BLACK is Beautiful: Here's a gorgeous Nikon FE with lens on eBay. (How to Win at eBay). FEs are becoming hard to find in working order; the FE is one of my favorite 35mm cameras of all time. In this case, for just under $320 delivered for camera and lens, you're all set for shooting film with a real Nikon with one of Nikon's best lenses ideal for this camera. Heck, here's what looks like an even nicer one for just under $270 delivered from the same place! FEs are 40 years old and usually were used often, so they're getting hard to find this nice.

Lots off Lots: Apple Black Friday.

$500 Off: 13" MacBook Pro M1 16 GB 1 TB: $1,399!!!

$200 Off: Mac Studio 10-core M1 Max, 24-Core GPU, 32 GB, 512 GB: $1,799. (After posting this I realized I needed one of these, so I just ordered one of these for Christmas for myself!!! I've never seen these on sale before.)

$200 Off: Glyph 8 TB rugged self-powered 560 MB/s USB-C SSD: $999.95.

$300 Off: Glyph 8 TB rugged self-powered 2,700 MB/s Atom Pro NVMe Thunderbolt 3 SSD: $1,699.95. (I totally have had an 8TB SSD on my Christmas list for a while. I use a big, heavy externally-powered 8TB hard drive now to store all my photos and videos I've ever created (love JPG!), and with a portable SSD I could carry my entire creative output with me everywhere I go, and it works so much faster from an SSD — and I believe the Glyphs are made in USA!!!!)

$150 Off: 13" MacBook Pro M1 8 GB 256 GB: $849.

$60 Off: 11" iPad Pro M2 128 GB: $739.

$150 Off: 13" iPad Pro M1 128 GB: $949.

$233 off: DJI FPV Drone Combo w/Case, Card & Strobe: $919.99.

$49: Sale on Radiant Imaging presets. I use Radiant Imaging software on most of my images to make them look better, faster.

24 November 2022, THANKSGIVING

SanDisk Super Sale

These are the best deals of the year. I often buy whatever SanDisk cards and SSDs I need for the coming year during this sale each year. It's sneaky because it all expires Friday at 4:30PM EDT (1:30 PM PST), so it's only good for a few hours. It's almost as if they want to sneak this by us, and here we go:

Cards

Up to $40 off: UHS-I microSDXC cards w/SD Adapter: 1 TB $99.99, 512 GB $39.99 & 256 GB $19.99!!!

55% off: Ultra UHS-I microSDXC cards 32 GB ~ 1 TB: $6.49 ~ $109.99!!!

54% Off: 64 GB ~ 1 TB Extreme UHS-I microSDXC w/adapter: $10.99 ~ $117.99!!!

Up to half off: Extreme PRO Compact Flash (CF) 128 GB $79.99, 64 GB $51.99!!!

Portable SSDs

SSDs use a very different technology and are much faster than flash thumb drives, which if you're transferring lots of data or running your operating system from this drive, really matters. I have different Mac operating systems on my external drives and can boot and run whatever OS I want.

$300 off: 2 TB Extreme V2 Portable SSD (1,000 MB/s): $144.99!!! I bought this one last year for twice the price!

$650 off: 4 TB Extreme V2 Portable SSD (1,000 MB/s): $349.99!!!

$65 off: 1 TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD (400 MB/s): $109.99!!!

$70 off: 512 GB Ultra Luxe USB-A Flash Drive: $39.99!!!

$42 off: 512 GB Microscopic Cruzer Ultra Fit USB-A Flash Drive: $37.99!!!

I use two of these 512 GB Microscopic Cruzer Ultra Fit USB-A Flash Drives in rotation for the dash cam in my car. They're tiny, and I paid a lot more for them earlier this year.

American Pro Audio Rules!!!

$70 Off: Shure Classic "Elvis" Super 55 Mic (blue foam): $179.

I've used Shure mics since the 1980s when I earned my living in music recording and used a pair of Shure SM-81, which Shure just serviced for me last year. Great company; for a low fixed price their repair was to send me a pair of brand-new mics! I bought my SM-81 new back in 1981 back when a digital recorder cost as much as a nice house!!! It's great that great companies still service products I bought over 40 years ago.

While digital cameras and lenses are mostly disposable today, I never get cheap with audio gear, which pretty much lasts a lifetime. If you want a pair of $1,200 American-made pro headphones for the holidays, do it, because you'll probably be enjoying them for the rest of your life. I was only 19 when I bought my SM-81s and I'm still using them today in my 60s! Ditto for my Koss 4AA headphones I got in the late 1970s, and as far as I know, Koss may still be servicing them under their lifetime warranty. Koss last serviced mine - for free - in the 1990s when they had an intermittent connection.

It always pays to invest in quality from American companies. We can't do that for cameras today, but we Shure can do it for pro audio gear.

Update - so after I wrote that above, I phoned Koss at (800) USA-KOSS (same number from memory all these decades) to see if my headphones I bought back in the Disco era are still under warranty 45 years later. Not really, as they changed the design so they'd be more likely to replace them rather than repair them, but the only thing my 45 year-old-headphones need today is new foam for the screens, which after 45 years have fallen apart. No big deal; the woman who picked up the phone right away took my name and address and mailed me replacement screens - no charge. Not only that, but the current Koss 4AA headphones are still made in USA. God bless America! Koss 4AA were the standard headphones used in live recording, radio & DJing back then. Great sound (for the era), indestructible and lots of isolation so you could hear what was going on. Everyone had a pair.

I just checked the price. 4AA were also popular because of their reasonable price — often just $29 on sale in the late 1970s. While these high-quality American classics now sell today for a whopping $74, I checked inflation, and $74 today is only half of what $29 was worth in the late 1970s! It pays to buy American; this is why I don't waste my time with crummy Chinese-made disposable audio products.

Want an awesome gift for yourself? While the 4AA were and are for use in the field where you need lots of isolation, today everyone who loves music deserves a pair of Audeze LCD-X. I've never heard better headphones at any price, and for just $1,200 with gorilla-proof road case, they're nearly free considering how much use you'll get out of them in a lifetime. Your kids will be fighting over them when you pass.

My SM-81 were made in America, serviced today in America and still made in North America (Shure's own factory in sunny México), and Koss and Audeze are still made right here in the U. S. A. where quality and support matters.

New? Pentax KF DSLR: $849.95. (also at Adorama for $3 less.)

New? Pentax KF DSLR w/18-55mm: $949.95. (also at Adorama for $3 less.)

A new DSLR? That's weird, but it makes sense coming from Pentax, seeing that the last time I reviewed a Pentax DSLR (the K3) it was so far behind Nikon and Canon it was obvious why we never hear much from Pentax anymore. When I think of Pentax, I think of what they did well, which was the Pentax Spotmeter V and the Pentax Digital Spotmeter, both of which were used by Ansel Adams and which are still today's state-of-the-art for exposing film, and of course Pentax' reasonably priced and practical 645 medium-format cameras and the mighty Pentax 67 of olden days.

The Pentax K1000 was extremely popular for decades, but it was popular because it was the least expensive decent 35mm camera you could buy in olden times, and thus a favorite of school photo classes.

Today I'm amused that people settle for anything else other than pro-level Nikon 35mm cameras, which back in the day were by far the world's most coveted SLRs. Everyone would rather have been shooting 35mm Nikons, but back in their day they were rightfully far more expensive than the offerings from Canon, Olympus, Pentax and the rest.

Today I believe all those brands of 35mm cameras pretty much sell used for about the same price, and if that's the case, I'm unsure why anyone would waste time with second-best consumer cameras when they could own a pro-level Nikon 35mm SLR for the same price. Back in the 1960s ~ 1980s Nikon 35mm SLRs uniquely ruled in a way no brand does today in digital - and that's why people who remember the 1980s still have a thing for Nikon digital.

Today I think of Pentax for sport optics like spotting scopes and binoculars, which they have always done extremely well.

11 November 2022, Veteran's Day

Huge Audio Deal: $898 off: Full Set of Five Jamo Home Theater Speakers: $399!!!!!

For only 31¢ on the dollar, this is everything you need to rock your home theater the right way. Sound bars are awful, only giving a stereo effect if you sit exactly in the center of the room, and little speakers on stands have no bass, while this system, at a give-away price, give you two full-size, full-range speakers to give you full stereo even in the bass.

Systems with a single subwoofer have to sum everything to mono in the bass, even though movies are mixed with the bass going to discrete channels. I way prefer stereo bass, and if you don't you always can add any subwoofer to this system — but I doubt you'll want to. Hint: when setting up your receiver, be sure to program the receiver to "no subwoofer" and L+R = FULL RANGE, in which case all the bass is routed to the big main speakers, in glorious full-range stereo.

Especially if music is your thing, one subwoofer in mono is never enough, this system give you complete separation at all frequencies.

No, I haven't heard these specific speakers, but a deal is a deal and I am a huge fan of full range speakers; little speakers on stands take the same floor space as tower speakers, while the internal box volume of floor towers is much more, leading to far superior bass extension and efficiency and lower distortion than trying to do the same thing with a little speaker. For $399 delivered how can you go wrong?

Radiant Photo Software

I've been using software that was called Perfectly Clear for the past years to make most of my photos look better, faster.

Perfectly Clear isn't sold anymore, although of course my copy is still working great. You folks have been asking what to use now, and the answer is Radiant Photo.

Perfectly Clear's technology has been improved and is now sold by Radiant Imaging Labs, which works as well or better as did Perfectly Clear.

Today I use Radiant Photo rather than Perfectly Clear to make my pictures look better, faster. Heck, even the photos of the Nikon Z 40mm Special Edition below were processed in Radiant Photo, as are most of my photos from about a week ago on when I finally got Radiant Photo.

I use Radiant Photo as a plug-in to Photoshop CS6 (2012) on Mac OS High Sierra, and of course it works on the latest Mac and PC systems and can run as a stand-alone application, and of course in Lightroom as well.

If you don't have it, try it. Even better than installing a trial, you can drag your images to their website and it will process and show you how they look improved! Easy!

Not just for places and products, it also works wonders on faces, and it's all automatic. Try it and see.

It's so luxurious, silent, powerful and inexpensive to run, and was so hard to find back in the day, that I just couldn't bring myself to part with it when I've gotten newer cars— so it's been preserved and only driven about 620 miles a year for the past 6 years!

It's in Southern California. Let me know if you'd like it.

82mm filters, 33.0 oz/935g, 2.3'/0.7 meters close focus, 1:3.8 (0.26×) macro ratio.

The legendary EF 135mm f/2 L never saw this coming: f/1.8 and stabilized! Eat that, Sony slackers trying to sell us Chinese-made unstabilized 135/1.8 lenses. Not only does Nikon Z have nothing even remotely close to a 135/1.8, even their Chinese-made 105mm f/1.4 F-mount dinosaur isn't stabilized. Nikon discontinued both their AI-s 135mm f/2 and AF 135mm f/2D DC lenses years ago, and neither was ever stabilized. Yawn!

This new RF 135mm f/1.8 IS USM should ship in late January 2023, but only if you get it ordered today.

I'm so glad I upgraded to Canon back in 2012. All because Nikon was synonymous with professional photography from the 1960s through the early 2000s doesn't mean we owe them any allegiance today with almost everything from Nikon seemingly disposable and offshored to China.

Canon's been the number-one selling camera brand overall for decades, and the top choice of pros ever since the 35mm EOS system really took off in the 1990s — and every one of my EF lenses ever made since they came out in 1987 is 100% compatible with mirrorless on Canon's adapters. Nikon's FTZ only works properly with less than half of my Nikon lenses. Ha!

NEW: Fuji X-T5 (black) w/16-80mm $2,199. (also at Adorama.)

NEW: Fuji MHG X-T5 grip: $129.95.

Clearly there is too much going on today for just poor little old me to write reams about all of these new products, but the X-T5 is the latest in what I consider to be Fuji's best camera. By "best" I mean a Fuji camera I'd actually shoot, unlike the sad crippled cameras missing half their controls like the GFX-100.

The X-T5 is the latest since the X-T1, X-T2, X‑T3 and X‑T4 which are among Fuji's most usable, and therefore best, cameras. You can pay more from Fuji, but you get less with other models when Fuji rips out the 4-way rear controller or some of the dials just to be cute. These controls are not decorations left over from the 1970s; they're how we control cameras with one touch rather than several. Touch functions stink.

Getting the World's Highest-Resolution DSLR

Canon 5DS/R

Canon 5DS/R and EF 50mm f/1.2L.

I've loved my 50 Megapixel Canon 5DS/R ever since I got mine when it came out in 2015.

No DSLR has higher resolution for my style of nature and landscape photography, nor has any Canon or Nikon mirrorless camera ever exceeded, much less even matched, the 5DS/R's resolution.

I paid $3,900 for mine back in 2015, and today Canon is giving them away at $1,500 each, brand new.

Here's the catch for How to Get One: It's so popular that B&H gets them in and ships them right out to everyone who has them on order, without ever having enough to park on a shelf to show as "in stock," so simply you have to place your order and then be patient for it to arrive at B&H and be shipped out to you. Just like everything new and hot, it probably will never be shown as "in stock," while those of us in the know order, wait, and get them while everyone else thinks nothing ever shipped.

Dawn at South Tufa

Dawn at South Tufa, 20 October 2015, 7:29 A.M. Canon 5DS R, Canon 16-35mm L IS at 24mm, f/10 at 1/200 at Auto ISO 100, Perfectly Clear. bigger.

My frozen film is Hot!!!

Mike tells me that most of it has already sold. He has, as of dawn this morning, only eight 5-roll pro-packs of 35mm Velvia 50 left.

People new to the film renaissance may not realize that back when all we had was film for serious photography that I, like most of us, would shoot many rolls every day. We didn't load a roll and work it for a week; we had no iPhones and we shot it all on film. I'd come back from a few days out shooting with a dozen or more rolls in a Ziploc bag to drop off at the lab.

When I shot film, I shot a lot of film. You also need to shoot often to stay in practice; learning how your meter responds to different situations and the best filter packs to use for each kind of lighting takes a lot of trial-and-error since you can't see the results immediately. Film shooting is a fine art to do well.

No fears, I still shoot film, just nowhere near as much Velvia as I used to. Also note that I only unloaded a ton of Velvia, my favorite film which I overbought. I still have a freezer full of B&W film.

Velvia shows its magic when you look at the film directly on a light table, where you get more dynamic range, resolution and color gamut directly from the film surface than we can from digital displays. Likewise, Velvia is breathtaking when projected directly from our slides. When I would do slide shows from my medium-format Velvia projected directly from the live film that was in my camera, people left breathless.

Velvia was and still is difficult to scan. If you want digital files, I prefer the color rendition I get directly from today's digital cameras. Velvia is such a dynamic film (Velvia's DMAX is close to 4.0 log10, meaning nearly a real 10,000:1 display dynamic range) that it's very difficult to scan well on CCD scanners. It really begs for real photomultiplier tube (PMT) drum scanner to get the scans to be as vibrant and accurate as what we see looking directly at the living, breathing film itself.

In other words, to love Velvia as I always have, you want to project it, or look at it on your light table, or view it in something great like the LEICA 5x loupe system 37 350. Treat yourself to a LEICA 35mm slide projector with a LEICA projection lens (not a Kodak Ektragraphic or Carousel; those were always awful by comparison with crappy lenses) or a 2¼″projector (look for HASSELBLAD, Rollei or Kindermann), and a real projection screen (not a sheet or white wall) and enjoy film the way it was intended.

Avoid color print (C-41) film like Kodacolor or Fujicolor. Its color was always awful, even back when film was all we had. You have to shoot slide film to get great color on film. C-41 has always been an amateur film; everything shot for publication has always been shot on transparency film, starting with Kodachrome back in the 1930s. C41 was just much easier to turn into prints at the drugstore than printing from slides, which was and is always been difficult.

While I don't shoot much, if any, color film anymore, I love B&W film. If my final work is B&W, I prefer shooting on film for its greater highlight dynamic range and the fact that converting to B&W from a color digital file doesn't work well when you start invoking color filters in the color to B&W conversion process.

My favorite B&W film is Fuji Acros 100 II, which has better red sensitivity and reciprocity characteristics than TMax 100.

31 October 2022, HALLOWEEN

Rockwell's Doomsday Film Vault GONE!!

Back when film was on the way out around 2010 I did a lifetime buy of all the original Velvia and Velvia 50 I'd ever need, in 35mm, 120, 220, 4×5 and 4×5 QuickLoad so I'd always have all I need. Velvia was critical to getting my look as an artist and digital hadn't caught up. I bought all I'd ever need and immediately put it all into my deep freezer at 0ºF (-18º C), to be used as needed. I was not going to let supply issues hamper my art.

I bought enough to sustain myself pretty much forever at what was my current usage rate — back in 2010 when I still shot a lot of film because digital hadn't caught up.

Digital became pretty good around 2012 when everything went to 24 MP, and I haven't shot much film ever since — but hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of rolls and sheets of film were still in my deep freeze that I was never going to use.

I put the word out, and luckily my friend Mike Ahmadi who lives just outside of Yosemite National Park wanted almost all of it. He's going to shoot it all, except that I had at least 170 rolls of 35mm Velvia, and Mike doesn't need that much 35mm.

Mike is keeping all the larger format film for his own use, but if you twist his arm he might part with some of it. I had hundreds of rolls and sheets of 220 and 4×5" which aren't made anymore. 220 is critical for serious heavy shooting with my medium format cameras (hint: 220 vacuum backs for Contax 645 are cheap at eBay and they use a vacuum to keep film the flattest ever seen in any consumer application which you can't get in any other format other than 220, and A24 & E24 220 backs for Hasselblad are also really cheap at eBay), and of course 4×5" is critical for serious landscape photography. I saved enough for my own use for all these formats, but I had so, so much extra that I was never going to shoot.

Here's the good part: Mike has offered to handle selling off what neither of us need. I had no idea I had hoarded so much as I cleaned out three freezers! He's listed some of it at eBay for $99 a five-roll Pro Pack, and if you email Mike at [email protected], you can get them for $75 each pro-pack as Friends-of-Ken. That's far less than the usual $20 a roll people pay on eBay for film with questionable storage history. Of course B&H has all you want for $34 a roll, new ($170 per 5-roll pro pack).

Enjoy!

Just a small fraction of what I had:

Velvia 50 100 rolls

Fuji Velvia 50 in 5-roll Pro Packs (only 100 rolls shown here). bigger.

I usually bought Velvia in 20-roll pro packs. They were the best as you opened one carton and there were 20 easy-to-grab films in there, no little boxes in the way. These 5-roll packs are for smaller shooters; there are 5 cans in each box but you have to shake them out the end rather than reaching into a big box from the top with the 20-roll packs.

Here's how I bought 120 and 220 film: 100-roll pro packs:

Velvia 50 100 rolls

Fuji Velvia 50 in a 100-roll Pro Pack of 120 (I stuck some 220 in there to fill the box which was missing what I had already shot). bigger.

Not to worry, I still have everything I need, but no way was I going to shoot 170 rolls of 35mm Velvia. Yes, it keeps great in the deep freeze and Mike has already shot a bunch. Better get yours before Mike burns through it all! He has his own E6 line so developing is trivial for him at home, lucky devil.

Here's me with Mike at Yosemite's Ansel Adams Gallery. Mike is the spitting image of Ansel:

Sony A7R V

Sony A7R V and FE 35mm f/1.4 GM.

NEW: Sony A7R V Review.

Updated: All Sony Cameras Compared.

I added the A7R V.

In case you haven't seen All Sony Cameras Compared recently, you'll notice that it has actual prices plotted going back to 2016 so you can see how the deals come and go for each camera.

Sony is weird in that they keep selling their old-model cameras, like the A7 II that came out in 2015, even today! That's good for shooters because today the A7 II sells for only $898, down from $1,499 when it came out.

You also can see how the A7R IV sold for about $3,498 the past three years, and just dropped to $2,998 with the introduction of the A7R V, and since they're mostly the same camera, you can pocket 900 simoleons by opting for the A7R IV.

Is the A7R V worth $900 more than the A7R IV? It all depends on how much money you have and if you'd use or notice any of what's new in (or missing from) the A7R V. See Is It Worth It to find out.

In-Stock: Canon EOS R3.

In-Stock: Canon RF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM.

NEW: Olympus OM-5 w/12-45mm: $1,599.

$800 off: Nikon D850 & loads of free goodies: $2,496.95.

Why do people worry about Nikon potentially discontinuing the D850 when you can buy all you want, brand new, cheap? It was $3,297 back when I got mine in 2017! Yes, my reviews also plot the historical new and used prices of everything I review so you can make the best decisions about when it's on sale or not.

$200 off: Nikon Z7 II: $2,796.95.

$200 off: Nikon Z7 II w/24-70/4: $3,396.95.

In-Stock: Sony PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS: $648.

In-Stock: Fuji XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR: $1,199.

I thought these were sales when I put them up, but actually they're favorites. The great news is that few people realize the reason the prices of our beloved cameras haven't skyrocketed with inflation is that the value of the US dollar versus the Japanese yen has also skyrocketed to its highest level in over 30 years:

Favorite: Canon EOS R6: $2,499.

Favorite: Nikon Z9: $5,496.95.

Favorite: Fuji X100V (black): $1,399.

Favorite: Fuji X100V (silver): $1,399.

Favorite: Xbox Series X: $499.99.

LEICA M6

LEICA M6 TTL 0.85.

NEU: LEICA M6, Edition 2022.

Not to be outdone by digital, LEICA has reintroduced the M6, which came out back in 1986.

Sadly the new version doesn't come with the superior optional 0.85× viewfinder of my personal M6 — and you can get all you want used today at eBay (how to win at eBay).

The new version should be available at B&H shortly.

13 October 1999, Thursday

23rd Anniversary

KenRockwell.com went on the air on October 13th, 1999.

The US Navy was also founded 247 years ago today in 1775.

New: Sony ZV-1F Vlogging Camera (also at Adorama).

The ZV-1F is a small-sensored, fixed lens point & shoot.

It has no viewfinder.

It has a non-removable, non-zoom 7.6mm f/2 lens (20mm equivalent on full-frame) and a flip screen. It has a small 8.6 x 13.2mm 20 MP sensor. Sony calls it "one inch," but it's not.

While Sony calls it a "Vlogging" camera, you can't livestream from it directly. Instead, you have to connect it to your phone or computer to connect it to the Internet — so why not just livestream directly from your iPhone as I do and be on the air without all the hassle of monkeying around trying to set menus, charging more batteries and God knows what else to get it all connected to connect live?

Even a few years ago I had no problem livestreaming directly from my iPhone 11 Pro Max with no other power, connections or gear needed. Its own battery easily let me broadcast for over three continuous hours live from the field with my iPhone's own wireless connection.

Today, my iPhone 14 Pro Max (review coming) has about the same-sized 7.3 x 9.8mm sensor, a faster 6.7mm (24mm equivalent) f/1.8 lens and has 48 MP, not 20. Most importantly, Apple has a lot more smarts and processing power than Sony. Picture quality today is in the firmware and I honestly suspect that the video out of my iPhone is going to look much better in real life than from this Sony. Of course for selfie vlogging one uses the smaller iPhone "front" camera, but you get the idea.

I never need a gimbal while walking and rolling video with my iPhones; their stabilization is amazing (Hint: while rolling the image on your screen will bounce around, but look at the playback and you'll be amazed at how you just don't need a gimbal to hand-hold tracking shots on iPhone.)

The ZV-1F claims a stabilizer mode, but I can't say how well it works.

I'm sure the ZV-1F will be popular with people who take Vlogging more seriously than I (which is pretty much everyone over the age of six), but honestly, I prefer the real-time, real-world convenience of my all-in-one iPhone — no gimbal, no powerbank and no external gear needed for direct live streaming. Think I'm kidding? Go to the YouTube app in iPhone, tap in the the bottom-center and tap GO LIVE. Easy.

Canon 16-35mm IS

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS USM.

Updated: Canon EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS USM Review.

I added another sample image and updated the prices.

I just got my RF 15-30mm IS STM in for review and will be shooting it all over Yosemite next week — watch this space. The great news is that the RF 15-30mm IS STM is super sharp, as expected. When a lens doesn't have to be as fast, it's much, much easier to make it small, light and inexpensive as well as ultra sharp.

beyerdynamic DT 1770 PRO.

New: beyerdynamic DT 1770 PRO Review.

08 October 2022, Saturday

Review Coming: Apple Watch ULTRA.

I'm loving my Apple Watch ULTRA. It turns out its biggest strength - for me - is that its huge battery lets me do many-hour-long workouts each day without having to charge. I workout at least a half hour every day, which is the daily workout duration for which Apple rates the regular Watch's 18-hour battery life, however every other day I workout for a few hours, during which the bright green rear LED heart rate sensor drains the battery with hours and hours of use.

Just for giggles I was able to let workouts run for about 12 hours the other day, and my Apple Watch ULTRA just barely covered it all, with continuous heart rate data the whole time. My regular Series Watches could never run workouts that long.

With conventional Series watches I would have to use a low-power workout option to have the heart rate sensor measure much less frequently to let me run for that many hours.

My ULTRA now typically has 65% charge left at the end of each day, even with a couple of hours of workouts.

I always have my phone with me; if you leave it home and the watch has to use its cellular connection, that also runs the battery down much more quickly. My older Series watches lost about 10% of charge per hour if working on cellular without a phone near; I haven't checked that with my ULTRA yet.

Even if you don't need the battery life, the big, beautiful Apple Watch ULTRA is titanium and therefore with its trail loop band, weighs less (2.475 oz./70.2g total) than my stainless-steel series watches with their stainless-steel Milanese-loop bands (45mm Series 7: 3.275 oz./ 92.9g total). Unlike my other heavy dive watches, the Apple Watch ULTRA feels weightless, and with its big black screen, is a work of art.

I was concerned that the ULTRA would be a huge thing on my wrist for daily use as are my dive watches, but it turns out the ULTRA just disappears. It's super light weight and not as big as you think, at least compared to a dedicated stainless or brass dive watch.

While the actual active image area of the ULTRA screen is only about the same size as the 45mm Series 7 and 8 screens, the ULTRA has more black area around the screen, so the image floats in beautiful inky blackness rather than being wrapped around the margins of the Series 7 and 8.

All of the 45mm Series 7, 45mm Series 8 or ULTRA have a much bigger screen than any of the Series 6 or earlier watches. I want the biggest screen I can get, so any of the 45mm watches or ULTRA are a huge step up from the earlier ones.

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
