Loving my X100V

Snap from last night:

Porsche Panamera Turbo

Porsche Panamera Turbo (with bugs on bumper), 5:24 PM, 02 March 2020. Fuji X100V, 50mm digital televconverter mode, flash ON, f/3.2 at 1/125 at Auto ISO 320 (LV 8.0), 200% Auto Dynamic Range, Perfectly Clear. bigger or camera-original © 5.8 MB LARGE NORMAL JPG file.

The digital teleconverter works great; just turn the lens ring and voilà!, you can get 50mm and 70mm equivalent lenses. In this case I used the 50mm equivalent digitally converted lens.

I LOVE the fill flash! This is shooting into the sun for atmospheric lighting effect, and without the fill flash the car would just be a shadow.

Magenta flower backlit on green

Sofie, 12:27 PM, 29 February 2020. Fuji X100V, flash ON, f/5.6 at 1/550 at Auto ISO 320 (LV 12.4), 200% Auto Dynamic Range, Perfectly Clear. bigger or camera-original © 10 MB LARGE NORMAL JPG file.

YES! My Fujifilm X100V has fantastic fill-flash performance with its built-in flash. In this case the light looks perfect (without flash Sofie's face would have been in compete shadow with no catchlight in her eye), and the ultrafast sync speed of the X100V's leaf shutter let the camera shoot at 1/550 with ease — something no interchangeable lens digital camera can do.

Hallelujah! It's made with pride domestically.

Fujifilm X100V Review.

SMART: Nikon D780.

More good news: My D780 fully saves and recalls all camera settings to and from a memory card, and these files can be saved and shared on your computer and I share mine online. Better than mirrorless rubbish like the defective Nikon Z6, Z7 and Sony A7R Mk IV, the D780 recalls all the contents your U1 and U2 modes.

YES!!! Not everything is circling the big brown drain like the mirrorless Z6, Z7 and Sony A7R Mk IV, all of which erase the contents of their memory modes when you recall from a card, making this feature nearly useless in those half-finished mirrorless fiascoes!

UPDATED: Do You Need 2 Cards?

I first wrote this on the eve of the Nikon Z6 and Z7, which still sadly only have one slot.

I just updated it.

Just in from my X100V:

Sun and many clouds

Sun and Clouds, 8:52 AM, 28 February 2020. Fuji X100V at f/14 at 1/5,800 at Auto ISO 640 with -1⅓ stops exposure compensation (LV 17.5), 400% Dynamic Range, Perfectly Clear. bigger or camera-original © 6.7 MB JPG file.

I used -1⅓ stops exposure compensation and 400% dynamic range to hold detail in everything from the sun to the clouds and God beams.

Z Firmware Flaw

Oh well. I put the new version 3.00 firmware in my Nikon Z7, and its autofocus system in Auto-Area AF still has the same flaw where it ignores a closer subject in the middle of the frame if it's already focused on something in the background.

This flaw drives me up the wall; when I have a closer subject which my Z7 is ignoring I have to turn the manual focus ring or otherwise get the focus about right on my subject, and only then will the AF system bring it in to perfect focus. Otherwise it's so dumb that it simply auto-deselects the AF areas that represent the correct subject in the middle of the frame and stays Hell-bent on the wrong ones focussed on the background!

I haven't tried it on a group to see if Nikon's fixed the fatal flaw where the face ID system isn't smart enough to focus on the most important face as my iPhone and X100F and every other camera does perfectly.

Good news is my Fringer Canon to Nikon AF, IS & VR adapter continues to work great. No, it doesn't fix the problems basic to the Z AF system, but it does make all my classic & current Canon lenses work better than my classic Nikon lenses do on the FTZ!

Hrpmh!

NEW: Major Nikon Z Firmware Updates:

Z7 firmware update, version 3.00.

Z6 firmware update, version 3.00.

Version 3.00 adds:

  • Animal-Detection AF: The Nikon Z 7 and Z 6 will now recognize the eyes and faces of dogs and cats. When multiple animal faces or eyes are detected, photographers can use the camera’s left and right indicators to select the face or eye that the camera focuses on. When recording videos, face detection will be enabled. What we really need is for the camera to determine the most important face and focus on it automatically without needing to touch the left-right control; we'll see what happens.
  • Better Subject-Tracking AF: Subject tracking for still shooting in AF-C mode has been made more like DSLR 3D tracking. To do this, hold the AF-ON button or half-press the shutter. Tracking stops when you take your finger off the button, and the camera switches back to the original focus point before subject tracking began. Additionally, the transition from the Auto-area AF display to the subject selection display can be assigned to a custom control button.
  • Support for CFexpress memory cards: In addition to Sony CFexpress memory cards, some Type B CFexpress cards from ProGrade Digital and Lexar will also work.

Z50 firmware update, version 1.10.

Version 1.10 adds:

  • Better Movie AF for Self-portraits: This locks focus at AF-F mode, allowing the camera to better maintain focus on a user’s face while recording video.

12 February 2020, Wednesday

Nikon D6

Nikon D6 and 24-70mm f/2.8 VR.

NEW: Nikon D6 Review.

I'm not going to say how amused I am that for about the past ten years or more that Nikon's newest top pro camera always duplicates the frame rate of Canon's previous pro camera. With the D6, Nikon finally catches up to Canon's outgoing 1DX Mk II. If you want the 16 FPS of the new 1DX III you'll have to wait for Nikon's D7 expected in 2024.

Frame rate is everything for pro news and sports cameras.

Other than my initial mirth at Nikon exactly meeting my expectations of finally having something competitive to Canon's old 1DX Mk II, if you're a Nikon pro I'm sure you already have two on order. I know I'm ordering mine as soon as I'm done writing it up here.

What's new is a new AF system and of course 14 FPS rather than just 12 FPS, and 31 more bullet points.

NEW: Nikon Z 24-200mm       also at Adorama.

I'll be updating this throughout the day.

NEW: Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8       also at Adorama.

I'll be updating this throughout the day.

This is a Z-native version of my great 20mm f/1.8G I've loved so much since it came out in 2014 for my DSLRs.

Neither Canon nor Sony nor Fujifilm have anything like it. 20mm is the ideal ultrawide focal length, worlds better than 24mm.

A 20/1.8 is one of my favorite lenses. It's ideal for Milky Way, low-light city shots and close-in action and motion in low light:

Ryan flies a Fairchild C-119

Ryan flies a Fairchild C-119 "Flying Boxcar," 28 November 2014, Friday. Nikon D810, Nikon 20mm f/1.8, f/1.8 at 1/125 at Auto ISO 1,100, Perfectly Clear. bigger or camera-original file to explore on your computer.

Radio City Music Hall blurred action shot at night, New York City

Radio City Music Hall shot from a moving taxi, New York City, 06 October 2014. D750, 20mm f/1.8, f/2.2 at 1/20 at Auto ISO 100, hand-held, Perfectly Clear. bigger.

The 20/1.8 is so fast that we can shoot it out moving taxi windows at night at ISO 100 for ultra-clean professional images.

West 30th Street looking west at night, New York City

West 30th Street looking west at night, New York City, 06 October 2014. D750 in HDR mode, 20mm f/1.8, f/2.8 at 5 seconds at ISO 400, hand-held against tinted hotel window, Perfectly Clear. Full-resolution (13 MB JPG).

Nikon D780

D780 with Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2.

NEW: More Nikon D780 Sample Images from the past couple of days.

I also added my studio shots of my D780 to its review, like this Op-Art montage with 60 years of compatible lenses, leaving the crappy FTZ adapter and Nikon mirrorless in the dust:

Nikon D780

With Nikon 50mm f/1.4 G (2008-today).

Nikon D780

With Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-D (1986-today).

Nikon D780

With Noct-NIKKOR 58mm f/1.2 AI-s (1977-1997).

Nikon D780

With AI'd Nikon F 5.8 cm f/1.4(1959-1962).

Did you know the FTZ doesn't work properly with three out of these four lenses? It only autofocuses with one of the lenses, and only records or knows set aperture with two of these lenses. Even if I set my Z7's Non-CPU Lens Data, my Z7 still doesn't record the focal length or shooting aperture in its EXIF data, as my D780 does flawlessly.

I'm loving my D780 and its always flawless color; these are exactly the colors that come right out of my D780 as deliverable JPGs, no editing, no RAW files or other dilly-dallying to get between delivering my images and getting on to the next job:

The Fuji X100V is now orderable at Amazon in silver and at Amazon in black. Of course it's been at Adorama in silver, at Adorama in black, at B&H in silver and at B&H in black all along.

You need to have it on order now if you want to get it when it first comes out.

It was the original X100 which was such a hot product back in 2010 that no one could get it — yet I had mine — so when someone in public asked me "hey, how'd you get your X100 so fast" inspired me to write How to Get It.

Olympus 35 SP.

UPDATED: Olypmus 35 SP.

I updated the graphics to higher resolution and page size, and updated the historical price information. I hadn't realized that the used resale price has doubled since I got mine in 2013. As I foretold, the best 35mm cameras only go up in value.

I also added a trick to get the self-timer to work in Program (AA) mode.

SALE: Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR FL just $2,197 at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H and at Crutchfield.

UPDATED: Nikon 70-200/2.8 FL Price History.

While updating my Nikon 70-200/2.8 Price History I noticed that the price has dropped $650 from two weeks ago when I last checked the price. Nikon jacked-up the 70-200/2.8 FL price when the 70-200/2.8 Z came out to make the Z lens look like less of a rip-off. The Z lens is still $2,597 at Adorama, at Amazon, at B&H and at Crutchfield. Sneaky, but not sneaky enough now that I publish permanent records of pricing.

Try one, of anything, for 30 days, worry free!

Nikon just sent out junk mail about a 30-day trial on the Z50.

What makes me laugh is that everything you get from Adorama, Amazon or B&H comes with a great worry-free, no-backtalk trial period. If you don't love it, send it back for a full cash refund with no dirty looks within 30 days.

This is why I've used Adorama and B&H since the 1970s: because although it was only 7 days back then, there's no way you can tell how much you like or dislike something until you try it in your own environment with your own other gear. This is one of the many reasons I haven't bought at retail for over 40 years.

If 30 days isn't enough, everything you get at Crutchfield has a sixty-day full money-back return period!

Unless you're silly enough to buy at retail, get yours at Adorama, Amazon, B&H or Crutchfield and you never have to worry about reading reviews or wondering how well it will work — for you. Order, try it yourself, and be happy!

Great new adapter lets me use my Canon EF lenses with often better results on my Nikon Z cameras than Nikon's own lenses give on Nikon's crappy FTZ adapter!

Nikon Z7

Nikon Z7 and Z 24-70mm f/4 S.

NEW: Nikon Z7 Video Performance.

OLD: Nikon Z7 Historical Price Tracker.

Did you know that my reviews track new and used prices ever since a camera was first introduced?

In this case, the Z7's current and past prices, as well as its accessories, change price about once a month?

I record these in perfect detail for every camera I've reviewed. For instance, here's the D850's price for the past 2½ years.

Just look under "Price" under "Specifications" and I log it all for you to see in each review.

I update these when I go back into each review over time, but especially for a hot camera like the Z7 I'm in there adding more and updating all the time — like the new section on the Z7's video performance I just added today.

Camera makers don't want you to have this power, but it lets us know when a deal is a deal.

One of the many reasons prices fluctuate, in addition to the always welcome price erosion as the months and years move on, is the Yen/Dollar exchange rate. This always goes up and down, and camera prices follow suit as our money flows back to Japan.

Nikon D780

Nikon D780 and 58mm Noct-NIKKOR f/1.2 AI-s.

NEW: Nikon D780.

I added a lot to yesterday's draft. I especially like my new Compared and Recommendations sections.

The D780 offers a great combination of mirrorless video and Live-View capabilities and the superior autofocus of a DSLR for action. The D780 is what you get when the Z6 and D750 have a baby; it's got the best features of both — except the D780 has no built-in flash.

Fringer Canon EF to Nikon Z Adapter

Fringer Canon EF to Nikon Z Adapter.

NEW: Canon EF to Nikon Z Adapter - with full AF, IS & VR!

I have one and it works great. With this Fringer adapter my Canon lenses lenses work on Nikon Z like they're native lenses. This Fringer adapter on Nikon Z works much better than the Metabones does on Sony.

Review coming, but that's all you need to know, unlike other adapters, my lenses all feel like they're native with none of the quirks of other adapters. They focus at least as fast as Nikon's own Z lenses do. Bravo!

The funny thing is that with this adapter all my Canon AF lenses work on Nikon Z, while my Nikon AF and AF-D lenses don't autofocus on my Nikon Z with the awful FTZ! Makes me wonder about Nikon.

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
