$100 Off: Canon RF 14-35mm f/4 L IS USM: $1,399.

The RF 14-35mm is my favorite mirrorless ultrawide for its unbeaten zoom range and overall excellence. My other favorite is the RF 15-30mm IS STM for its tiny size and price and huge performance.

$100 Off: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM: $1,999.

This is a huge lens with flawless performance; a staple of professional photography for many years.

$80 Off: Canon Rebel T7 & 18-55mm: $399.

Tiny price on a tiny camera with pretty crappy performance by modern standards. It makes a great institutional camera, or a camera to let people see how bad DSLRs were 15 years ago with inconsistent autofocus.

I'm not complaining; we all cheerfully paid three times as much for this performance ten years ago and the pictures look great - so long as you ignore the few that come out out-of-focus.

27 February 2023, Monday

$300 Off: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM: $2,099.

I use mine with an EF to RF adapter on mirrorless and prefer it to the RF 100-500mm.

This is a deal for $2,099 at Crutchfield. It's $2,199 at Adorama, at Amazon and at B&H. This really is a deal; it's been selling at $2,399 ever since October 2020.

The EF 100-400 L II is my favorite telephoto of all time. Compared to the RF lenses like the RF 100-500mm it's heavier because it's all durable metal and it has exotic fluorite optics. I love mine for its insane sharpness, genuinely pro-level construction and great performance even with stacked EF and EF-II extenders.

$200 Off: Canon EOS R6 & RF 24-105mm IS STM: $2,399.

This is a superb combo; you can see a sample R6 snap below and the RF 24-105mm STM is weightless and has among the best stabilization I've ever used — I routinely get sharp shots with two-second hand-held exposures!

$200 Off: Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM: $1,399.

$300 Off: Nikon Z5 & Z 24-200mm: $1,896.95.

$200 Off: Nikon Z50, 16-50mm VR & 50-250mm VR: $1,146.95.

I'd stretch for the Z5 deal above. I love having it all in one 24-200mm lens rather than having to swap between the 16-50 and 50-250mm lenses.

New at Crutchfield: Sony FE 20-70mm f/4G Full-Frame.

$130 Off: Sony 256GB CFexpress Type B TOUGH Card: $299.99.

$300 Off: TWO SanDisk 2 TB Portable SSDs: $239.98! I have just one of these pocket drives and love it for carrying backups and about my past ten years of work everywhere I go.

$202 Off: Lumix DMC-ZS100 & 64GB Extreme card: $397.99.

$150 Off: Seagate 12TB Expansion Desktop HDD: $189.99. (I use the 8 TB version of these for backups. Add to cart for price.)

$1,400 Off: ASUS 16" ProArt StudioBook 3,840 × 2,400 pixel OLED Laptop: $1,999. Ends midnight NYC time (9 PM west-coast time

NEW: How to Learn Photography.

Wow, a new article about photography rather than more gear.

I'm working on my images from October, which is why you haven't seen much new work recently: it's coming.

500 Errors

My apologies if you get ERROR 500 - Try Again warnings. If you do, just hit REFRESH or RELOAD a few times and it will come in.

I've had a heck of a time trying to make these errors go away. I'm not a web developer and my hosting company is mostly pointing fingers rather than fixing it. I'm an artist, not a coder, and also nursing a broken arm this past month has made it hard to tackle all this with just one hand.

Thanks for your patience.

Dave Wyman and I are contemplating another Route 66 photo trip this April. Watch this space.

Here are snaps from our 2016 trip.

Astro Tip

This is a motorized astronomical clock-drive tripod head system that tracks stars so you can make very long exposures and keep the stars sharp.

Dedicated astro guys love these because they can expose as long as they want for deep, clean imges at low ISOs, while regular folks like me have to shoot mostly with ultrawide lenses and high ISOs to keep exposures shorter than 30 seconds for sharp astro shots.

Others make numerous 30-second exposures and put them together with special software that rotates them to compensate for some of the sky's (or earth's depending on your point of view) rotation, while a well aligned clock-drive lets you make hours-long exposures and keep it all sharp, mostly dependant on how well you align it.

New at Crutchfield: Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 full frame.

New at Crutchfield: Nikon Z 26mm f/2.8 full frame.

Teased: Sigma APS-C 16mm f/1.4 (24mm eq.) for Nikon Z.

Teased: Sigma APS-C 30mm f/1.4 (45mm eq.) for Nikon Z.

Teased: Sigma APS-C 56 mm f/1.4 (85mm eq.) for Nikon Z.

These are newly in Nikon Z mount. THey've been avaialble in Sony, Fuji, LEICA L, micro 4/3 and Canon EF-M (not the newest EOS-R) mounts.

NEW: RØDE NT1 5th Generation Studio Mic in silver and in black. (also at Adorama in silver and in black)

The NT1 is a popular 1' large-diaphragm cardioid condenser studio mic for just about everything. This new fifth generation adds digital USB-C to the phantom-powered analog XLR connector.

Honest, this plugs into the usual pro analog preamps and outboard analog interfaces with the usual XLR cables, or look carefully and there is a USB-C connector in there across from pin 2, between pins one and three! Just connect it via USB and use its own internal 192 ksps 32-bit floating point ADC (their words, not mine).

It has internal DSP for doing filtering, EQ, dynamic compression, noise reduction (I'll assume that means noise gating or downward expansion) and even APHEX processing. You set these via an app.

It claims only 4 dBA of self noise, which is the lowest I recall ever reading. Other great mics are more in the 14-20 dBA self noise range.

Not bad for $249, including the shock mount.

Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM

NEW: Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM.

This is a newer, better lens than the old Zeiss Sony 50/1.4, which costs more due to older technology.

This new Sony lens takes 67mm filters, weighs 18.2 oz. (516g), has an 11 blade diaphragm, has a 1.3'/0.41m close focus, a 0.16× macro ratio and sells for $1,298.

The old Zeiss lens took 72mm filters, weighed a whopping 27.5 oz./778g, had a 1.5'/0.45m close-focus and sells today for $1,498. Sony will keep selling the Zeiss lens because the Zeiss brand earned such status back when they made lenses for CONTAX and HASSELBLAD that some people will still pay a premium just for the name, even if the old lens is bigger, heaver and has inferior optics.

The optics of either of these are extraordinary so there's no need to replace your Zeiss 50/1.4 unless you want to save a load of weight, but buying new today definitely get this new 50/1.4 GM.

Updated: All Sony Cameras Compared.

I updated new and used pricing. This is important; not many people realize that my reviews and this comparison log and chronicle the new and used prices over time so we can see how Sony manipulates the new prices, and how market demand for cameras like the ZV-E10 can spike and make the used price double the new price last year. The ZV-E10 prices are back to normal today, and these pages record this for our eternal reference. Good job, Rockwell.

Camera Prices

As I've written before, we are very lucky that while the prices of everything from eggs to cars to natural gas continue to skyrocket beyond many people's means, camera prices have if anything dropped over time.

Some of this is due to technological advances that let manufacturers continue to make better cameras more easily, and another major effect few Americans realize is that the yen/dollar exchange rate has changed by as much as 50% in our favor over the past two years.

If you and I were paying in yen we would have seen prices rise, but since I'm paying in American dollars the exchange rate, currently 134 yen per dollar and as high as 152 yen per dollar last year, is scoring me bargains compared to the past ten or 20 years where it averaged around 110 yen per dollar.

We never know what the future holds, so now is as good as it gets for buying any photo gear. When the dollar starts to fall against the yen, camera prices will go up. The dollar has been steadily falling against the yen since its peak in October at 152 (the highest it's been in 33 years), so don't come whining to me if camera prices jump 10% or 20% or more this summer.

Updated: Fuji Cameras Compared.

For the first time ever I've documented that used prices for Fuji cameras have gone up about 50% in the past three years. I've never seen prices for used digital cameras appreciate. This is due to Fuji not being able to supply enough new cameras, and since their old models are mostly the same as the new ones, people are paying more digging into used when they can't get new.

For instance, personally I prefer my X100F over the newer X100V. Fuji removed the critical multiway rear controls from the X100V (note the blank space on the right side), so why would I want one if my X100F has the controls I need and the new model doesn't? The "touch function" screen swipes of the X100V are rubbish!

Duh!

So much better than any sound bar! Sound bars only work their magic if you're sitting exactly and directly in front of them. At best only one person gets to hear the 3D or stereo effect, and in most practical home layouts everyone pretty much only hears broad mono. Do yourself the favor and use discrete speakers. Don't worry about Atmos vs. 7.1 vs. 5.1; they work the same in practice - and any of them are far more spacious than any sound bar in practical use.

No, I've never heard this Klipsch set, but for $269 with six speakers including a powered subwoofer, you can't go wrong on a budget.

Hint: I always set my front left and front right speakers very far apart, often far away from the screen. I love a huge, immersive soundfield, and leaving the left and right speakers at the sides of your screen - even with the 85" screens I use - leads to a small soundfield

21 January 2023, Saturday

In stock: Canon EOS R6 Mark II. (review)

Limited stock. If it's sold out, order it and be patient and it will ship as soon as it arrives.

Not Quite Yet: Olympus 90mm f3.5 IS Macro.

It adds stabilization and twice-life-size magnification to fill the frame with something as tiny as 6 × 9mm (0.24 × 0.36")!

Because it's for the tiny micro 4/3 system with a 2x crop factor, it works like a 180mm equivalent macro - much better than using a 105mm macro on full-frame from the standpoint of perspective rendition.

You can't order it and there are no other specifications available — yet.

It's Back! Nikon D3500.

Nikon D3500

Nikon D3500 and included 18-55mm VR DX AF-P.

B&H still has new stock on what was the world's best buy for a high-performance ultralight DSLR. Get yours while you still can.

Canon 1DX Mk II

Canon EOS 1DX Mk II with 50mm f/1.2 L.

$2,000 Off: Canon EOS 1DX Mark II: $3,999.

The EOS 1DX Mk II was the world's top pro camera until replaced by today's 1DX Mark III, which adds magic thumb controls and other little goodies.

The 1DX Mk II is still a superb camera, and B&H now has them brand-new at a closeout price.

In stock: HASSELBLAD X2D.

100 MP 33 × 44mm sensor.

World's First: Sony Full-Frame FE 20-70mm f/4 G!

Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G

Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G.

Full-Frame, 72mm filters, 17.1 oz./488g, 0.8'/0.25m close focus, 0.39× macro ratio.

Holy cow, Sony has just done something that none of the world's traditional optical giants at Zeiss, LEICA, Nikon or Canon have ever been able to design: a full-frame zoom that starts at an ultrawide 20mm and zooms all the way to 70mm, and at a constant f/4 to boot!

This compact lens is a HUGE step forward. It is immensely more difficult to make a lens each millimeter wider. It's also extremely difficult to do it in a zoom, much less at a large aperture.

Up until today no lens that could get to 70mm could go wider than 24mm.

This 20-70mm is amazing for much more than laying another milestone in optical history: for many people it now lets us take just this one lens instead of hauling an ultrawide zoom along with our 24-70mm.

This is one of those cases where a manufacturer doesn't realize what an optical engineering milestone this is, and for a change I'm having to tout it more than the manufacturer. In most cases marketers make up things to get us to want to buy the new model of the same old thing, and in this case this is something no other maker has ever been able to do in the entire history of optics.

It's not a matter of marketing never having thought of such a revolutionary ultrawide to short tele zoom; it's the simple fact that no optical designer has ever been able to create any full-frame lens that could go this wide, be this fast and sharp and zoom that long at a reasonable size (takes 72mm filters and is 3.9"/99mm long), weight (just 17.1 oz./488g) and price ($1,098). Sony has broken a new technical barrier — oh, and it also focuses super close!!

Bravissimo Sony!!!

You can order it at B&H and at Adorama. As always, order now (OK, orders actually start on Wednesday) and be patient if you want to get yours first. It should ship in March, so long as you get yours on order pronto.

Not Yet: Sony also mentioned today that they're working on a 300mm f/2.8. Duh; every camera brand has done this decades ago. Nikon invented the world's first 300mm f/2.8 back in the 1970s and the 300/2.8 has been a staple for every pro sports and portrait shooter ever since. The fact that Sony is drawing attention to the fact that they don't yet have this is curious, but since they just pushed the world of optics ahead today, no big deal. A "development announcement: like this is simply done to try to keep shooters from swapping brands to one that actually has a 300/2.8, like Nikon, Canon and even Minolta had them back in the 1980s. PS: You can use an adapter to use the Minolta MAXXUM or Sony Alpha mount DSLR 300/2.8s on Sony mirrorless.

Starting at a lower price of just $599 and offering the option of the new M2 Pro chips.

Canon Rebel T7

Canon EOS Rebel T7 and included EF-s 18-55mm IS II.

NEW: Canon EOS Rebel T7 Review.

Another low-price, low-performance DSLR. The T8i and R10 are worlds better — but more expensive

12 January 2023, Thursday

NEW: Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 for Sony. (also at Adorama.)

NEW: Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 for L Mount. (also at Adorama.)

I have a review from 2018 of the 60-600mm in SLR mounts.

11 January 2023, Wednesday

Canon SL3

Canon EOS Rebel SL3 and EF-S 18-55mm IS II (which I just happened to have handy; the kit version comes with the newest 18-55mm IS STM).

NEW: Canon EOS Rebel SL3 Review.

It's also called the Kiss X10 in Japan and EOS 250D in the rest of the world.

The SL3 has first-class image processing so its colors, lens corrections and high ISO performance are wonderful, but it's crippled by an inconsistent autofocus system that doesn't always get the picture in focus.

09 January 2023, Monday

NEW: Bosma G1 Pro Micro 4/3 8K Camera: $3,499.

06 January 2023, Friday

New from Nikon

Well, not really.

Nikon doesn't make these and you can't buy them and there are no specifications or prices other than what you see below. Nikon threw out the names and two images and that's it. Nikon needed something so they didn't look empty handed at CES, and this is their best shot.

If you want either of these, get them first by getting B&H to notify you at the links below and then ordering the instant you can, and be patient.

New: Nikon Z 26mm f/2.8.

This is a tiny full-frame wide "pancake" lens.

New: Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2.

This is a big, heavy, expensive fast short tele. It's Nikon's first 85mm f/1.2; Canon has been making superb aspheric 85mm f/1.2L lenses since 1976, and today has two in production: the RF 85mm f/1.2L and RF 85mm f/1.2L DS.

Only time will tell if Nikon's lens focuses fast enough for normal use, or if it's slow and ultra precise, more optimized for science and astronomy rather than fashion and portrait use.

Help me help you

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

If you find this as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. eBay is always a gamble, but all the other places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

Thanks for reading!
