Sony Zeiss FE 35mm f/1.4

Sony ZEISS Distagon T✻ FE 35mm f/1.4.

$600 Off: Sony ZEISS Distagon T✻ FE 35mm f/1.4: $998!!!

Yes, there's a newer Non-Zeiss Sony FE 35/1.4 GM that's not shipping yet, and this ZEISS version from 2014 is still superb — and you can buy it today for huge savings.

New: Viltrox Full-Frame 85mm f/1.8 autofocus for Nikon Z: $399, for Sony and for Fuji.

I haven't tried it yet, but this is an interesting new lens as it has autofocus, an all-metal body and costs one-half what the Nikon Z 85mm f/1.8 does. You can get it at Amazon for Nikon Z, for Sony and for Fuji or from Pergear for Nikon, for Sony and for Fuji.

Canon EL-1 Flash

Canon EL-1 Speedlite Flash.

New: Canon EL-1 Flash Review.

It's $1,099, but it includes a new rechargeable lithium battery system that recycles at full-power in 0.9 seconds and has a fan so you can shoot full power at 1.1 FPS for two-and-a-half minutes (170 shots) continuously before you have to wait for it to cool!!!

It's astonishing how well this thing belts out light at 20 FPS at normal power levels unlike any other flash I've ever used.

26 March 2021, Friday

New: Viltrox Full-Frame 24mm f/1.8 autofocus for Sony: $429.

I don't have one so I haven't tried it yet, but this is an interesting new lens as it has autofocus, an aperture ring, an all-metal body and costs one-third what the Sony 24mm f/1.4 does. You can get it at Amazon or directly from Pergear.

Half off: Advancing Your Photography.

Marc Silber Advancing Your Photography

Advancing Your Photography.

Marc Silber's Advancing Your Photography is a better than average photo book that tries to help you see and make better pictures. Marc is giving it away if you order it direct from him and cover $9.97 for shipping and handling ($19.97 overseas). It sells for much more at Amazon.

While no one has ever written a book that fully explains artistic synthesis (as opposed to analysis of existing images or explaining technology), Marc has a couple of chapters that stress and explain the critical importance of visualization and the importance of worrying more about your photo than about your gear. In fact, it specifically call out the two biggest barriers to good photography, which are 1.) wasting your time worrying about your gear, and 2.) wasting time trying to adhere to "rules."

I've never seen a book fully illuminating artistic synthesis, which why and how to envision exactly what you want your image to be before you create it, but Marc touches the subject more than most. All the books I've seen talk about this, but none ever gets to the core of exactly how to create; creation is still a divine thing like consciousness itself. Many people have talked about or creative synthesis, but no one has ever described exactly how to create, or explained what is consciousness. We can talk for days about consciousness, but no one has the foggiest idea of where it comes from, how it develops in a baby, what it actually is if you had to create it yourself, or where it goes when we die.

So while Marc's book does have chapters filled with talk about apertures and ISOs and lenses and computer screen shots like every other camera book, the good news is that there is some meat about how actually to put all this to good effect.

Marc also covers the rest of the story, which is how to display and promote your work. Every nerd has a book about photo software; Marc's book goes beyond by covering what to think about before you pick up your camera, and what also to do with your work once it's completed.

For those of you who like to read, you might want to check it out, especially chapter 2, chapter 4 and chapter 6.

You can add the paperback versions of his two other books, Create and Secrets to Amazing Photo Composition for just $19 from Marc's own site (they're over over $30 combined at Amazon). This offer is not available at ANY other time or place.

Secrets to Amazing Photo Composition will unlock the many tools and secrets master photographers use in their amazing images so you can instantly improve! Create will help you to get more inspired and creative in your photography.

Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L

Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS.

Updated: Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS Review & Sample Image Files.

I added all my usual explicit detail to all the technical aspects of this lens' performance. I know this lens is so new that the review I published a month ago was a little light on details but I put it out anyway since so many were so curious about this new wonder lens.

Wow! This lens is tiny, and weightless. Bravo, Canon! At least someone is making genuinely new lens designs optimized for mirrorless, rather than just recycling the same old lenses we used to use for DSLRs.

Excellent: Magic "Angry Mama" Jar Opener & Filter Remover.

I just used my American-Made "Angry Mama" Jar Opener & Filter Remover again. It works wonders; it's super tough and super grippy and works better than any other opener I've used for gripping that which is too slippery otherwise. For eight bucks, you can't go wrong for freeing stuck filters or maple-syrup jar tops!

Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM

Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM.

New: Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM Review.

72mm filters, 27.5 oz./778g, 1⅓'/0.4m close focus, $1,999.

Sony finally joins the f/1.2 club. It's about time; Nikon had a 50mm f/1.1 in 1956, Canon had a 50mm f/0.95 in 1961 and LEICA had a 50mm f/1.2 ASPH in 1966 — all for mirrorless (rangefinder) cameras!

New: Ritz 256GB 265/120 MB/s V60 SD card: $59.

This is the lowest price I've seen for a card this big and this fast.

Up to $2,000 off: LG 4K OLED TVs.

Did you catch that? An entire product description make of nothing but initialisms - and it all made sense!

New: New Firmware for A9 II.

The A9 II gets a new in-camera cropping mode. This is great if you're using the app to transfer 2MP images, since you get the full 2MP for whatever you've cropped.

Honest: Buy Photoshop Elements outright — on DVD?

I kid you not, you can still buy Photoshop Elements 2021 on a DVD for next to nothing, which I presume will run essentially forever without monthly rental fees like Creative Cloud, which we only can rent, not buy. I don't use Creative Cloud; I use Photoshop CS6 from 2010, and it works great. Everything you see on this site from ten years ago up to the Z9 image below have all been through my ten-year old copy of CS6.

Be sure the DVD really runs forever; I didn't see anything about any rental fees to use the DVD version. Also know that Elements is a basic version of Photoshop; I haven't used it.

NEU: LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 35mm f/2 ASPH.

Eye of G-d.

LEICA is for masters, the immortals whose work lives forever, and for them, this newest APO-SUMMICRON-M 35mm f/2 APO is the only 35mm lens that will suffice.

For the rest of us, any of the older 35mm lenses still take the same pictures, be it the optically flawless SUMMILUX-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH (floating element), the flawless SUMMICRON-M 35mm f/2 ASPH, my beloved LEICA SUMMICRON SUMMICRON 35mm f/2, and even the classic LEICA SUMMARON 35mm f/2.8 all take the same pictures.

You know who you are. Don't ask if LEICA is worth it; ask are you and your work worthy of LEICA? The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.

$200 off: Nikon D750 & 24-120 VR: $1,997.

$100 off: Nikon Z5: $1,297.

New: Elvid StudioVision 4K HDR HDMI Monitor.

$120 off: Godox FV150 High Speed Sync Flash LED Light.

As I read this one, it's an LED continuous light with a flash feature to simulate a strobe. It has no Xenon tube for full-power flash. This appears to be a device that can hit the LEDs with a burst of power to be used as a flash, but it won't have the power or action-stopping ability of a real Xenon strobe.

Lens MTF

Updated: How to Read Modulation Transfer Functions (MTFs).

I brought it up to date, and added more reasons why you shouldn't waste too much time trying to compare MTFs, because each brand measures them differently and because even legitimate MTFs exaggerate differences that aren't visible in actual shooting.

Did You Know?

Much as how Penicillin and Post-it Notes were discovered by accident, somehow I was looking at the back of one of my EF lenses and oddly noticed an RF rear cap was on it — and fitting just fine. Weird!

You know how I called-out Canon for its RF caps only fitting RF lenses one way, rather than all three ways like EF rear caps (you have to stop and align RF caps manually, while EF caps just go on EF lenses anyway without looking), and EF rear caps have to be forced and cross-threaded to fit an RF lens, so I'd never thought of trying to jam an RF cap onto the back of an EF lens.

Somehow in a fit of inattention, I must have put an RF rear cap on the back of my beloved EF 100~400 L IS II, and it fit perfectly.

Curious, I tried a few RF rear caps on a few EF lenses, and wouldn't you know, they fit on EF lenses perfectly, and even go on perfectly all three ways, just like a native EF rear cap.

I'm sure others noticed this years ago, but it's an epiphany for me. This means I can dump all my EF rear caps and replace them with a fleet of RF rear caps, which are universal in fitting both EF and RF lenses perfectly.

I'm sure you all knew this, but in case I'm not the last one to discover it, here you go.

Bravo, Canon!

Are You Kidding?

Nein, LEICA really has introduced a new «Edition Daniel Craig × Greg Williams» version of the LEICA Q2.

Hey, if you're a no one, buying an expensive «special edition» with someone's name on it will make you someone, too. Heck, with two names on this special edition, it's like getting it for half price. Geesh, it takes all kinds. Remember, the only true LEICAs are the original sacred Barnack LEICAs and LEICA M cameras and lenses, and only these are immortal. The Q cameras are posh point & shoots, but not real LEICAs, not immortal, and not worthy of «editions.» Hats off to LEICA for being able to create a Klasse-system within their own system; there is an Unterklasse (lower class) that will buy, love and cherish these lesser editions, but honestly, if you're trying to impress the neighbors, they all know that even this «Edition Daniel Craig × Greg Williams LEICA Q2» costs less than the most basic vanilla LEICA M10 around the necks of the kids riding their bicycles around your cul-de-sac.

While most of us laugh at these «Editions», the joke's on us. Special editions of real LEICAs usually sell out in minutes.

Bravo LEICA!

24 February 2021, Wednesday

New: Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 for Sony: $899, also comes for LEICA L.

Also at Adorama for Sony and for LEICA L.

By only going as wide as 28mm, rather than 24mm, it lets them make it smaller. No big deal; I'd much rather have the genuine Sony 24-105/4G or the Sony 24-240mm, but that's just me. Hint: f/2.8 was for film. With digital's high ISOs, there is very little difference with f/2.8; depth-of-field and bokeh don't change much with only one stop difference.

New Smart-Cropping Patent!

As you may know, I've earned my living in digital imaging since the 1980s, and as an innovator I have two prior US patents. I don't go off about it, but I have been deeply involved with the core design of technology for a very long time. It's how I've always been so intimately familiar with what's going on inside our cameras; I've been working on sub-pixel processing since the 1980s.

I just got my third patent along with my friend, optics patent attorney and co-inventor Ben Langlotz. Ben is really good: he has numerous patents and also recently handled the registration of my trademark, Ken Rockwell®.

The new invention is US patent No. 10,868,965, which is a huge benefit especially for bird shooters and just about everyone who uses zooms.

What's new is allowing camera firmware to allow both the full optical zoom range of your lens, and allow in-camera live smart cropping as you zoom-in at the longest end. It shoots full-frame at wider settings, and intelligently starts cropping-in as you zoom to the longest settings. Instead of shooting in APS-C all the time for birds, but not being able to get full-frame as you zoom out, with a firmware update your camera can be smart enough to shoot full-frame at most zoom settings, and only start cropping-in as you zoom your existing lenses to their very longest settings.

Point-and-shoots have had a similar feature for years, but they use an electronic zoom control which, as soon as you get to the end of optical zoom, only then starts going into digital zoom. DSLR and mirrorless zoom lenses stop dead at the end of their range. What’s brilliant about this patent is letting you control a much larger digital zoom range using the same lenses and cameras you already own. This patent gives the same extended digital zoom range WITHOUT needing your DSLR or mirrorless lens’ zoom ring to go past its stop.

This patent isn’t so much about digital zoom as it is about how to control it even though our zoom lenses stop dead at the end of their marked range.

Your camera can be set to add an increasing amount of cropping (digital zoom) at only the longest end of each of your zooms. It allows a broader zoom range, and especially for birders or others who often crop. Now cameras will be smart enough only to crop as you get to the longest zoom settings. You won't have to stop and select image areas or crops; your camera will be able to read the zoom setting and automatically start cropping at the longest end of your zoom range.

For instance, with a 100~400mm zoom, your camera could shoot full-frame with zoom settings from 100~300mm, and as you go from, say, 300~400mm could start cropping-in little-by-little as you get to the 400mm setting, so your 400mm setting might be cropped-in to, for example, an 800mm equivalent. Who wouldn't love to have that option? It works just as well with other zooms; your 16-35mm could shoot full-frame from 16~30mm, and from 30~35mm gradually start cropping-in to a 70mm equivalent! This works just as well with APS-C and other cameras.

This works with all your existing zooms — assuming your camera maker offers you updated firmware to do this — and you'll be able to set the ultimate level of just how far you want it to crop/magnify at the longest end (1.5×, 2×, 3×, etc.).

Brilliant! This is a feature you'll be able to use if you want to, or just turn it off. It will be your choice, as soon as camera makers start including it.

If you have questions or want to use or license this, feel free to contact Ben directly, or call Canon at (800) OK-CANON, Nikon at (800) NIKON-US, Sony at (800) 222-SONY or Fuji at (800) 800-FUJI and ask them to add this feature. (the links give other contact options.) Be sure to give them Ben's contact information, and keep asking them when you can expect an update for your camera.

$400 off: Fuji X100F w/free goodies: $899.

YES!!!! I kept my X100F; the newer X100V is nice, but I prefer the X100F's rear 4-way controller to the foolish "touch functions. Get your X100F on super-sale while you can before they're all gone.

$100 Off: Nikon 28-300mmm VR: $846.95.

My Nikon 28-300mm VR is my favorite Nikon lens. Actually it's $200 off; I paid $1,050 when it came out in 2010 and it immediately replaced almost every other Nikon lens for me. It's super sharp and practical for full frame. Look at the pictures I can make with it:

Bac

Backlit trees at El Capitan Meadow, Yosemite Valley, October 2017. Nikon D850 HDR Mode hand-held, Nikon 28-300mm VR at 40mm at f/8 at 1/60 at Auto ISO 64. bigger or camera-original © file.

While you people insist I always have to try out every lens that comes out, when I shoot Nikon, I grab my 28-300mm VR and 16-35 VR and I'm done.

LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH

LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH.

OLD: LEICA is reintroducing the 50mm f/1.2 NOCTILUX-M ASPH.

It's very similar, but not identical, in optics and appearance to the original 1966 version, which was the world's first series-production aspherical lens.

What has me chuckling is that LEICA pitches it for its magical softness at f/1.2. If I want a softer image at f/1.2, I'll use the Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 ASPH for one-tenth the price with even more speed! Clearly LEICA isn't about pictures, it's about owning nice things.

How to tell today's 2021 version? Easy! The original is marked NOCTILUX and uses a rounded font, while today's is marked NOCTILUX-M and uses LEICA's modern square font. In the beginning all LEICA lenses were LEICA lenses, but after the failed R system LEICA started to add a -M to the real LEICA lenses, or -R to lenses for the failed R system.

LEICA has gone so far to include its old-style packaging with this new lens:

LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50mm f/1.2 Packaging

Honestly, if I want a slightly softer rendition with a real classic lens with the same looks, also easily available in silver, I use my 1961 SUMMILUX 50mm f/1.4.

NEW: Fuji GFX 100S. Also at Adorama.

However, after just one day of glory for the Sony A1 (whose name was simply copied from Canon A1 of the late 1970s), Fuji announces the GFX 100S with over twice as many bigger medium-format pixels for less money than the day-old Sony A1. The improved GFX 100S sells for $4,000 less than the old GFX 100. Hah!

Canon RF 85mm f/2

Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM.

NEW: Canon RF 85mm f/2 MACRO IS STM Review & Sample Image Files.

It feels so good finally getting to review a sharp lens for a change rather than the manual-focus copies from China that kept me busy all of December. This RF 85mm f/2 is soooo much sharper than the not-that great but good-enough TTArtisan 50mm f/1.4 (a copy of a LEICA lens), not so great 7Artisans 50mm f/1.05 (a bokeh effects lens) and Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 (another cheap copy of a LEICA lens, and also a bokeh effect lens and never that sharp in the corners). These lenses work, but nowhere near as well as a camera-brand lens if you want corner sharpness — but that's not why people buy the TTArtisan 50mm f/1.4, 7Artisans 50mm f/1.05 or Mitakon 50mm f/0.95. Eeeesh, I hate adapting lenses. I review them because you people ask, and it's shocking how much better real lenses like this RF lens are over adapted lenses if you want a sharp lens that just goes. Hallelujah!

NEW: The Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 is so new it's now on the way to B&H, and coming soon to Amazon. It's already at eBay if you know How to Win at eBay.

The Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 is a bokeh effect lens; it's not as sharp as any Canon, Nikon, Sony or LEICA 50mm lens, but if you want f/0.95 bokeh for less than $12,500, here you go.

13 January 2021, Wednesday

NEW: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM. Also at Adorama.

Eh? I thought I reviewed this years ago. Turns out I did; Sony has been selling a Zeiss-branded FE 35mm f/1.4 since 2014.

This new Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is smaller, lighter, sharper and less expensive. Specifically, all lenses today are super-sharp stopped-down and in the center at all apertures, but the Zeiss FE 35mm f/1.4 was less sharp in the corners at larger apertures.

This new Sony 35/1.4 is now sharp in the corners at f/1.4, as well as focussing closer and being smaller and lighter — and $200 less expensive. Progress marches on.

Ruin

Ruin, San Diego County, 28 July, 1996. Shot with a 65mm Schneider Super-Angulon with a square Tiffen ND grad in a Cokin holder on 4x5" Fuji Velvia 50 in a 1956 Linhof Super Technika IV.

Updated: Fuji Velvia 50.

Can you believe a 36-exposure roll now costs $18, and a roll of 120 costs $11? I'm so glad I have a Prepper's freezer full of a lifetime supply of 135, 120 and especially 220 I bought back when it was about $4 a roll of 36, $3 a roll of 120 and $5.50 for 220. My frozen film looks at least as good as whatever's sold today. Man, 220 film shoots soooo good in my HASSELBLAD E24 backs and I rarely have to load them!

Wow, HASSELBLAD prices have doubled since about 2016. No one is making any more of these beauties, so just like 1969 Hemi 'Cuda convertibles or Mercedes 300SLs, prices are only going up. Get yours while you still can.

Ahem, the world's best 70-200mm, a pro lens made in Japan. I prefer it on Z with the FTZ to the far more expensive and more plasticy made-in-Thailand consumer-grade Z 70-200/2.8. It was a good buy when it came out at $2,799 in 2016, and a steal at $900 off.

It was $2,797 when introduced just 4 years ago, and was well worth it then, and more than worth it today.

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
