and Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.

NEW: Canon EOS RP Hands-On Review!

My favorite mirrorless camera: full frame for just $1,299!

NEW: Canon EOS RP User's Guide!!

Hands-on guide to how to make the EOS RP sing.

NEW: Canon EOS RP vs EOS R!!!

Whoo hoo! It turns out the new EOS RP feels and shoots the same and takes pictures at least as good as last year's EOS R (better if you use automatic focus-stacking for infinite depth-of-field and ultrasharp macro shots like never before), and the EOS RP costs $1,000 less!

NEW: Six Full-Frame Mirrorless lenses!

Canon has gone INSANE!

It took Sony five years to develop the three basic f/2.8 pro zoom lenses for full-frame, and they are big, heavy old-style beasts no one likes carrying. People buy the Sony GM lenses, and then ask "So why did I go mirrorless if it's at least as heavy as my DSLR system after I bought all the same lenses?"

Canon will have these out later this year, and they are small and light as we expect from mirrorless! Canon will have its full-frame system ready for the pro big time five times faster than Sony:

Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L

Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM.

NEW: Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM.

Ultra-ultrawide stabilized f/2.8 zoom , and takes regular 82mm screw-in filters!

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM.

NEW: Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM.

Standard pro midrange zoom. Of course Canon had an RF 28-70mm f/2.0 ultrapro zoom last year.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L

Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

NEW: Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.

I've seen the mock-up of this lens, and it's only about half as long as a DSLR 70-200/2.8.

Canon RF 24-240mm f/2.8 L

Canon RF 24-240mm f/4~6.3 IS USM.

NEW: Canon RF 24-240mm IS USM.

A lightweight, reasonably priced do-everything stabilized lens, the likes of which Canon has never had for full-frame.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM.

NEW: Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM.

Nikon or Sony have never made an f/1.2 autofocus lens, and this must be like the tenth from Canon. Canon made the world's fastest 50/1.0 back in the 1980s, which still works on their mirrorless cameras today, and no other maker has every caught up. If you need fast autofocus lenses, you need Canon.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM DS

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS.

NEW: Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS.

What? A second 85/1.2? This 85 DX is no BS: it means "Defocus Smoothing" which means this is an ultra-bokeh (soft, smooth background) lens. It's ultra-ultra sharp, and the defocussed parts are extra smooth and creamy. it's images will look three dimensional because of the huge contrast between sharp subject and soft background.

What, no RF 100-400mm or RF 300mm f/2.8? There's always 2020 — and my EF 100-400 L and EF 300/2.8L have worked brilliantly since last year with my EF adapter on the EOS R, so who cares?

11 February 2019, Monday

NEW: Polaroid POP cameras.

These are fun little digital cameras with built-in printers. These are 20MP cameras that use microSD cards and have WiFi and big touch screens, and also can spit out little prints. Kids young and old love them!

NEW: Panasonic S1R Full-Frame at Adorama, at Amazon and at B&H.

I've been on other projects as you'll soon see, and I hear what really stands out about these new Panasonics is their big, ultrasharp finders with big, round rear eyepieces.

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
