Canon 1DX Mark III

Canon 1DX Mark III with Canon EF 50mm f/1L USM.

NEW: Canon 1DX Mark III High-ISO Sample Image Files.

As expected, the 1DX Mark III performs marvelously, but also as expected, the crazy ISO 409,600 (H2) and ISO 812,900 (H3) speeds look horrible; just like the Nikon D5 and D6, those speeds are put in there for marketing the camera; the results at ISO 812,900 (H3) are completely horrible.

15 September 2020, Tuesday

NEW: Sony A7c. Also at Adorama and at Crutchfield in black and at Crutchfield in silver.

The A7c is a slightly smaller full-frame 24MP camera.

While Sony claims it's "the world's lightest," at 18.0 oz. (509g), it's heavier than the Canon EOS RP which weighs only 17.0 oz. (481g) with battery and SD card. The EOS RP only costs half as much and has more resolution and much better ergonomics. The A7c does have double the frame rate of the RP; the RP isn't for action.

Now that we have Canon and Nikon in full-frame mirrorless, I cringe thinking about how uncomfortable are Sony's hard, square and boxy bodies and their horrible menu systems.

Thank goodness it's not 2013 anymore; at least in cameras, 2020 has been a stupendous year, with Canon's brilliant new lenses (85 macro, 100-500mm, 600mm and 800mm) and EOS R5 and R6 cameras leaving the rest in the dust in just the past few months. (See also Nikon vs Canon vs Sony Full-Frame Mirrorless.)

Sony also claims their boring 28-60mm lens is the "world's smallest and lightest full-frame E-mount lens," which it is, but the just-as-boring Nikon Z 24-50mm is full frame and smaller, lighter and less expensive. Sony added the weasel word "E-mount" to let them claim that.

The A7c is a little smaller, but oh how I no longer look forward to having to hold any Sony body for any length of time. The sharp corners and weird, square angles for controls make them look handsome, but that hurts my hands after any length of time. Canon and Nikon do much better jobs of angling controls to where our fingers go naturally.

A7c: 2.8 x 4.9 x 2.4" (71.1 x 124 x 59.7 mm) HWD

RP: 3.35 × 5.22 × 2.76" (85.0 × 132.5 × 70.0 mm) HWD.

Even though the A7c is twice as expensive, short two megapixels and heavier than the RP — and Sony still has nothing to compete with the EOS R5 and R6 (the A9 II is ergonomically inferior and costs almost double the R6)— it's nice to hear that Sony's still there. Nikon and Sony have been defeatedly silent for months with nothing even close to the EOS R5 or R6.

I'd spend any new camera money expanding into Canon rather than on other brands. Canon pulled ahead two years ago in mirrorless, and in 2020 has jumped so far ahead of the others it makes no sense to go any other way moving forward — to me, anyway.

I expect my Nikon Z5 to arrive today, and at $400 less than the A7c, I expect will also be a better camera — but that's over 50 years of experience letting me know what actually matters. See also What Makes a Great Camera, which I wrote in 2007 and still applies even more today.

I'm working on a full report of the A7c; stay tuned later today, and of course if you're all in on Sony, the A7c is a great little camera — just that I'd rather grab my RP or R5 than anything Sony.

11 September 2020, Friday

NEW: EOS R5 Firmware 1.1.1.

NEW: EOS R6 Firmware 1.1.1.

What's new? Six stops of (claimed) stabilization with the RF 100-500mm lens, and other details you can read at Canon's pages above.

I've already tested the stabilization performance today of the RF 100-500mm lens on the EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS RP with the latest firmware, and guess what: as I expected, the in-body stabilization of the EOS R5 and EOS R6 adds no additional stabilization performance over the performance of the lens alone on the unstabilized EOS RP.

With stabilized lenses, IBIS adds nothing. Sometimes it's a little better, and just as many times it's a little worse than just using an unstabilized camera. See the science for yourself. I feel like Consumer Reports, as usual.

04 September 2020, Friday

Fuji 50mm f/1

Fujinon XF 50mm f/1 R WR.

NEW: Fuji XF 50mm f/1.0 Review.

Fuji's first f/1.0 lens, but it's only for their APS-C cameras. No, it's not full-frame, but it's not $4,000 like the Canon EF 50mm f/1.0 L, either. The Fuji 50/1 is only $1,499.95.

I suspect someone at Fuji's ears were burning with all that's going on at Canon. At least someone else is paying attention to advancing photography in the 2020s and not sitting on whatever they did the last decade.

Still no cameras or lenses from Sony or Nikon to compare to an autofocus 50/1 or a 20 FPS 45MP camera; their fastest AF lenses are only f/1.4, like it's still 1986. Hey Nikon: where's my new CD player — and as you know, Canon's 50mm f/1 has been out since 1989. The other guys are still over 30 years behind the times. I've been covering cameras for a couple of decades here, and it's uncanny for how long Sony has sat around empty-handed with nothing at 20 FPS with more than 24MP, and their higher-resolution cameras only run at 10 FPS, and Nikon has nada here. Nikon and Canon used to be neck and neck within a week of each other with new announcements. Oh well, Zzzzz on them.

NEW: B&H's Labor-Day Sale.

If I'm hearing that a COVID vaccine is on-track for fall, that means a big holiday season with us all stocking up on gear to shoot when we're finally out of lock-down.

This said, as you can see I'm getting my camera gear now so it's not like trying to buy toilet paper was back in March.

NEW: Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS Review.

Unlike every other brand's big, fat bloated 70-200/2.8s, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS is small, light, ultra sharp and focuses faster than my own eyes. It's also the world's closest-focussing 70-200 at 200mm!

It's so light I can shoot one-handed if I want:

Canon EOS R Series Manual-Focus Override

I finally figured out how to get part-time manual-focus override on Canon's EOS R series:

By default, there is no always-responsive instant manual-focus override as we take for granted in our DSLRs.

EOS R cameras need a menu setting changed for manual-focus override, otherwise the focus ring is always ignored in AF.

Find the "Lens electronic AF" option in your AF menu (AF 4 in EOS R5 or CAMERA 8 in EOS RP), and set it to either "One‑Shot‑>enabled" or "One‑Shot‑>enabled (magnify)."

Now manual focus override works if you turn the ring while continuing to hold the shutter halfway, but only after focus locks in ONE SHOT.

Canon should have it set this way by default, but they don't. No big deal now that I figured it out.

How did I figure this out after two years? Easy, I finally called (800) OK-CANON and the first guy who picked up the phone explained this to me.

Canon also explained that yes, as my tests confirm, while the EOS R5's in-body sensor-shift stabilization adds a bit when used with unstabilized lenses, in actual use, it adds no significant extra stabilization when used with IS lenses. I've tried it with Firmware 1.1.0, and no change.

The fellow with whom I spoke hoped that upcoming firmware might make this better; who knows. Canon's in-lens stabilization is the best I've tested; I've found that IBIS is more for marketing to non-full time shooters than a feature that does anything of real value. Ditto in Sony; IBIS doen't do much other than add marketing points to consumers if you already have stabilized lenses, and IBIS can't do well with ultrawides or long teles.

Bravo Canon! I can't get straight answers like this from any other brand. Thank you!

28 August 2020, Friday

NEW: Canon EOS R5 Firmware 1.1.0.

It addresses the previous 4K and 8K thermal problems. I only shoot stills, and my R5 rocks!

Experienced full-time career pros don't worry about a camera's "Dynamic Range," but consumers worry themselves sick over it — even though it doesn't matter. A great camera can't save your photos from bad lighting, plain and simple.

This said, I'm amazed at what range I get, especially shooting NORMAL JPGs as I always shoot. Here's a shot made directly into the morning desert sun today, and not only can I see detail in the clouds, I even can see detail in the trunks of the palm trees — that I couldn't see with my naked eyes staring into the brilliant morning sun!

Canon EOS R5 Sample Image File

Staring into the Morning Sun, 7:34 AM, 28 August 2020. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS at 70mm at f/4 at 1/4,000 at Auto ISO 100 (LV 16.0), Perfectly Clear. bigger or full-resolution JPG file.

Remember that at f/4 that the big trunk on the left isn't in focus, and I wasn't using any of the HDR or Highlight Priority modes; just plain old NORMAL JPG as I always shoot.

23 August 2020, Sunday

Just flew in at ISO 8,000

A grab shot from my Canon EOS R5 and Canon RF 24-240mm IS, by window light at ISO 8,000:

Canon EOS R5 Sample Image File

Macaw by Window Light, 11:31 AM, 23 August 2020. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 24-240mm IS at 218mm at f/6.3 at 1/250 at Auto ISO 8,000, +1 stop exposure compensation (LV 7.0), Perfectly Clear. bigger or camera-original © JPG file.

This was very much a grab shot as I walked into a bird store. I got busted within seconds as they said "no pictures, Mack!" Key is you always have to be ready to shoot so you get your shot rather than waste your time fiddling since you never know how much time you have. Of course diplomacy will get me more photos some other day; their concern has been weirdos taking pictures and later complaining about things.

With everyone upgrading to Canon, does Sony introduce a 60MP version of the A9 II to compete? Nooooo; instead they offer a 10% discount on last-decade's products instead:

The A9II, A7R IV, Z7, Z6, Z50 and all those all came out back in the 2010s, while the EOS R5, R6 and these new lenses from Canon are just the tip of 2020s innovations expressly for mirrorless, rather than just copying the same-old, same-old lenses from DSLR days.

Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM

Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM DO.

NEW: Canon RF 600mm f/11 Review.

I'm loving all the new EOS-R system parts. The EOS R5 is knocking it out of the park; I've totally forgotten about other makers and their crappy menus and ergonomics and second-rate color. The big dog is finally back in town. Canon has been the #1 selling camera brand since the 1990s when they overtook Nikon. It's not 2013 anymore back when the A7 was cool as the first modern mirrorless full-frame.

Now that it's 2020 the real camera makers have taken full-frame mirrorless back and I'm loving it! 20 FPS at 45 MP? Not from anyone else, and more importantly, the pictures have better colors than Sony or Fuji and way better ergonomics and faster camera handling than any other brand.

I have more new Canon gear in my hands; more real reviews coming all week.

Bravo Canon!

14 August 2020, Friday

My EOS R5 is superb for tracking motion and wildlife. This roadrunner was banging at my windows, and my R5 just tracked and kept his eyes in focus all by itself with no need for me to move any focus points. It just found the eyes, grabbed them and tracked them as he jumped all over:

Canon EOS R5 Sample Image File

Visiting Roadrunner (shot through window), 10:55 AM, 13 August 2020. Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 24-240mm IS at 183mm at f/7.1 at 1/200 at Auto ISO 1,600 (LV 9¼), Canon 580 EX II flash, Perfectly Clear. bigger, full 45MP resolution or camera-original © JPG file.

Sharp?

Canon EOS R5 Sample Image File

1,200×900 pixel (6.8× magnification) crop from above. bigger, full 45MP resolution or camera-original © JPG file.

If this 1,200 × 900 pixel crop is about 3" (7.5cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at a large 14 × 21″ (35 × 55 cm) at this same high magnification.

If this 1,200 × 900 pixel crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at a huge 27½ × 41¼″ (2¼ × 3½ feet or 70 × 105 cm) at this same high magnification.

If this 1,200 × 900 pixel crop is about 12" (30cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at a mammoth 55 × 82½″ (4½ × 7 feet or 1.4 × 2.1 meters) at this same extremely high magnification!

The R5's flash performance is great!

Even more fun and something many mirrorless cameras (like Fuji) can't handle, is that the R5 works great at high continuous frame rates with flash. Of course it only works with the regular mechanical shutter, but it does work at up to 12 FPS without a hiccup if your flash can keep up.

With my Canon 580 EX II flash I can blast away at Continuous High+ at 12 FPS and it just goes. That's how I snapped this roadrunner; so long as your flash recycles fast enough (hint: stay close enough), the system just goes. No settings are needed, just turn on the flash and fire away.

Bravo!

It works! I can easily hand-hold the Canon RF 800mm IS STM with Canon RF 2× extender combination (1,600mm)!

In the case below I used a tripod so I could get a lower ISO — but you have to be careful because without an astronomical clock drive to track the motion of the moon across the sky, the magnification is so great with this combination that you could see it move across the finder:

Canon EOS R5 Sample Image File

The Moon, 7:23 AM, 08 August 2020. Uncropped full-frame image from Canon EOS R5, Canon RF 800mm IS STM with Canon RF 2× extender (makes it a 1,600mm lens), f/22 at 1/60 at ISO 200 (LV 14.0), Perfectly Clear. bigger, full 45MP resolution or camera-original © JPG file.

It's as good overall as Sony's A9 II, but has much more fine detail at every ISO. Bravo Canon!

And oh yes - the Canon EOS system includes the world's fastest autofocus lens ever, and it works great on my R5. Try that, Nikon, LEICA, Fuji or Sony! Their systems all stop at f/1.4! (the f/0.95 lenses are only manual focus, and Canon invented the world's first f/0.95 lens back in 1962!)

Fast fact: the EOS R5 is now the world's highest pixel-rate camera, at 900 megapixels per second (45 MP × 20 FPS with tracking autofocus and exposure). The previous leader was the Fuji GFX 100, at 510 MP/s (102 MP × 5 FPS, and I don't think it did very well tracking autofocus, no way!).

Nikon Z5

Nikon Z5 and Nikon Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3.

NEW: Nikon Z5 Review.

I'm digging the Z5: dual SD slots and the better mode dial of the Z50. Looks like it addresses my beefs with the weird, expensive cards and dumpy ergonomics of the old Z7 and Z6, hooray!

Comet Neowise

The Comet Neowise. 9:09 PM, Thursday, 16 July 2020. Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max, 4.25mm (26mm equivalent) ultra-wide camera at f/1.8 at 1 second handheld at Auto ISO 3,200, automatic Night Mode (LV -3.3). bigger.

When I was a kid, astrophotography was a drag. I'd attach my Minolta SR-1 (self-portrait from 1974 at age 12) to the back of my 60mm × 700mm Tasco (unguided altazimuth) telescope, make a long exposure, and a week later get nothing back but blank film.

This time, I pointed my old Bushnell Spacemaster II 25× 60mm spotting scope at the comet after I found it with my LEICA TRINOVID 10 × 50 BN binoculars, then as a goof, held my iPhone 11 Pro Max behind the scope in the air as it made a magic, automatic time-sliced and motion-compensated exposure.

Holy, cow, it worked! I just held it, and it made a sharp exposure even though my hands were moving Shot in the native Apple Camera app,

It took longer to write this than it did to shoot it.

New: Sony A7S III.

Well, not really. Sony's not telling us anything other than it's a new version of the A7SII.

Neu: LEICA M10-R.

Now with 40 MP, the M10-R is a tool for superior artists with superior vision.

LEICA M10-R

LEICA M10-R und APO-SUMMICRON-M 50mm f/2.

LEICA M10-R

LEICA M10-R und SUMMICRON-M 35mm f/1.4.

LEICA M10-R

LEICA M10-R.

You people know who you are; for the rest of us the EOS R5 is the way to go for hyper resolution mirrorless (better than Sony or Nikon), and personally I still prefer the EOS RP for its superior ergonomics. Pixel Dumping tells us that so long as you have at least about 6 megapixels, you have enough for anything — but LEICA has always been about so much more than just pictures.

The LEICA is like the woman you marry: your soul just knows it's right. It's not about spreadsheets or mathematical analysis; you follow your gut on something as pivotal as your life decision to take the final step up to LEICA.

Order now and you should have yours around the end of the month.

World's Fastest AF Mirrorless

Canon EF 50mm f/1.0 L on EOS RP

Canon EF 50mm f/1.0 L on EOS RP. bigger.

Just so you don't forget, the world's fastest autofocus lens that works on a mirrorless camera is the extraordinary Canon EF 50mm f/1.0 L, which works flawlessly with any of Canon's EF to RF adapters on any of Canon's EOS-R series of full-frame mirrorless cameras.

While there are showboat lenses like Leica's copy of Canon's 50mm f/0.95 from 1961 and Nikon's more recent f/0.95 copy, those lenses are manual-focus-only, so they'd be awesome if this were 1948 — but it's 2020.

Today, the only system with autofocus lenses faster than f/1.4 is Canon, who make quite a few new f/1.2 lenses today, and the 50/1.0 is always available used if you know How to Win at eBay.

For those of you following the EOS RP, I just added more EOS RP High ISO Sample Images.

For EOS R5.

NEW: Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM.

A brilliant little lens.

NEW: Canon RF 100-500mm L IS.

You know you want it. With the EOR-R series, f/7.1 lenses work brilliantly.

NEW: Canon RF 600mm IS STM.

NEW: Canon RF 800mm IS STM.

These two are the most innovative products announced today. Many of you, especially those of you who remember DSLRs whose finders would go dark and couldn't focus with slow lenses, may not realize how incredibly well the EOS-R system works with slow lenses and even stacked teleconverters.

These two lenses are tiny for their focal lengths. They use Fresnel lenses (a.k.a. DO, Diffractive Optics) and even collapse for storage! Canon thought out of the box and gave birders and others two long lenses that will work brilliantly on the EOS-R system that never could have been done on SLRs or DSLRs. Bravo, Canon!

NEW: Canon RF 1.4× extender.

NEW: Canon RF 2× extender.

NEW: Canon LP-E6NH battery.

How to Photograph Fireworks

Fireworks!!! (Nikon D800E, Nikon 24mm f/1.4 G, program auto gave f/1.4 at 1/30 at Auto ISO 6,400, Matrix meter, autofocuses once on Ryan then set to MANUAL focus to hold, VIVID Picture Control at +3 Saturation, A3 M1 AWB.)

How to Photograph Fireworks.

Like reading "The Night Before Christmas" every Christmas Eve, it's always a great lesson in taking chances when things stink and knowing when it's time to say "screw you guys:" give a quick read of the Declaration of Independence.

Read it. It's a brilliantly written piece where some very educated guys politely laid out line-by-line all the crap they had to endure, how they had asked for help in every case ("In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms"), and how they were repeatedly told to get lost ("Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury"), so therefore they had tried their best and "are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown."

It's only a few pages, but laid out the foundation upon which our forefathers took a huge risk with war and hardship rather than just taking the easy way out of putting up with a bad situation ("Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed"), and by taking that risk ultimately created the greatest and most productive society ever known in all the history of the Earth.

You have to be willing to lose in order to win. You win more often than you'd think, but you lose all the chances you don't take. Our founding fathers took a huge chance telling the world's mightiest military empire to go stuff themselves, and we, a bunch of rag-tag hillbillies, won! We didn't realize that eventually we were more trouble to the British than they thought we were worth, so they gave up on on 19 October 1781 and Great Britain formally recognized the independence of the United States in the Treaty of Paris on 03 September 1783. Took them almost seven years, ha!.

Sony ZV-1

NEW: Sony ZV-1. Also at Adorama.

Also there's a Sony Vlogger tripod & accessory kit, and a kit with the camera and accessories.

Sony pitches this as "great for Vloggers."

Don't let me rain on your parade if this camera is for you, but I find I can't beat my iPhone for Vlogging. Heck, I can broadcast live for hours direct from my iPhone under its own battery power in the YouTube app, and I doubt I'd get the quality - and certainly not be able to broadcast live - from this foreign-designed Sony camera with its laughably tiny 3" screen; heck; my kid's Nintendo video games have much larger screens - and you hold games closer than a Vlogging camera. The Sony 3" screen isn't 16:9 or wide like the iPhone, so it's like a 2.5" equivalent with black bars top and bottom with video; but what do I know?

iPhone 11 Pro Max wins again; it has better pictures as it has magic video auto-HDR that tames real-world lighting.

B&H has a more even-keel analysis of the ZV-1.

Fuji X-T200

Fujifilm X-T200 and Fujinon XC 35mm f/2.

NEW: Fujifilm X-T200 Review.

In stark contrast to the magnificent Canon 90D I reviewed on Tuesday, the X-T200 is the worst camera I've reviewed since the original Nikon D3000 of 2009. The X-T200 is easy to hate because it has Fuji's atrocious menu system, not simplified for the basic user for whom this camera is intended, and to make things worse, it's loaded with unmarked mystery dials and buttons sure to flummox anyone who doesn't shoot it every day. If you only shoot once a week, forget figuring out this camera. Also like the original D3000, it lacks the processing power to handle quickly; always taking a bit longer than it should to respond to inputs.

Get the Sony A6100 for the same price (get it as a kit with the 16-50mm PZ) or pay a little more for the superior Fuji X-T30 or Nikon Z50. If you want a fantastic camera at an even lower price, get a superb DSLR like the Nikon D3500 which is a way better camera for most people than the X-T200.

Unlike digital cameras which go obsolete every few years, a good tripod lasts a lifetime. Don't skimp.

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
