Half Dome in Clouds at Sunset

NEW: Autumn Light in Yosemite Photo Workshop Thursday~Sunday 14~17 October 2021!

It's back for the first time in two years.

Here are photos from 2019's trip, which also included a fantastic trip to the Eastern Sierra.

The October 2019 Eastern Sierra trip was so mind-blowing that we're taking a break from it this year; it's just the Yosemite trip this fall (unless you ask real nicely and there might - just might- be something right after Yosemite trip, for a special few).

Nikon 75-150mm f/3.5 Series E

Nikon 75-150mm f/3.5 Series E AI-s (52mm filters, 18.3 oz./520 g, 3.3'/1m close focus, came in black trim (top, 1980) and in silver trim (bottom, 1981-1985), about $40 used if you know How to Win at eBay.)

UPDATED: Nikon 75~150mm Series E AI-s review.

Not a big update, but I hadn't realized that this lens, immortalized by Galen Rowell with his shot of the rainbow over the Dalai Lama's palace, now sells for only about $40 used if you know How to Win at eBay.

Galen carried only this tele and a Nikon 24mm f/2.8 AI-s for years so he was light enough to run and get the shots, like the fleeting rainbow, that others with too much gear, couldn't.

Venus Laowa 35mm f/0.95

Venus Laowa Argus 35mm f/0.95

NEW: Full-Frame 35mm f/0.95 Review & Sample Image Files.

The world's widest full-frame f/0.95 lens, now available for Canon RF, for Nikon Z and for Sony E.

Low Light Masterpiece!

I LOVE my Nikon Z fc! It's a sharp, lightweight well-made camera that makes it easy and fun to take great pictures. Especially when used with its dedicated Nikon Z 16-50mm VR DX lens, it's a super-compact camera that creates huge, brilliant images, especially hand-held at night.

My Nikon Z fc and tiny stabilized Z 16-50mm VR DX combo are great for walking around and shooting hand-held at night.

While armchair photographers might think that an APS-C camera and a slow kit zoom are no good for hand-held wandering-around night shooting, they obviously never left their desk. For instance, no one ever needs to shoot above ISO 8,000 unless you're doing something very wrong.

Here are some quick snaps. The 16-50mm VR DX has a great stabilizer, coupled with the great high-ISO performance of the Z fc makes this easy:

NEW: Canon AD-E1 Normal to Multi-Function Shoe Adapter: $40.

Canon's unclear as to weather (ha ha) this is simply to ensure weather sealing or if you need this adapter for the goodies we bought last week, like the EL-1 flash and 600EX II-RT to work properly. No, I don't know if all the non-radio flashes I use every day like my 580EX II and 320EX just work on the R3, or if any of these need this new adapter.

We'll see when my R3 arrives, which is already on order.

NEW: Nikon Full-Frame Z 40mm f/2: $297.

Canon 5DS

Canon 5DS/R with EF 50mm f/1.2L.

$2,400 OFF and In-Stock: 50 MP Canon 5DS/R: Just $1,499!!!

My Canon 5DS/R is my favorite DSLR of all time, with just over 50 megapixels. I also prefer it to anything mirrorless because it just goes, with none of the delays some people accept with mirrorless.

Get yours while you can; I paid full price ($3,899) for mine and they won't last long at this price. I know people who placed backorders for these back in October and are just getting them now; this is the deal of the decade.

*"Ultra Wideband" means that there is no Bayer RGB color filter matrix over the sensor and thus no interpolation. Therefore the Monochrom versions have about double the apparent resolution compared to a typical color image sensor — however just as with B&W film these Monochrom models require the same color contrast filters over the front of the lens for good contrast when shot outdoors or any time you need to add tonal separation between colors.

07 August 2021, Saturday

NEW: Tamron 35~150mm f/2~2.8 for Sony Full Frame.

This is a bit of a whopper of a lens, but I'm intrigued by its unusually useful zoom range and extra stop of speed at the wide end.

I don't need my midrange zooms to go wider than 35mm, but I need them to go longer than 70mm and want them to go longer than 105mm. I adore the 35-150mm range; heck, I prefer 35-105mm over 24-70mm any day. 70mm just doesn't do anything for me when I need the long end of the range of a midrange zoom.

Want to know an open secret? I've owned the state-of-the-art Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II since it came out, but I rarely use it. I prefer the inexpensive Canon EF 28-135mm IS USM and it's often what's on my Canons. The L lens can be sharper in the lab, but I'm not shooting in the lab and I so love being able to get to 135mm rather than just 70mm. The Canon EF 28-135mm IS USM is a lot less expensive, smaller and much lighter and adds stabilization, but two stops slower.

I don't need any wider than 35mm in a midrange zoom because a 16-35mm is always in my pocket, and even with a 12-24mm in my pocket you just don't need the range between 24 and 35mm.

NEW: Tamron 28~75mm f/2.8 for Sony Full-Frame.

NEW: TTartisan 50mm f/1.4 for Nikon and for Sony.

These have the same optics as the TTartisan 50/1.4 I tested for LEICA M mount. You're better off getting the LEICA-mount version because you can adapt LEICA-M lenses to any mirrorless camera if you change brands, but you can't adapt a Sony or Nikon Z to other mounts.

All of these are manual-focus purely mechanical lenses with zero data communication.

Going, going …

Nikon 200mm f/4 AF Micro

Nikon 200mm f/4 ED-IF AF Micro-NIKKOR (1993 ~ 2020).

Nikon's greatest macro lens of all time, the mighty 200mm f/4 ED-IF AF Micro-NIKKOR, went out of production last year. As I expected, the used price has already shot up 50% from about $1,000 last year when it sold new for about $1,750, to about $1,500 used today if you know How to Win at eBay.

Why is it so great? Simple: it's optically flawless (a huge step up from Nikon's much older 200mm f/4 AI-s), it's built like a tank, it has a compensating aperture system so the effective exposure stays the same regardless of focus distance (critical for manual exposures in the studio), and most importantly, it's a 200mm lens so you're not always on top of your subject blocking your light or giving the weirder perspectives you get when using 105mm or shorter lens.

There's one left new in Japan, and that's it. I got mine used at eBay about 15 years ago, and every product photo you see on this site (except the photo of this 200mm) is shot with it.

I always focus it manually, although it is an AF lens. The FTZ is defective and only gives manual focus on the Z cameras with this lens. I use it on a DSLR.

Deal: Canon EDC-10 Camera Sling Backpack: $39.99.

A reader wrote me about how he loves this small sling pack for a body and a couple of lenses, and when I saw it was just $39.99 and I had never heard of it before, I figured I'd share it. We all have our preferences, but he says it's the best bag he's ever used because it gives him easy access to his gear and sometimes he even forgets it's on him.

Flash Book Reviews

Here are two new books I've read:

Wong Way Photography

Old School Photography.

I love the cover of this book, which is the number-one new release in color photography at Amazon.

Tthis book is very much like it's cover, showing a rebranded old meterless Nikon F. Immediately a better title came to mind in light of its author and tongue-in-cheek cover art: "Wong Way Photography."

All kidding aside, this book is a colorful summary of contemporary film photography, mostly encouraging newcomers to try 35mm. Personally I look at 35mm film as a grainy special effect compared to modern digital, and in fact, even my iPhone's, superior technical quality over 35mm film, but for those who think it's fun to play with obsolete technology out of curiosity, this book covers the basics (as I've covered here since back when film was all we had), as well as having plenty of sections on the basics of taking good pictures.

There's nothing new here if you're a seasoned shooter, but for people unfamiliar with film, it's a fun and encouraging read.

Hint: If you really want to shoot film well, forget 35mm and man-up to medium format, especially Hasselblad. A Hasselblad setup used to cost about as much as a modest suburban house back in the 1970s, while today you can get a complete Hasselblad 6 × 6 setup with stunning German-made Zeiss lenses for the same or less as a new mirrorless camera.

Coming Soon

Polaroid Now book

Polaroid Now.

Polaroid Now starts off with a few pages of written history about the company as well as the folks who revived it recently, and then it gets good: most of this book is a portfolio of very creative work by numerous artists using Polaroid materials & cameras, new and old.

This book is great because it puts crazy ideas in your head to go out and try with a Polaroid. It shows new ways of thinking about photography, something that happens when you have a simple camera that just works and you actually have to be creative about what you do with it, rather than getting flummoxed by all the menus and options in today's disastrously distracting digital cameras.

This is mostly an art portfolio book with no time wasted on technique and lots of time spent showing other cool things people have done with Polaroids.

Gotta love my iPhone 12 Pro Max: I snapped a photo of the book cover with my iphone to show you what the book looks like, and my image here is better than the image they use at Amazon to show the book. So there!

$170 Off: Luxli Fiddle Pocket LED light: $179.

This is a very high quality Norwegian-made all-metal pocket-sized version of the larger Luxli lights I use at KenRockwell.TV. It can make all colors of light with its RGBAW LEDs and do all sorts of crazy tricks like simulating bonfires and explosions and TVs when coupled with its app, or just set its color and brightness and equivalent color filtration manually on the light itself at its own color LCD. This Fiddle version comes with a color calibration certificate, has 476 lumens, 95 CRI, 3,000~10,000K, 6.1 × 2.9 × 0.8" / 15.4 × 7.3 × 2.1 cm, 8 oz./227g, built-in 18.5 Wh battery that runs about 3 hours. It charges and/or is powered continuously via USB-C. Here's the user's manual.

It comes in red as well as black, and also comes as many different kits with various small mounts and cases and diffusers; just click the options at this page.

These are continuous lights for video; I prefer strobes (flash) for still photos.

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
