LEICA M6

LEICA M6 TTL 0.85 und LEICA SUMMILUX 50mm f/1.4.

Updated: LEICA M6 & M6 TTL Review.

The only big change is the price. Back when I first suggested the M6 TTL as a great way to get into LEICA photography in 2009 it sold used for about $1,000. Today it sells for $3,000 used.

Laugh all you want, but as we know, LEICA prices only go UP, so if you had gotten some back then, you would have had great cameras and tripled your money even if all you did was leave it sitting in your safe deposit box for the past 13 years. Better than real estate, there are no property taxes, utility bills, homeowner's associations or any of that.

LEICA TRINOVID 10 x 40

LEICA TRINOVID 10 × 40.

What's old is new again: LEICA TRINOVID 10 × 40.

I last reviewed these classic binocular gems 12 years ago, and lo and behold, LEICA has just introduced a new edition of them for 2022.

These excel at offering more performance in a smaller package than any other new binocular, but sadly the new version uses simpler optics for a smaller field-of-view with more weight than the originals, but the new version does focus more closely. It's easy to find the originals at eBay, which is where I got mine (How to Win at eBay).

245 years ago today we dumped the British Union Jack part of our first short-lived "Grand Union" American flag, and replaced it with our flag with the familiar circle of 13 stars.

Two years before, on 14 June 1775, the US Army was first formed.

Updated: Nikon Lens Compatibility.

I cleaned up this very complicated page.

I so love Canon; I don't need a lens compatibility page for Canon since every camera and lens they've made since 1987, be it 35mm film SLRs, DSLRs or mirrorless, all works with each other. The worst case is that you need a simple adapter and you're good to go.

The reason for this huge difference is that Canon revolutionized the world in 1987 with their EOS (electro-optical system). Everything about Canon's EF EOS lenses, from focussing to diaphragm control and data communication, have all been 100% electronic since 1987 in Canon, while half of what Nikon offers today still has mechanical vestiges that trace all the way back to 1959, and it's a bear for Nikon and its customers trying to get lenses and cameras to work together — and a huge pain for me trying to keep track of it all.

New from Sigma

NEW: Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 Full-Frame for Sony. (also at Adorama.)

NEW: Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 Full-Frame for Leica L. (also at Adorama.)

NEW: Sigma LH756-01 Hood (replacement) for 16-28.

16-28mm? This is hardly a "zoom" lens. This is the same limited 1.75× zoom ratio as a 20-35mm lens, and back in the 1990s when 20-35mm lenses were popular, I used to laugh at how little the image zoomed from one end to the other of the zoom range.

I'd much rather have the superb Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 rather than this 16-28mm lens. Neither are stabilized, they cost the same and the Sony lens is faster, smaller and lighter.

26 MP APS-C, IBIS, 15 FPS, 1/8,000 mechanical shutter (40 FPS, 1/32,768 electronic shutter), 1/250 flash sync, ISO 160-12,800 (80 L - 51,200 H2), 1,080/240, 4K/120, 6K/30, 5.76 MDot 0.8× OLED finder, 23.2oz/660g, NP-W235 battery rated 720 shots.

Also comes as a kit with the MKX 18-55mm T2.9, as a kit with the MKX 50-135mm T2.9 and as a kit with both the 18-55mm and 50-135mm cine lenses.

Fujinon MKX lenses are pro manual-focus, manual diaphragm cinematography lenses; you don't want them for still shooting.

What's really nice about the X-H2s is that it has seven preset C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7 settings right on its top dial. I have yet to try one, but I'm told that these now recall a lot more than just film profile and contrast; supposedly they recall focus mode and even if you want still or video mode. If these C settings really do recall just about everything like focus and exposure modes and screen brightness and advance modes or self timers and ISO settings and everything, this will make the X-H2s head and shoulders above other Fuji cameras cameras for usability. We'll see.

NEW: VBG-XH Vertical Grip for X-H2s. (also at Adorama.)

NEW: VBG-XH File-Transmitter Grip for X-H2s.

For just $1,999 this is going to be a very popular lens, with a 225-900mm full-frame equivalent as shot on Fuji's APS-C cameras.

The roadmap shows us that much later this year we may see a new XF 56mm f/1.2 (85mm eq.) to replace the 2014 version and an XF 30mm f/2.8 (45mm eq.) macro, with early 2023 bringing us an XF 8mm f/3.5 ultrawide (12mm eq.)

More on DSLRs

I wrote about my thoughts about some new DSLRs potentially being discontinued on Friday. Here's more about why I still prefer DSLRs for studio work:

While mirrorless is the cash cow of camera marketing departments today and I prefer mirrorless for available-light nature and landscape shooting since I can see how my pictures will look before I press the shutter, of course I prefer my DSLR for use in my studio shooting with xenon strobes. I prefer my DSLR in the studio because I'm shooting close-up at f/22 under strobes with manual focus hand-held. SLRs and DSLRs are always viewing through genuinely live optical finders at maximum aperture for fast, easy and precise manual focus, and then stopping-down automatically and instantly to f/22 for each and every shot.

Mirrorless rarely opens the diaphragm all the way while viewing, giving inferior manual focus since you're usually half stopped-down while trying to focus. With strobes (flash) you don't have the advantage of seeing the final picture before you take it, and with mirrorless you're encumberedd with an electronic rather than a live optical finder. DSLRs make it faster and easier to shoot under strobes.

If you're in a studio shooting stills, strobes are the way to go as their instantaneous bursts of light eliminate any motion or camera shake blur, and you have so much light you can stop down as far as you want to keep everything sharp. That's why my photos of cameras and lenses that illustrate my reviews are always so sharp; you can't get this sharpness with continuous (video, CFL or LED) lighting unless you use a tripod, and once you do that, you slow down your shooting so far setting up each shot manually that it will take hours to shoot what I knock out in a few minutes hand-held.

30 May 2022, Memorial Day

$800 Off: Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 VR: $1,596.95.

Nikon's top F-mount DSLR midrange zoom. It was $2,397 when it first came out.

Works great on mirrorless with the FTZ.

$900 Off: Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR FL: $1,896.95.

The world's best 70-200mm lens, period. I prefer it to the dinkier Z 70-200/2.8, and this pro lens costs less than the plasticy Z version. This amazing FL lens was $2,800 when it first came out in 2016t.

Works great on mirrorless with the FTZ.

$400 Off: Nikon AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G ED: $1,396.95.

The world's best ultra-ultra-wide — back in 2007 when it came out. Today, get the mirrorless versions from Canon (RF 14-35mm f/4 or RF 15-35mm f/2.8) or Nikon (Z 14-30mm f/4 or Z 14-24mm f/2.8), they're all superb. This classic AF-S lens is an impractical beast as it has no way to use a front protective filter for its huge fishbowl front element.

I paid $1,800 for mine when it first came out.

Works great on mirrorless with the FTZ.

$340 Off: Nikon AF-S 200-500mm: $1,056.95. (also at Crutchfield.)

This 200-500mm is one of the things that keeps some people in the Nikon system; no one else makes anything that is as fast and covers such a great long range, and it sells for a fraction of what bigger, heavier and less useful lenses do. This 200-500mm is a gem unique to the Nikon system.

Works great on mirrorless with the FTZ.

$300 Off: Nikon AF-S 500mm f/5.6: $3,296.95.

I prefer the utility of the 200-500mm above, and the 200-500mm is just as fast and costs only one-third as much as this expensive Fresnel lens which I've also reviewed in detail.

Works great on mirrorless with the FTZ.

DSLRs?

People ask what I think about reports of discontinued DSLR lenses and bodies.

It's a natural progression as mirrorless takes over. Old products get discontinued as new ones replace them. DSLRs today are in exactly the same place as 35mm cameras were back in 2004: perfectly useful, but even fewer people will be buying them new in years to come.

It's like film. Back in 2004 most of us started to get digital cameras rather than getting new 35mm cameras. I couldn't be sure if Fuji was going to keep making Velvia, so I invested in a lifetime buy and filled my freezer with all I'd ever need. I was right; the new film I bought for $5 a roll sells for $23 today, and I have all I'll ever need in dead but extremely useful sizes like 4×5 Readyload and 220.

People buying new gear today mostly get mirrorless. People get very little brand new DSLR gear, so makers are going to make less of them.

Not that DSLRs are bad, just that there are so many out there for those of us who love them that makers don't really need to be making new ones if people aren't going to buy them, so of course we see older model cameras and lenses being discontinued.

Photography has been like this for almost 200 years. As new things come out, like dry plates rather than wet plates or film rather than glass plates, we get the new items and need much less of the old. Why did Kodak dump Kodachrome in 2010? Because very few people bought it as most people (like me) upgraded to Fujichrome in the 1990s.

Especially with all the great used gear out there, the world doesn't need that many new DSLRs anymore.

If you really need a D850, now's the time to get yours new while it's on sale at $2,497. It used to cost $3,297 when I got my first two back in 2017, so don't complain to me if they go out of stock or cost $5,000 each in the future.

Mailbag

A reader wrote to ask about Kodachrome color balance.

Kodachrome always had nasty green shifts in the highlights just before it went completely white. You'd see this on the edges of white clouds in the sky. It was always ugly when projected, but that's the best we had in olden days before digital, and this "color crossover" (the magenta layer having a differently-shaped characteristic curve than cyan and yellow) was always corrected beautifully when printed in magazines.

Kodachrome had a slight green shift when each new roll shipped from Kodak, and it became more magenta as it aged and eventually passed its expiration date if you didn't develop it first. Yes, film's color balance changes with aging before processing.

Serious photographers used to buy big batches, test and age them, and shoot their special batch when at its best color balance.

Kodak eventually introduced "Professional" versions, which were shipped at the optimum color balance. We had to keep it refrigerated so it wouldn't shift away from optimum, and processed it promptly for the best color balance.

The regular versions of the film varied more, since it wasn’t refrigerated and Kodak shipped it when it was still a bit green, expecting people might have a roll in their camera for a year. Also back when people still used old fashioned "camera stores," your local store might have Kodachrome sitting on their shelves for a year, since local stores never sold as much volume as Adorama and B&H, from whom I've been buying my film since the 1970s for exactly this reason!

The regular and Pro versions were the same film and aged in the same way, just that the Pro versions were aged to perfection, then refrigerated and shipped at their peak, and expected you to treat the film well to prevent it from shifting away from perfection.

Even the pro versions had greenish highlights, one of many reasons (like pinholes) we all upgraded to Fujifilm in the 1990s.

Film was such a pain!

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
